Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The VR Challenge

The air in the classroom buzzed with anticipation as Professor Draven made his next announcement. "For those of you placed in the lower classes Epsilon, Delta, and even Gamma there will be opportunities to rank up. These chances will come in the form of virtual reality challenges."

Alex sat up straight, his mind racing. He had heard about the VR pods, but they were reserved for high-level training, designed to push students to their limits. The idea of being able to prove himself in the VR pod intrigued him. It was a chance to show that his low rank wasn't a reflection of his real abilities.

Professor Draven continued, "You will enter the VR pod and be pitted against simulated opponents. Victory will earn you points, and those who accumulate enough points will be considered for promotion to higher ranks."

Murmurs of excitement filled the room. This was their opportunity to climb the ranks, to show what they were really made of. But Alex knew the real battle wasn't with the simulation it was with himself. He had to keep his powers a secret, and using the VR pod would be risky.

As the day went on, Alex's thoughts kept circling back to the Shadow Orb. It had been growing stronger ever since it hatched, and the strange occurrences in his body were becoming more frequent. That night, as he lay in bed, a familiar sensation washed over him his skin prickling with energy, shadows shifting unnaturally in the corners of the room.

Then, it happened. His body felt like it was on fire, a surge of power flooding his veins. The Shadow Orb was evolving again. His head pounded, and his vision blurred for a moment before clarity returned. The moment the evolution was complete, a new skill formed in his mind Shadow Strike.

The new ability was different from Shadow Flicker. While Flicker allowed him to move through shadows quickly, Shadow Strike focused that energy into a powerful offensive technique. He could sense the potential of the skill, the ability to strike with the force of a shadow, blending speed and power into one devastating attack. But he would need to practice, to understand its limits.

The next morning, Alex made a decision. He needed to be prepared for the VR challenges, and there was only one person who could help him with that: Jasper.

He found Jasper in their usual spot behind the school, hunched over his tech like always. Alex approached quietly, not wanting to draw too much attention.

"Jasper," Alex called out.

Jasper looked up from his screen, his face as neutral as always. "Alex. What do you need?"

Alex took a deep breath, deciding to be straightforward. "I need your help. I'm going to enter the VR pod for the ranking challenges, but I want to customize my appearance and abilities while I'm in there."

Jasper raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. "Customize? Why?"

Alex hesitated. He couldn't tell Jasper about the Shadow Orb—at least, not yet. But he could be vague enough to get what he needed. "I just want to keep a low profile. If I do well in the VR challenges, people might start paying more attention to me. I need to make sure no one figures out... certain things."

Jasper leaned back, considering Alex's request. "You're asking me to hack into the VR system so you can tweak your avatar, your abilities, and your performance... all without anyone noticing."

Alex nodded. "Exactly. Can you do it?"

Jasper smirked, clearly enjoying the challenge. "Of course I can. But what's in it for me?"

Alex clenched his fists. He knew Jasper wouldn't do this for free. "What do you want?"

Jasper's smirk widened. "I want access to the school's higher-level Tay research. I need more data for my project, and your little trick in the archives wasn't enough. If you can get me that, I'll help you with the VR pod."

Alex frowned. That was a dangerous request, especially considering the extra security in place around the higher-level data. But he didn't have much of a choice. If he wanted to keep his Tay abilities hidden, he needed Jasper's help.

"Fine," Alex said reluctantly. "I'll get you the data."

Jasper's smirk turned into a full grin. "Deal. Meet me after class, and I'll set up the modifications for you."

Later that day, after class ended, Alex followed Jasper to an isolated tech lab where the VR pods were housed. Jasper got to work immediately, connecting his device to the school's system. His fingers flew across the screen, hacking into the VR interface like it was second nature.

"Alright," Jasper said after a few minutes. "I've programmed the modifications into your pod. When you enter, your avatar will look different, and you'll have full control over what abilities you display. No one will suspect a thing."

Alex nodded, feeling a weight lift off his shoulders. "Thanks, Jasper."

Jasper waved him off. "Just remember your end of the deal."

The next day, the students were led to the VR chamber, a large room filled with sleek, futuristic pods lined up in rows. Alex's heart raced as he stepped toward one of the pods, wondering how well his new skills would fare against the virtual opponents.

He slid into the pod, the sleek surface molding to his body as he adjusted the visor over his eyes. The screen lit up, the VR world slowly coming into focus as the simulation began. His avatar materialized in a vast, dark forest the location of his first challenge.

Alex checked his hands and body. As promised, Jasper had modified his appearance his avatar looked different, unrecognizable from his real self. And more importantly, none of his Tay abilities were visible.

But in his mind, he felt the Shadow Orb stir. The power of Shadow Flicker and Shadow Strike pulsed inside him, ready to be unleashed at a moment's notice.

Taking a deep breath, Alex focused. The first opponent appeared in the distance, a hulking beast with sharp claws and glowing eyes. This was it his chance to prove himself, to climb the ranks without revealing his true strength.

As the beast charged toward him, Alex's hands began to glow with shadowy energy. The fight had begun.
