"Prepare for the assault," the Venators' Chapter Master ordered, turning towards his captains. "We will strike the traitors on their left flank, then swing south and drive them towards the kill zone prepared by the Warhawks. Once the enemy enters the designated area, the Warhawks will close the trap and attack from their concealed positions."
His captains acknowledged the order, already studying the tactical projections displayed before them. The hololithic map showed the positions of the Black Legion forces, their defensive lines, and the routes the Venators would use to execute their assault.
"We must maintain our momentum without allowing the traitors to divide our forces," the Chapter Master continued. "Their numbers and firepower are considerable, but we have the advantage of knowing the terrain and coordinating our attacks. Do not allow the Black Legion to dictate the pace of this engagement. We will force them to react to us."
He then turned towards a Techmarine standing beside the tactical hololith.
"Make sure the Predators, Rhinos, and Land Raiders are all prepared," he ordered. "We will launch the assault with an armoured attack to force the traitors out of their defensive positions. The Predators will suppress their heavy weapons and fortifications, while the Land Raiders spearhead the advance. The Rhinos will carry our Brothers forward once the enemy's defensive line begins to buckle."
"Understood, Chapter Master," the Techmarine replied, bowing his head before turning to relay the orders.
The Chapter Master then faced the two Captains of the 5th and 8th companies.
"Once our armour breaks through their outer defences, I want both of you to engage the traitors in close combat. Use your Rhinos to deliver your squads into the thick of the fighting, or deploy with jump packs to strike directly at their positions. I do not care which method you choose, so long as you exploit the opening we create and prevent the enemy from reorganising."
The two Captains exchanged a brief glance before returning their attention to their Chapter Master.
"The 5th Company will strike their center once the armoured column has drawn their attention," the first Captain reported. "We will use the Rhinos to close the distance, then dismount and clear their defensive positions."
"The 8th will attack from above," the second Captain added. "Our assault squads will bypass their outer defences and descend upon their firing positions using the jump packs. Once their heavy weapons are silenced, the rest of the companies can advance to reinforce the breach."
"Then this will be our first phase," the Chapter Master declared, looking around at his assembled captains. "The 1st Company will remain in reserve. They will serve as our fist against the Bringers of Despair should those traitors enter the battlefield. I will not commit our veterans prematurely, not when we have yet to determine whether the Despoiler himself is present."
He moved his attention towards another section of the hololith, where the Warhawks' defensive positions were marked.
"The 3rd Company will assist the Warhawks in protecting our base. Make sure we do not lose the only area where we can resupply, repair our equipment, and rest. Whatever happens on the battlefield, this base must remain in our hands."
He paused, studying the surrounding terrain before continuing.
"If the traitors attempt to outflank the base perimeter, you are authorised to advance beyond our defensive lines and engage them before they can establish a foothold. I have already informed the Warhawks of this arrangement. Their forces will support you during any counterattack, so coordinate with their commanders and ensure that our two Chapters operate as a single fighting force."
The 3rd Company Captain nodded firmly.
"Understood, Chapter Master. We will hold the base and ensure that no traitor force reaches our rear."
"What about the rest of the companies?" the Captain of the 5th Company asked.
"The rest of you will serve as our second wave," the Chapter Master replied. "The moment the first wave secures a breach in the enemy line, the second wave will advance and engage the traitors head-on. Your task will be to pin them in place, preventing them from reinforcing their threatened flank or withdrawing in good order. While you keep their attention fixed upon your advance, the first wave will strike from the flank and drive them towards the Warhawks' kill zone."
He gestured towards the projected battlefield, tracing the intended movements of the two assault groups with his finger.
"The first wave will break their formation and force them to react. The second wave will deny them the opportunity to recover. Once the Warhawks begin their attack, the enemy will find itself caught between our advancing companies and their prepared defences. We must ensure that every element of this operation supports the others. If one formation advances too early or another falls behind, we risk allowing the Black Legion to escape the trap."
His gaze then shifted towards the hololithic projection of the fleet in orbit, where the 4th Company's position was marked.
