Chapter 292 - CA [292]: Ward

Ward 4, once one of Tokyo's most chaotic districts, was a nightmare for humans. In the city's twenty-four wards, 1 through 4 were the worst, teeming with ghouls to the point that basic survival was a struggle. The area harbored countless ghoul organizations, from major factions to small gangs to lone ghouls scraping by, scavenging leftovers from stronger peers. It was prime territory for turf wars, with Aogiri Tree clashing against rivals.

Today, Aogiri planned to purge Ward 4 entirely, join them or die.

Two unmarked vans, headlights off, rolled into the ward. They parked on a quiet street, engines and lights cut, blending in as ordinary vehicles. But inside their cargo holds, twenty armed ghouls waited, decked in bulletproof vests, helmets, goggles, night-vision gear, and masks, protection dialed to the max. Their arsenals were loaded: grenades and ammo clips on their belts, AKs in hand, pistols strapped to thighs.

"Ready?" Altair, in casual clothes, leaned against the cargo wall, arms crossed, eyeing the ten ghouls in his van.

"Ready!" They barked in unison.

"This is your first fight after weeks of training." Altair said. "Make it clean, or I'll double your drills back at base. Got it?"

"Got it!" They nodded vigorously. Double training? They'd rather die.

Altair had drilled them mercilessly for a week, treating them like machines. Twenty-two ghouls endured his brutal regimen, ghouls could heal with flesh, so he pushed them to their limits. Where did the meat come from? He'd told Eto to secure a crematorium, ensuring an endless supply. After a week of hell, they'd mastered firearms and teamwork.

"Good. Tonight's mission: wipe out all rival ghoul factions in Ward 4. Clear?"

"Clear!"

"Go!" The ten ghouls shoved open the van's doors, leaping out and crouching into the shadows. The second van's team did the same, led by their "brother," Koutarou Amon.

Amon marveled at his strange path, from hating ghouls to arming them, betraying their plans to spark infighting, and now leading a squad. It was surreal, but his orders came from Altair.

With all twenty ghouls deployed, the van doors shut. Altair powered up a laptop inside, launching a drone perched on the roof for real-time command. "Two o'clock, 200 meters north, four ghouls, unknown faction. Take them out."

"Yes, sir!" The squad leader, Ayato Kirishima, responded. Chosen for his ukaku's mobility, Altair had molded him into a field commander and long-range fighter. Why brawl when suppressant rounds could end a ghoul from afar? Ayato was now a devoted sniper.

"First team, handle those four." Ayato ordered. His four-man unit melted into the dark, using night-vision to close in. Each approached from a different angle, silently drawing knives. In sync, they slit the ghouls' throats.

The targets thrashed, but their strength faded fast, kagune unusable. They collapsed, bleeding out. "Regroup." The team lead whispered, and they vanished, leaving four corpses.

"Four o'clock, ten ghouls." Altair's voice crackled through their comms.

Ayato issued new orders. "Second and third teams, frontal assault. First team, flank with me."

"Update: thirty-six more ghouls behind those ten, likely their main force." Altair added.

Ayato halted. "Forty-six total? Time for a full strike." He adjusted. "Second, third, fourth teams, frontal assault. First team, flank. Fifth team, with me for aerial."

The twenty ghouls moved, twelve creeping forward for the front, four flanking, and the fifth team, all ukaku users, including Ayato, preparing to strike from above. They encircled the forty-six ghouls but held, awaiting Ayato's signal.

Once everyone was in position, Ayato whispered, "Go!"

At his command, the frontal teams attacked. A grenade arced into the enemy group, exploding amid their stunned gazes. "Fire!" The twelve ghouls unleashed a torrent of bullets, igniting the battle to purge Ward 4.
