"Victor..." I called out, my voice cutting through the awkward silence that had been hanging between us for way too long.
"What's up?" he answered, glancing over at me with one eyebrow raised in that casual way of his.
"Is everything okay with you?" I asked, studying his face carefully. Something was definitely off. His eyes flickered away from mine for just a moment before he turned to look straight ahead again.
"Everything's fine," he said, but his voice came out flat and cold, like he was trying to shut down the conversation before it even started.
Right. And I was supposed to believe that? I'd have to be completely brain-dead to buy into that obvious lie.