"The 4th Company will remain in orbit alongside our fleet. Your primary responsibility is to watch for any traitor reinforcements entering the system. Maintain constant communication with the Warhawks' void fleet and share all relevant auspex readings. I do not want either fleet caught unaware by an enemy translation from the Warp."
The 4th Company Captain acknowledged the order through the hololithic display.
"Understood. We will establish overlapping augur coverage with the Warhawks and maintain a reserve squadron ready to intercept any hostile vessels."
"But," the Chapter Master continued, raising one hand before the captain could say anything further, "make sure your company is also prepared for a possible orbital insertion. Should the situation on the ground deteriorate, or should we discover a critical enemy position that cannot be taken by our advancing forces, I want the 4th Company ready to deploy directly into the battlefield."
He narrowed his eyes at the hololith.
"Prepare your Drop Pods and Thunderhawks for immediate deployment. Keep your squads equipped for a rapid insertion, and ensure that the fleet can provide whatever fire support they require. You are to remain in orbit, but you must be ready to abandon that position the moment I give the order."
"Understood, Chapter Master."
"Good. We cannot predict every move the Black Legion will make, but we can prepare ourselves to respond to them. Our fleet must guard against reinforcements, our base must remain secure, and our companies must be ready to exploit every opportunity the battlefield provides."
He straightened and looked around the chamber, meeting the gaze of each captain in turn.
"Remember, we are not fighting this battle alone. The Warhawks are depending upon us, just as we depend upon them. Our success will be measured not by the number of traitors we kill, but by whether we accomplish our objective and ensure that both Chapters remain capable of fighting another day."
The captains saluted in unison.
"By the Emperor's will, Chapter Master."
He returned their salute before turning back towards the hololith.
"Now, make your preparations. The Black Legion has had enough time to fortify its positions. It is time we gave them a reason to leave them."
===
The following morning, the silence of dawn was shattered by the roar of engines.
At the center of the base, a large concentration of armoured vehicles had assembled, their hulls glistening beneath the pale morning light. Engine exhaust drifted across the ground as Techmarines and their servitors conducted final inspections, checking weapon systems, power couplings, and track assemblies before the column's departure.
Five Land Raiders stood at the forefront, their massive hulls dwarfing the vehicles around them. Behind them stood twelve Predators, their turrets equipped with weapons capable of tearing through enemy armour and fortified positions. Twenty-five Razorbacks completed the formation, their transports ready to carry squads of Space Marines into battle.
These were all the armoured vehicles the two Chapters had left for the expedition.
The remaining Rhinos had been left behind for the Warhawks, providing the Chapter with the transports it needed to continue its operations and establish defensive blockades. Even among the twenty-five Razorbacks assembled before them, ten had originally belonged to the Warhawks.
It was a considerable sacrifice for two Chapters already stretched thin by years of continuous warfare.
The Venators and Warhawks had long operated along the northern reaches of Segmentum Obscurus and Segmentum Ultima, where Imperial authority grew increasingly tenuous as one travelled farther from the established routes of Imperial expansion. Their campaigns had taken them against renegade warbands, invading xenos empires, and the countless horrors lurking beyond the borders of charted Imperial space. On more than one occasion, their operations had carried them beyond the known edge of the galaxy, into regions where reliable communications and reinforcements were little more than distant hopes.
Such a life had forged a close partnership between the two Chapters.
They had fought beside one another through campaigns that lasted years, shared supplies when one Chapter's reserves ran low, and reinforced each other's positions when circumstances threatened to overwhelm them. Their warriors had become familiar with one another's battle doctrines, and their commanders had learned to trust each other's judgement.
In the field, the distinction between the Venators and the Warhawks often mattered less than the knowledge that another Chapter would answer their call for aid.
There was another connection between them, one that had never been conclusively established.
Both Chapters were believed to descend from the gene-lineage of Rogal Dorn, the Primarch of the Imperial Fists. Yet the Imperial Fists did not recognise either Chapter as one of their successors, and the surviving records concerning the Venators and Warhawks were too badly damaged to establish their origins with certainty.
