"Come on, just listen to me," I called out, hurrying to catch up with Selena as she headed toward her dorm room. My breath was still coming in short bursts from running across campus.
"What do you want?" she asked, turning to face me with a deep frown etched across her features. The coldness in her voice made my chest tighten.
This whole situation felt so bizarre, so unlike anything I'd experienced before.
"Here," I said, extending my hand toward her. She regarded the small box in my palm with narrowed, suspicious eyes, as if I were offering her something dangerous.
"What is that?" Her voice carried a note of wariness.
"Just look at what's inside first," I replied, unable to keep the exasperation from creeping into my tone. After a moment's hesitation, she took the box from my hand and carefully lifted the lid.
"Is this—?" she began to ask, but I cut her off before she could finish.
