Erza inspected the rainbow-colored Evolution stone as she turned the stone over in her hands, her Charizard looming behind her, its eyes fixed on the shimmering object.
Charizard muttered something to her.
"Huh, so you cool feel some connection to it? And your instincts tell you it's something important." Erza asked curiously as Charizard nodded.
"So you're saying this tiny stone can make Charizard evolve into a form stronger than its final evolution?" Erza asked, her voice a mix of skepticism and excitement as she held the stone up to the light.
Gladion nodded, leaning back against the wall. "Yeah, it's called Mega Evolution. It's a temporary transformation in battle, boosting a Pokémon's power way beyond normal. But it needs a strong bond between trainer and Pokémon, plus a Mega Stone and a Key Stone."
'Mom id hooked already. It's good that her anger had decreased. She would definitely ground me for hiding legendary Pokemon from her no matter how good of a reason I had,' he thought
Ben's brow furrowed, his curiosity piqued. "What's a Key Stone? And a Mega Stone? How do they work?"
He crossed his armsintrigued. Gladion rubbed his neck, explaining, "The Key Stone's for the trainer—it's like a catalyst, triggering the Mega Evolution. Trainers can embed it in stuff like rings, bracelets, or necklaces. The Mega Stone's what the Pokémon holds, and each species that can Mega Evolve has its own unique one."
'Dad's gonna dig into this like it's a research project,' Gladion thought, his smirk softening. 'He's such a nerd.'
Erza's eyes narrowed "So this stone's for Charizard specifically?" Gladion nodded, pointing at it. "That's Charizardite X. There's another one, Charizardite Y, for a different Mega form."
Ben's jaw dropped slightly, his mind racing. "Wait," he said, his voice tinged with awe. "My father—your grandpa, Maren—used to tell me stories from the Infinite Pokémon War. He said some Kalos trainers could evolve their Pokémon past their final forms. They were menaces on the battlefield, high-priority targets. We thought it was a myth!"
'Grandpa's war stories?' Gladion thought, his aura perking up. 'Didn't know they tied to this.'
Ben paced, his hands gesturing. "They said these evolutions were rare Pokémon from Kalos, maybe mutations. Dad mentioned a Blastoise with a giant cannon on its back—everyone assumed it was some freak mutation. But you're saying it was a Mega Evolution?" Gladion nodded, his smirk sly. "Yup. Mega Blastoise. Not a mutation, just a temporary boost."
Erza's Charizard snorted, its tail flame flaring, as if insulted by the idea of a Blastoise outshining it.
"He also mentioned about a black coloured Charizard that could use dragon moves like it was it's second nature." Ben said
"That's right. According to my research with this stone, if Charizard evolves, he would get the dragon typing temporarily." Gladion said which made Charizard eyes big and he looked at the stone as if wanting to eat it.
Erza handed the stone back to Gladion, her eyes sharp. "How many of these stones and Key Stones do you have? And for what Pokémon?" Gladion hesitated.
'Here's where it gets tricky.'
"I've got stones for Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur, Steelix, Tyranitar, Beedrill, Pidgeot, Alakazam, Slowbro, Gengar, Kangaskhan, Pinsir, Gyarados, Scizor, Heracross, Sceptile, Blaziken, Swampert, Gardevoir, Sableye, Aggron, Altaria, Medicham, Salamence, Metagross, and a few others I can't recall offhand," he said, counting on his fingers.
"As for how many, I've probably got sixty to seventy percent of all Mega Stones and Key Stones that can be found in Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn."
Erza and Ben exchanged a look of realization. Milo and Lila, oblivious, took the stone from Gladion, rolling it between them like a shiny toy.
'They've got no clue what this means,' Ben thought, his heart sinking. 'Glady's painting a massive target on his back. And he had just been targeted. Now people from other regions might also start targeting him. I can rest a little easy with 'Gladion's big brother and big sister' having his back.'
Erza's voice was low, almost a growl. "That's a lot of power, Gladion. You're already under fire from those corrupt League officials and Team Rocket. This… this makes you a bigger threat to them."
Ben rubbed his chin, his voice softer. "How'd you even find all these?"
Gladion shrugged, rubbing his head, a rare flush of embarrassment crossing his face. "After I learned what these stones were, I scoured Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn—any place I thought they might be. Old ruins, caves, black markets, you name it."
"I scored desserts, ice tundras, forests, mountains and even underground caves. I used my psychic powers, Ultron and Sabrina and her psychic Pokemon also helped me. We used our senses to find the stones and
"Does Sabrina know about the purpose of the stone?"
"Not yet, I have told her that I am researching more about the stones which I was truly doing since I needed to figure out which stone was for which Pokemon. The energy emitting out of each stone was matched with each Pokemon." Gladion said
"Hoenn's got the most stones, from what I found. I think they formed at the end of the Infinite Pokémon War. If they had them before, they would have found them and used it in the war."
Erza's brow rose. "Formed? How?"
Gladion leaned forward, his voice serious. "The records say Groudon and Kyogre went wild during the war, tearing up Hoenn's terrain. To stop them from wrecking the world, legendary Pokémon from Kalos stepped in."
He paused, his aura darkening. "Xerneas and Yveltal." The names carried weight, making Ben shiver.
'Life and death themselves,' he thought, his aura uneasy.
Gladion continued, "I believe their power, clashing with Groudon and Kyogre's, created the Mega Stones. When Hoenn's borders opened along with Pokémon migrating before that, some stones spread to Kanto and Johto."
'It's just a theory, but it fits. It was never explained how these stones were formed din the anime,' he thought.