Whether the damage had resulted from the passage of millennia, the destruction of archival repositories, or deliberate concealment remained unknown.
Without intact gene-seed records and reliable founding documents, speculation was all that remained.
Neither Chapter had allowed the uncertainty to define its identity. Whatever their origins, the Venators and Warhawks had spent centuries earning their place in the Imperium through their own deeds, shedding blood in distant war zones where few other Imperial forces dared to venture.
Now, their long-standing partnership had brought them to the Elysia Sector, to face Abaddon 5th Black Crusade.
Once the Techmarines and Tech-priests had completed their inspections and final preparations, the armoured column immediately departed the base.
Engines roared as the five Land Raiders led the advance, their massive tracks crushing rubble beneath them. The twelve Predators followed close behind, their turrets scanning the surrounding terrain for potential threats, while the twenty-five Razorbacks maintained formation around the infantry they carried.
The column moved north toward its objective.
They encountered resistance almost immediately. Small groups of traitor guards attempted to establish roadblocks and ambush the advancing force, hoping to delay the loyalists long enough for reinforcements to arrive. Their efforts proved futile.
The Land Raiders smashed through hastily constructed barricades, while the Predators answered enemy fire with devastating volleys from their turret weapons. Razorbacks swept along the flanks, their heavy bolters and assault cannons cutting down traitors who attempted to regroup along the roadside.
After thirty minutes of fighting and continuous movement, the armoured column finally reached its destination.
Before them stretched the traitor defensive line.
It was not an impressive fortification by Imperial standards. The enemy had erected barricades from wrecked vehicles, abandoned industrial machinery, and whatever other materials they could salvage. Trenches had been dug across the main approaches, while makeshift firing positions occupied the remains of nearby buildings.
Behind these defences gathered thousands of cultists.
They carried an assortment of weapons, ranging from battered autoguns and lasguns to crude explosives and improvised melee weapons. Some wore scraps of stolen military uniforms, while others had adorned themselves with symbols of the Dark Gods. Their ranks were disorganised, their equipment inconsistent, and their training almost nonexistent.
Yet they possessed one advantage.
Numbers.
The cultists filled the defensive positions in dense formations, their sheer presence creating a seemingly endless mass of bodies between the loyalists and their objective.
Scattered throughout their ranks were smaller groups of traitor guards. Unlike the cultists, these soldiers wore proper combat armour and carried standardised weapons. They occupied the more defensible positions, directed the cultists' movements, and coordinated whatever semblance of resistance the traitors could muster.
Their most important duty, however, was not to fight the advancing loyalists.
It was to prevent their own forces from fleeing.
The traitor guards had established firing positions behind the cultist formations, where they could observe the battlefield and execute anyone who abandoned their assigned post. Whenever a cultist attempted to escape, a traitor soldier would shoot him down without hesitation. The bodies of those who had already tried lay scattered behind the defensive line, serving as a grim warning to the rest.
As the armoured column drew closer, one of the traitor guards finally spotted the approaching vehicles.
For a moment, he stared in disbelief.
Then he began shouting orders.
"Armour approaching! Heavy weapons, open fire! Take those vehicles out before they reach the barricades!"
The defensive line erupted into frantic activity.
Cultists scrambled toward their weapons, dragging lascannons and rocket launchers into firing positions. Others rushed to retrieve ammunition or attempted to steady the heavy weapons mounted behind the barricades. Their movements were disorganised, their coordination poor, and many had never fired at an armoured vehicle in their lives.
Nevertheless, they opened fire.
Lascannon beams lanced across the battlefield, while rockets streaked through the air in thick trails of smoke. Explosions erupted around the advancing column, throwing dirt and debris into the air. Several rockets struck the ground short of their targets, while others sailed harmlessly overhead or detonated against abandoned structures.
The few shots that found their mark proved equally ineffective.
A lascannon beam struck the frontal armour of a Land Raider, its energy dispersing across the vehicle's reinforced plating. Another shot struck a Predator's side armour at an unfavourable angle, leaving a blackened scar but failing to penetrate. A rocket exploded against the hull of a Razorback, engulfing it in smoke and flame.
