Chapter 6 - After the role call

As Professor Caldria finished calling the roll, Zane's heart raced. The reality of being in Class 1-D—the same class as the main characters he had only read about—settled heavily on his shoulders. He felt the weight of their stares, the unspoken judgments swirling around him like a thick fog.

"Now that we have established attendance," Professor Caldria said, her voice cutting through the tension, "I want to remind you that your ranks are not set in stone. This is an opportunity for growth. Support each other, and you may find yourselves surprising one another by the end of the year."

Zane kept his gaze on the desk in front of him, acutely aware of the other students' eyes. He glanced sideways, catching sight of Emma Hyndham, her presence both captivating and intimidating. Her brown hair framed her face perfectly, and her green eyes seemed to sparkle with confidence. The thought of being in the same class as her and the other protagonists felt surreal.

"Please download the academy app if you haven't done so already," Professor Caldria continued. "It will provide you with essential information regarding your schedules and any additional assignments. I expect you all to familiarize yourselves with it."

Zane had already downloaded the app, and he quickly checked his schedule once more. It felt like a cruel twist of fate to be in a class with characters who would, inevitably, face calamities and chaos throughout the year.

"Now, let's move on to our first lesson," the professor said, flipping open a large tome that seemed to emanate an ancient aura. "Today, we will begin with a discussion on the fundamentals of magic and its applications in both combat and everyday life."

As she spoke, Zane's mind wandered. He couldn't shake the feeling that his presence in this class was a mistake. He was already ranked 1904 out of 2100, and the others were all far more capable than him. He could sense their skepticism and judgment from across the room.

The lesson continued, but Zane struggled to concentrate. His thoughts kept drifting back to the first impressions he had made, the looks he had received.

Suddenly, a voice broke through his thoughts. "Hey, new guy," came a familiar, friendly tone. Zane turned to see Jin Oliver, the main character's best friend, leaning against the desk beside him with a relaxed smile. "You're in our class now, huh? Must be a bit overwhelming."

"Yeah, you could say that," Zane replied, forcing a smile. "I didn't expect to be in Class 1-D. It's a bit… intimidating."

"Don't sweat it," Jin said, his demeanor reassuring. "Everyone has to start somewhere. Just try to keep up, and you'll do fine. The rest of us can help if you need it."

"Thanks," Zane replied, feeling a flicker of gratitude. Perhaps he wouldn't be completely alone after all.

As the class went on, Zane found himself attempting to absorb the information being presented, though it felt like swimming against a current. The more he learned about magic, the more he realized how far behind he truly was.

When the lesson finally wrapped up, Zane exhaled a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. The other students began to pack their bags, and Zane prepared to head out, eager to escape the spotlight.

"See you around, Zane!" Jin called as he walked past, giving a friendly wave.

"Yeah, see you," Zane responded, managing a small smile despite the lingering anxiety.

As he stepped into the bustling hallway, he felt both relieved and apprehensive. Today had been just the first step, and he still had so much to learn.

With determination steeling within him, Zane headed to his next class, ready to face whatever challenges awaited him in this new world.

As Zane navigated the bustling hallways of the academy, the sounds of chatter and laughter surrounded him. Students exchanged stories about their summer vacations, discussed strategies for the upcoming assignments, and teased one another like old friends. Zane couldn't help but feel like an outsider among them.

He glanced at the app on his phone, which displayed his next class: Combat Fundamentals. The name alone sent a jolt of anxiety through him. Would he be able to keep up with the others? He had read about epic battles and incredible displays of magic in the novel, but those stories felt worlds away from his reality.

Finding the classroom was easier than he anticipated. As he approached, he could hear the clamor of voices inside, punctuated by the sharp commands of the instructor. Zane took a deep breath and opened the door, stepping inside to find a room filled with students already engaged in warm-up exercises.

"Ah, you must be the new student!" a tall, muscular man with a stern expression called out from the front of the room. He wore a military-style uniform, a stark contrast to the casual attire most students donned. "Welcome to Combat Fundamentals. I'm Instructor Redd, and I expect you to give it your all, understood?"

"Yes, Instructor," Zane replied, his voice steady despite the nerves knotting in his stomach.

"Good! Find a spot and join in!" Instructor Redd gestured toward a section of the room filled with mats and equipment. Zane made his way to an empty space, glancing around at the familiar faces of his classmates.

To his dismay, he noticed the same ranks displayed on their uniforms, each marked with a vibrant insignia. He was surrounded by high achievers, with Emma, Jin, and Aiden already displaying their impressive skills. Zane felt a pang of inadequacy wash over him as he took a deep breath, trying to shake off the self-doubt.

"Today, we'll focus on basic combat techniques and the importance of teamwork," Instructor Redd said, pacing the front of the room. "In a few moments, you'll pair up and practice some drills. Remember, fighting isn't just about strength; it's also about strategy."

As Zane moved to join a group, he overheard a few students whispering nearby.

"Did you hear about the new guy? Rank 1904!" one girl snickered.

"Yeah, I wonder how long he'll last in here," another replied, their laughter ringing harshly in Zane's ears.

Trying to block out their remarks, Zane focused on the instructor. "Pair up! Find someone to train with!"

Zane turned to see who he would be paired with, and his heart sank when he found himself standing beside Emma Hyndham. She looked at him with an expression of mild curiosity, her confidence radiating.

"Ready to give it your best shot?" she asked, a playful smile tugging at her lips.

"Uh, yeah, let's do this," Zane replied, feeling a mix of nerves and excitement.

The two moved to the center of the mat as Instructor Redd explained the drill. Zane tried to concentrate on the instructions, but the weight of expectations hung heavy over him. Would he be able to impress Emma or even hold his own in this class?

"Alright, first drill! I want you both to practice your footwork and defensive stances," Instructor Redd called out. "Show me what you've got!"

As they began, Zane found himself trying to mimic Emma's graceful movements. She glided effortlessly, weaving in and out of his range. Zane stumbled a few times, his footwork clumsy in comparison.

"Focus on your balance," Emma encouraged, her voice steady. "You can do this."

Zane nodded, his determination reigniting. He concentrated on his stance, trying to emulate her fluidity. He could feel the stares of his classmates on him—some impressed, others doubtful. Each step he took was a step toward proving himself, no matter how far behind he felt.

As the drill continued, Zane pushed through the embarrassment and focused on improving his technique. With each movement, he found a rhythm, a sense of control that had eluded him earlier. Emma's guidance helped him regain his confidence, and he started to feel like he was part of the class instead of an outsider.

"Better! Just keep your chin up and remember to anticipate your opponent's moves," Emma advised, her tone encouraging.

"Thanks, Emma," Zane said, feeling grateful for her support. "I really appreciate it."

"Everyone has to start somewhere. Just don't let your rank define you," she replied with a wink.

As the class progressed, Zane found himself lost in the drills, the initial embarrassment fading as he focused on his growth. He realized that, while he might be ranked low, he could still improve through hard work and determination.

After an exhausting session filled with drills and exercises, Instructor Redd finally called for a break. Zane wiped the sweat from his brow and took a moment to catch his breath, feeling a sense of accomplishment wash over him.

"Not bad for a first day," Jin said as he approached, clapping Zane on the back. "You held your own out there."

"Thanks, I guess," Zane replied, a small smile creeping onto his face.

"Just keep pushing yourself. You'll be surprised at how quickly you improve," Jin encouraged before heading off to chat with some of the other students.

As Zane watched his classmates interact, he felt a flicker of hope. Perhaps, with time and effort, he could find his place here, in a world where magic and adventure awaited him.

With determination set in his heart, Zane looked forward to what tomorrow would bring.
