The aftereffects of Thunder and Overheat finally faded. The sky cleared for a moment but just for a moment.
Then both legendary birds launched at each other with extraordinary speed that to ordinary eyes, they appeared a blur.
Their wings glowed bright white. They collided with a sound like two mountains crashing together. A massive shockwave exploded outward.
Wind screamed across the summit strong enough to knock soldiers off their feet even far below. The air itself seemed to ripple from the force.
Gladion watched from his safe ridge on Elder Green. He felt the power, but he was not as shocked as everyone else. His Mega Collosus had fought at this level for a short time. The difference was only that legendaries could keep it up for much longer.
Collosus had managed to ensure Moltres Flames and had managed to keep her at bay. It might have looked like Tyrnaitar even with Mega evolution did not put up much of a fight against Moltres but he was the reason that kept Moltres at her toes or else she would have just slammed flamethrower and burned everyone else on the battlefield.
The reporters had moved their Pidgeot farther away, but their cameras still zoomed as close as possible.
"Folks you are not going to believe it, another legendary bird has joined the fight," one reporter shouted. "It is Zapdos! The electric bird of Kanto has appeared!"
"What is going to happen now?" another asked. "Can Gym Leader Gladion survive against two legendary birds at once? He is barely holding against one by the look of things. Will Champion Lance and Elite four appear to help Gym Leader Gladion because it sure looks like he needs it?"
Then the clash happened between Zapdos and Moltres.
"Wait! Zapdos is attacking Moltres! It came to help us! Zapdos is fighting to stop Moltres's rampage!"
Cheers exploded across Indigo. People cried with joy.
"It is rare to see even a legendary Pokemon but we are witnessing two legendaries and not it that we are also witnessing why they are called legendaries, not just because of their rarity but also because of their superior strength." The reporter said
The battle continued in the sky. Moltres breathed fire. Zapdos answered with lightning. They flew circles around each other, trading blows.
But it quickly became clear that Gladion's fight had tired Moltres badly. She moved slower. Her flames were weaker. Zapdos pushed her back step by step.
Finally Zapdos hovered in place and let out a sharp cry. Moltres stopped attacking. She floated with wings drooping. Zapdos seemed to say something to her. After a long moment, Moltres nodded slowly.
Zapdos turned and looked straight at Gladion. She waved one wing, calling him over.
Gladion flew closer on Elder Green. Ultron stayed ready beside him with a psychic shield.
Zapdos spoke [She is ready to talk.]
Gladion bowed his head. "Thank you."
[She says if she does not like your words, nothing will stop her from burning everything. And she is ready to fight me to death.] Zapdos warned.
Gladion nodded and faced Moltres.
Before he could speak, Moltres screeched with pure anger. [ Gladion stayed calm. His own anger burned inside, but he kept it locked away.
He was also angry from fighting this battle. He was angry on Moltres for injuring his Pokemon and espressially crippling Tengen but he also knew that anger would not solve this situation and would only escalate things. He had to be calm to stop this farce and direct Moltres anger to the correct source.
"Your anger is right. But it is aimed at the wrong people. Only one group of humans stole the eggs. They wanted you to destroy cities. They used you. Do you want to give them exactly what they planned?"
Moltres hissed. Flames leaked from her beak. [Then what should I do? Sit and wait while they keep my child?]
Zapdos spoke before Gladion could answer. [Is it the same group that tried to cage my baby years ago?]
Gladion nodded. "Yes."
Moltres turned to Zapdos. [They tried to take your child too? Then why stop me? Let me burn them all for both of us!]
Zapdos's voice stayed steady. [They tried. This human saved us. I owed him a favour. That is why I am here, to calm you.]
She looked at Gladion. [This group has gone too far. Something must be done. You better have a good answer, human.]
Gladion took a deep breath. "You are not the only one who wants them destroyed. I promise you, if your egg is alive ..."
Moltres interrupted him [It is alive, I can feel my child but I just don't know where it is.]
Gladion nodded and continued, "Then I will bring it back safe. And the people who did this will pay with everything they have."
Moltres narrowed her eyes. "How do I know you will keep your word?"
Two powerful pulses of aura came from the special Poké Balls on Gladion's necklace.
A strong, clear voice echoed in the minds of both legendary birds.
'We are the guarantee.'
For one second, Moltres and Zapdos went perfectly still. Their eyes widened. They felt power equal to their own coming from those two balls.
Respect filled their gazes. A human who commanded two legendaries, who had fought Moltres without using them, and still pushed her back earned their attention.
Moltres spoke first. [Seven days, human. Bring my child to my nest at the very peak in seven days. I will wait.]
She turned and flew away, flames trailing behind her.
Zapdos watched her go, then looked at Gladion. [I will leave too. But someone wanted to meet you.]
