When Milly activated her talent, Aegar could swear he felt an almost ethereal quality to the room, as if for the briefest of moments time stood still. Then all of the blood dripping onto the floor, the puddles still congealing, and the single droplet from Milly's finger started vibrating in concert. An almost unseen force gazed upon only by Aegar gripped the blood and forced it into hundreds of thousands of droplets in the air. It almost looked like a red grid was formed in the air.
Aegar walked in-between the drops, careful not to touch any of them. He was absolutely mesmerized by the beautiful yet macabre sight. After a brief moment, his eyes caught sight of a peculiar colored drop of blood amongst all of the droplets. It was golden colored and he reached out to touch it entirely on instinct.
"Kid, stop!" Hawk cried but his plea fell on deaf ears for to Aegar it seemed as if his voice was far away. Nothing mattered but the very moment his hand reached for the droplet of blood. His index finger made contact with the droplet just as Hawk grabbed his arm. The entire room flashed in a brilliant silver light and invisible waves of force spread out from the point of contact like gales of wind.
Hawk and Lars were blasted into the nearby walls, their toughened bodies suffering only a minor bruise while the stone walls they flew into cracked in a spiderweb-like pattern. Milly, the initiator of the ritual, was rooted to the spot but her eyes flew wide open even as her mouth and voice kept the chant going. Linda's body rose into the air and all the droplets turned to a silver-mercurial color before coalescing at her shoulder where her arm was missing.
After another brilliant flash of light blinded everyone in the room and when they opened their eyes they all collectively gasped. Not only was Linda's arm healed, but silver colored veins crawled up and down her arm visibly. A golden rune flashed on her forehead entirely without notice.
Hawk was the first to regain his bearings and for the first time since Aegar met him, he had a serious expression on his face.
"A God-child...you. You are a God-child!" Hawk turned to Aegar. "That explains you being able to see aura without having gone through your Ceremony. This changes everything."
"A what child?" Lars was picking himself up off the floor.
"No, no, no, no, no, no!" Milly shouted, she stood stiffly and aggressively pointed herself sideways at Aegar. "That's not possible! The last God-child died ages ago and took half the Holy Empire with him!"
Hawked laughed, it was obnoxiously loud and came straight from his chest. "Heh. We'll know when Linda wakes, but I would bet everything I have that the kid is indeed a God-child."
"We can't keep him, Hawk! It would put the entire operation at risk!" Milly said seriously. "Besides, we don't even know what his power is or if one or both of his parents are gods!"
"It doesn't matter, Millicent." Hawk drew himself up to his full height, the slouch in his posture and the relaxed way he carried himself entirely gone. It was replaced with a regal yet militaristic bearing. "He has what we need, so we'll use him. You wanted a way to prevent this---" Hawk waved his hand at Linda on the table. "from happening again. Well here it is. Suck it up and do your job."
Milly looked at Hawk for a second before muttering, "I hate this," and storming out of the room.
Hawk turned to Aegar who blinked and all signs of the stern non-nonsense man had disappeared and it was the regular old slouching, grin-wearing, no posture having Knight.
"Heh. Sorry you had to see all that kid. Tell you what, Lars here will take ya to get something to eat and then we'll explain everything to ya. Sound good?"
Aegar looked up at the grinning man and not wanting to get on his bad side just dumbly nodded.
"Excellent! Lars, take the kid to get some food. I'm pretty sure he's starving right now." And as if to justify that statement, Aegar's stomach chose that moment to rumble loudly. He did feel kind of faint.
"Sir!" Lars saluted Hawk before spinning on his heel and marching towards the door. "This way, child."
Lars led him down the hall silently. He noticed that not even Lars' footsteps produced any sort of noise, nor did the fabric of his robe rustle as he moved.
"Assassin training. The first thing we learn is to be silent," Lars said. It was almost as if he was reading Aegar's mind. "The second is to be observant. I am sure you think I am reading your mind, but I had merely observed you observing the way I move. With years of training, you too could be this silent, child."
"I'm not a child and I wasn't observing you." Aegar muttered indignantly like a child who'd been caught doing the thing he said he wasn't doing.
"Indeed." Lars replied disbelievingly and they continued on in silence. The conversation was short, only a few awkward minutes long, but it was enough to fill the void between the previous room and the dining room.
Lars and Aegar arrived in front of a door in a hallway connected to the bedrooms. There wasn't anything special about the door, but Aegar thought it was weird to have a tick wooden door instead of a regular thin door.
"It keeps the scent of food from filling the hallways." Lars explained without prompt. "It's quite hard to prepare for missions or plan anything when you constantly smell food."
Aegar nodded. That made sense to him. Lars breathed a sigh of relief, though Aegar as innocent as he was, took that as a sign Lars was getting annoyed at having to chaperone him. It never occurred to Aegar that the door was much, much thicker than a regular door for reasons other than "food smells".
Lars opened the door for Aegar who entered almost immediately. Lars took a quick look around and seeing the coast was clear, quietly closed the door without so much a squeak. The door shut and made a clicking sound, sealing both Lars and Aegar inside.