The transport rocked under the impact but continued forward.
Inside, the Space Marines barely reacted.
Their vehicles had been designed to withstand far more formidable weapons than those wielded by an ill-trained mob of cultists.
The bombardment continued for several moments, with the traitors expending ammunition at an alarming rate. Their heavy weapon crews struggled to reload, while others abandoned their positions whenever the return fire appeared imminent.
Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the barrage faltered.
The cultists had little ammunition left, and their commanders were struggling to maintain even the most basic semblance of discipline.
Seeing opportunity, the Venators 5th company captain immediatly order to return fire.
"Return fire!"
The Land Raiders' lascannons discharged first.
Brilliant beams of concentrated energy crossed the battlefield and struck the traitor firing positions. One lascannon emplacement vanished in a blinding explosion, its weapon and crew consumed in a flash of incandescent light. Another beam tore through a barricade, obliterating the cultists sheltering behind it and scattering the wreckage across the surrounding trenches.
The Predators answered with their autocannons.
Their turrets traversed toward the enemy positions, and a thunderous barrage of explosive shells swept across the defensive line. Barricades shattered under repeated impacts. Heavy weapon teams were torn apart before they could reload, while cultists caught in the open disappeared beneath clouds of dust, blood, and fragments of shattered masonry.
As the bombardment continued, the cultists' morale began to crumble.
They had been promised that the defensive line would hold. Their overseers had assured them that the loyalists would be slaughtered before they could reach the barricades. Some had even been told that the Dark Gods would protect those who remained faithful.
Now, they watched as lascannon beams burned through their fortifications and autocannon shells tore apart the men standing beside them.
A cultist dropped his autogun and fled.
Another followed, stumbling over the bodies scattered across the trench before scrambling toward the rear of the defensive line. Within moments, dozens more abandoned their positions, throwing down their weapons and running in every direction.
"Hold your positions!" a traitor guard shouted. "Anyone who retreats will be shot!"
His warning was met with terror-stricken faces and desperate glances toward the advancing armoured column.
Then another Predator salvo struck the barricade beside him.
The explosion hurled him from his feet, silencing his commands beneath the roar of detonating ammunition and collapsing fortifications.
The cultists needed no further encouragement.
Their formation dissolved into chaos. Some tried to flee toward the ruined buildings behind them, while others threw themselves into trenches, desperately seeking shelter from the relentless barrage. A few even attempted to surrender, raising their hands and abandoning their weapons in the hope that the approaching Astartes might spare them.
The traitor guards attempted to restore order, firing into the fleeing crowds and killing those who refused to return to their posts. But their efforts only deepened the panic.
The cultists had finally realised the truth.
Their masters had never intended for them to survive.
They were nothing more than disposable bodies, placed in the path of the loyalists to absorb their ammunition and delay their advance.
And now, with the defensive line collapsing around them, they were beginning to understand that the enemy approaching through the smoke might be their only chance of escape.
The Land Raiders continued forward, their engines roaring as they crushed the remains of the barricades beneath their tracks.
Behind them, the Predators maintained their fire.
As the column drew closer, the Razorbacks joined the bombardment. Twin heavy bolters thundered in unison, while twin assault cannons spun up and unleashed streams of explosive rounds. Their fire swept across the remaining traitor positions, shredding makeshift fortifications and cutting down cultists who were still desperately attempting to resist.
The few traitor guards who retained their discipline tried to rally the survivors, but their commands were drowned out by the roar of engines and the relentless storm of gunfire.
Then the armoured column broke through.
The Land Raiders smashed through the final barricades, their massive hulls forcing a path into the heart of the enemy position. Razorbacks followed close behind, rolling over abandoned weapons and shattered debris as the Predators advanced to provide covering fire.
The moment the vehicles had penetrated the defensive line, their assault ramps descended.
The 5th Company squads inside the Land Raiders charged out, their power-armoured forms emerging through clouds of dust and exhaust fumes. Some deployed from nearby Razorbacks, spreading across the battlefield as their sergeants barked orders over the squad vox channels.
