Chapter 47 - What if Shaw

Mom was trying to argue but I felt like Shaw going to shoot her so I stepped forward. I promised to go only if they promised to let everyone live. If they hurt anyone the deal is off. If they try anything stupid the deal is off. Mom asked if she could come with me. Shaw said that I will be poked and prodded in a way that would make her queasy. She didn't care as long she didn't lose me. I stepped forward and they cuffed me. One pulled out a collar. They explained that it will electrocute me if I tried anything. I told them it was a bad idea. I don't consent to wearing it. They put it on anyway and pressed a button. I felt pain course through my body. I didn't know how I was on the floor. I heard my Mom scream and Shaw put the device away. He explained that I should expect pain if I don't cooperate. I asked him to use it again. Shaw stared at me weirdly. His friend snatched the tiny device and he didn't hesitate.

The first few seconds was unbearable. But I focused it I got used to sensation and got up. They were shocked through and through. He asked me how. I calmly explained how I had spend my childhood in pain. This is just another reminder. He stared in fear as he realised that it won't work all the time. Mom and I were shoved forward. I looked back to see the others watched as we got in a truck. There was a metal cage on the far end. I was taking a moment but apparently that wasn't allowed. I was zapped. I held on to a chair till anger got the best of me. Then I ripped out the collar and snapped it in two. I turned to see a soldier was shaking from head to toe. I asked him if he can speak. He apologized as he asked me to get in the cage. Mom sat next to Shaw by the controls with tears down her face. I just stared blankly as they took off. Shaw told me that I made the right choice. I told him to go fly a kite. Mom started to hiccup. Shaw gave her a water bottle and sha took slow sips. The engine whined like a kid before the thing started. They had to get confirmation before the driver left the prison.

We took off and I told them to turn the other way. They didn't believe me till the street gave out. After we fell I explained that there was a treasure hunter who had blown a septic tank thinking it was buried treasure. The soldiers didn't believe me till mom confirmed that she was the officer in charge of that specific investigation. Shaw explained how mom was a cop. One of them had enough and he opened the door. Zombies barged in and I told mom to get in here since the zombies can't stand being near me. Mom tried to go but one of Shaw's buddies grabbed her and told her to stand behind them. She needs to be with her own species. I explained that I became this because it was a cure for my illness. He had no right to disrespect me. He wanted to argue but once that zombie was killed a few others flooded in. Mom gave him the slip and came in. I shut the door behind her. We watched as they just kept coming. Finally Shaw had enough and ordered his men to go out the back. They left us and I told them the deal was off. I go my way and they go theirs. As they closed the door they saw how these things left me alone. There was a clear five foot distance between us.

But they had no choice but to leave us alone. I kept saying over and over and Shaw just accepted that I am not going with them. I waited till the door was closed and they were clearly gone before telling mom how I escaped with five girls. She was terrified but she saw how they avoided me. So she promised to stay behind me at all times. I opened the door and spread my arms wide. She walked behind me trying to be as small as possible. We managed to get out and Shaw the others were walking up the ladder. There was one who was bleeding mixed with something decaying. I can smell his transformation. But I paid no attention. I made it clear. Our path goes their separate ways. Shaw saw everyone was giving mom and me a wide berth and he explained his change of heart. He wants me to cooperate and come along. Or he will hunt me to end of the earth. I laughed carelessly as I picked mom up and called out, "Go ahead" he stared in confusion till I levitated a foot into the air and became invisible. He let out a shout of frustration. The others urged him to hurry up and get to the surface. Shae got out and looked all over but didn't find me

He and his buddies couldn't use their guns since they had to climb the ladder. Dexterity was a requirement or they will fall and become dinner. Once on top they closed the manhole cover but still zombies in sewers found a way to come up. So he had no choice but to bolt. I carried mom like I was superman and she was Lois lane. I bobbed up and down like apples in a barrel before flying away. I saw Batou and put mom down. The two talked and I told them I will find way out. When I do they better run for it. If he sees her he won't hesitate to shoot she tried to argue but I became invisible and flew away. When I came back I sat on my knees with both hands up. Batou was more open minded than mom. He calmly explained that he trusts me since I brought mom safely. I used to say when I was little. I would care for mom when I was stronger. Mom cried a little but held herself together. I told them about a train that is arriving in a few minutes. We started walking but I made we held hands. For some reason the zombies left them alone as long they were holding my hands. We walked an hour and I found my friends. We hugged and they were grateful that I escaped Shaw. I told them about the train.

We got to the train station and waited as it came to collect us. I heard the conductor say we need to give them a few things so I made myself invisible and got whatever I found useful. A first aid kit, a few dozen cans and a walkie talkie. The conductor checked our temperature and I gave them the haul. He stared at it for a second and gave us the go ahead to board. We were placed in the community section. There was a lot of people here and that meant we could blend in easy. As luck would have it the train made a stop and a few soldiers came in to inspect the train. They stared at us for a second before moving on. After they left the train resumed it's journey. I felt a lot safer after we crossed a bridge and it was detonated. I looked outside and felt a sense of freedom. The others were feeling unsure. I promised them that the worst was behind us and we were going for a new future where there will be no zombies. Only family. This made them all smile. The train went on for another six days and it came to a halt. We were told to disembark if we wanted to be farmers. My friends and I jumped off and so did mom and Batou. An elderly man in a farmer's outfit greeted us. "Welcome to Greendale"