Bolters roared.
Mass-reactive shells tore through the remaining cultists, detonating inside bodies and scattering those caught in the open. The Astartes advanced in disciplined formations, their bolters raised as they methodically cleared the surviving firing positions.
Then, without warning, two Predators exploded simultaneously.
The first vanished beneath a tremendous fireball as its ammunition detonated, sending fragments of armour and burning debris across the battlefield. Almost at the same instant, the second tank suffered a direct hit, its hull rupturing as flames erupted from within.
The shockwaves swept across the surrounding ruins, knocking several unprepared Astartes off their feet. Nearby cultists were hurled through the air, while the advancing Space Marines instinctively ducked behind whatever cover remained.
The Captain of the Venators' 5th Company immediately turned toward the direction from which the shots had originated. Information streamed across his helmet's HUD as the onboard cogitator processed data from his auspex, tracking the trajectories of the incoming fire and identifying several silhouettes moving through the smoke.
He did not need to wait for the analysis to finish.
The enemy's approach, the precision of the opening salvo, and the devastating firepower they had brought to bear told him everything he needed to know.
"Traitors from the 4th," he growled into the vox. "All units, we have hostile Astartes and possible armour approaching from the eastern ruins. Confirm your positions and prepare to engage."
His transmission spread across the Chapter's command network, alerting every nearby squad to the sudden change in the battlefield situation.
Elsewhere along the advance, the Captain of the 8th Company received the warning.
He immediately turned toward his own company.
"8th, dismount! Prepare yourself. I want a coordinate strike on the traitor armour the moment they come to the open space. Move!"
Razorback ramps descended, and squads of Astartes poured into the streets, chainswords raised as they sought cover among the shattered buildings. Their jumppack roar as they prepare to jump in whenever needed.
But the traitors had already begun their second volley.
A series of explosions erupted across the battlefield.
One Predator was struck amidships, its turret torn away by the force of the impact. Another was engulfed in flames as a shell penetrated its side armour and detonated within the fighting compartment. Further along the line, two Razorbacks suffered direct hits, one thrown sideways by the explosion while the other became a burning wreck beneath a collapsing wall.
Then the smoke began to clear.
Silhouettes emerged from the ash and drifting dust, advancing through the ruins with the measured confidence of warriors who had fought this kind of battle many times before.
They were Astartes.
Their power armour was painted silver, its surface complemented by gold trim. Across their pauldrons, greaves, and other armour plates ran the unmistakable black-and-gold striped pattern associated with the warriors who had betrayed the Imperium during the Horus Heresy.
There could be no mistaking their allegiance.
Traitors of the 4th Legion.
The Iron Warriors had arrived.
Yet it was not the traitor Astartes who first drew the attention of the Venators' Fifth Company.
It was the armoured vehicles advancing beside them.
The 5th Captain's helmet cogitator immediately began analysing the vehicle's silhouette, comparing its dimensions and configuration against the armoury records available to him.
A designation appeared across his HUD.
KRATOS BATTLE TANK.
The Captain stared at the identification for a moment.
"Kratos battle tank..." he murmured.
The first Kratos continued advancing, its weapons tracking the loyalist vehicles that remained operational.
Then another emerged from the same avenue.
And a third followed close behind.
Three Kratos battle tanks advanced through the smoke, their heavy armour bearing the scars of countless battles. Their weapon systems traversed toward the Venators, while the Iron Warriors accompanying them spread through the surrounding ruins.
One of the traitors raised his bolter toward the loyalist positions.
"Followers of the Corpse-Emperor!" he roared over an external vox amplifier. "Today shall be your doom!"
At the end of his declaration, all three Kratos fired simultaneously.
Their battle cannons thundered.
The explosions tore through the loyalist formation, shaking the ground and sending enormous clouds of dust and debris into the air. One shell struck a Predator directly, obliterating its turret in a violent explosion. Another detonated beside a Razorback, throwing the transport onto its side and scattering its occupants across the rubble. The third struck the ground beneath a group of advancing Astartes, engulfing them in fire and shrapnel.
The Venators' armoured advance was thrown into disarray.
"Find cover! Now!" the Captain of the 5th Company shouted.
He sprinted toward the remains of a nearby building, his boots pounding against the rubble as he fired his bolter at the advancing Iron Warriors. A traitor exposed himself behind a shattered wall, raising his weapon toward the retreating loyalists.
The Captain's burst struck him squarely in the chest.
The Iron Warrior staggered backward before his armour ruptured under the detonations of the mass-reactive shells. He collapsed behind the wall, but the Captain had already moved on, seeking cover before the next barrage arrived.
Across the battlefield, the surviving Predators and Razorbacks began reversing away from the advancing Kratos. Their engines roared as they manoeuvred through the ruined streets, seeking positions behind collapsed buildings and piles of shattered masonry.
The Razorbacks continued firing as they withdrew, their heavy bolters and assault cannons attempting to suppress the Iron Warriors advancing behind the tanks. Explosive shells tore through the ruins, forcing several traitors to seek cover.
But the Iron Warriors pressed forward regardless.
They had fought in countless sieges and armoured engagements throughout the long millennia of the Long War. They knew how to exploit a breakthrough, and they understood that the loyalists' exposed vehicles were vulnerable while attempting to reposition.
The Kratos continued firing, their battle cannons pounding the area where the loyalist armour had been moments earlier.
The Land Raiders, however, refused to retreat.
Their massive hulls turned toward the approaching enemy tanks, their reinforced frontal armour facing the incoming fire. Lascannon turrets traversed into position, and their gunners began acquiring targets.
The first Land Raider fired.
Twin beams of concentrated energy lanced across the battlefield and struck the leading Kratos. The impact scorched its frontal armour, leaving glowing scars across the plating, but the traitor tank continued advancing.
The Kratos answered with another salvo.
Its battle cannon fired, the shell screaming toward the Land Raider. The loyalist driver reacted immediately, steering the massive vehicle behind the remains of a collapsed structure. The shell struck the ruins instead, reducing the already-damaged building to a cloud of pulverised stone.
The Land Raider emerged from the opposite side, its lascannons firing again.
This time, the beams struck the Kratos along its flank, burning into the armour and forcing the traitor tank to adjust its position.
The duel had begun.
The remaining Land Raiders joined the engagement, manoeuvring through the ruined streets while exchanging fire with the three Kratos. Their drivers exploited every available piece of cover, using shattered buildings and collapsed walls to obstruct the enemy's line of sight before emerging to deliver their own volleys.
Lascannon beams flashed between the ruins.
Battle cannon shells detonated against buildings and roadways, sending debris cascading over the battlefield.
Neither side could afford to remain stationary for long. A tank that exposed itself for too many seconds risked suffering a direct hit, and even the formidable armour of a Land Raider could not withstand an unlimited barrage from three Kratos battle tanks.
Behind the loyalist armour, the Venators 5th Company begin reorganize themselves for a counterattack to support the Land Raiders.
Sergeants directed their squads into cover, while the Devastator squads searched for suitable firing positions from which they could engage both the traitor vehicles and the advancing Iron Warriors. Heavy bolters and missile launchers were brought into position, their operators scanning the battlefield for targets of opportunity.
The Captain of the 5th studied the tactical information displayed across his helmet's HUD. Friendly and hostile icons flickered across the ruins, accompanied by damage reports from the surviving vehicles and incoming assessments from his squad leaders.
He began issuing orders, assigning squads to reinforce the Land Raiders while directing the Devastators toward positions with clear lines of fire against the Kratos. Other squads would advance through the ruins to engage the Iron Warriors attempting to exploit the armoured assault.
But before he could finalise the deployment of every squad, a new sound rose above the battlefield.
The roar of jump packs.
The Captain looked up.
Armoured figures descended through the smoke, their jump packs blazing as they swept over the ruined buildings. The warriors adjusted their descent at the last moment, landing upon rooftops and elevated positions that still stood around the area where the first Predator had been destroyed.
The Venators' 8th Company had arrived.
