Looking at the notification displayed before him, Chris remained stunned for a considerable time.
When the number of defeated champions reaches ten, a Pokemon Tournament would automatically begin?
During his battles with every Gym Leader he had faced, each final Gym Leader had mentioned looking forward to battling him again in the Pokemon Championship. At the time, he had wondered how exactly one would participate in such a championship, thinking it might activate after defeating a regional champion.
After all, in tournaments like these, the Gym Leaders, Elite Four members, and Champions who had been previously defeated would return stronger than before. That made perfect sense - after being defeated for so long, they should naturally have grown more powerful through their experiences.
However, at present, he had only defeated seven champions and still needed three more victories. The seven champions he had conquered were: Wallace from the Hoenn Alliance, Cynthia from the Sinnoh Alliance, Alder from the Unova Alliance, Diantha from the Kalos Alliance, Leon from the Galar Region, Lance from the Johto Region Alliance, and Red from the Indigo Alliance.
Since the Kanto Region and Johto Region were closely connected geographically, the two regions shared Alliance facilities, meaning the Elite Four members and champions of both the Johto Region Alliance and Indigo Alliance were shared between them.
The six champions mentioned above, plus Glenn - the Iron Alliance champion he had just defeated - brought his total to seven. Unfortunately, since he hadn't followed a main storyline in the Alola Region during his journey, he hadn't established an Alliance there, let alone faced a champion.
"Where should I find the remaining three champions?" Chris pondered this question carefully.
Two potential candidates immediately came to mind: Steven, the former champion of the Hoenn Region, and Red from Mt. Silver. However, both of these were former champions rather than current ones. He wasn't certain whether defeating them would count toward his mission's champion tally.
In addition to seeking out champions, he considered other regions and possibilities.
Would Chief Trainer Drake of the Orange Islands qualify as a champion for his purposes?
The Paldea Region remained completely unexplored territory with no clear leads.
However, there were several easily overlooked champions he could potentially seek out.
Blue, who had been champion for a brief time. Since Red existed in this world, Blue's existence was certainly possible as well.
From ancient times, there was Professor Oak, who had been the champion of the Indigo Alliance's first Pokemon tournament.
Also from the distant past was the undefeated legend who served as Chris's mentor in the Galar Region - Mustard, another former champion.
"I should challenge Steven first when I have the opportunity. If defeating him counts toward my total, then I'll consider approaching Professor Oak, Blue, or Red," Chris decided after careful consideration. Among all the potential champions, Steven was the most accessible and easy to contact.
After defeating the Ferrum Region's champion, he would exchange his accumulated points for rewards, effectively marking the end of his exploration of this particular region.
Chris recalled Gengar back to its Poke Ball and was preparing to leave the battlefield amid thunderous applause when the sky above suddenly darkened ominously.
A profound darkness descended from above, completely enveloping the entire Iron Alliance stadium.
In an instant, the entire world seemed to freeze in time. The referees and spectators became like figures in a movie where someone had pressed the pause button, remaining locked in a single moment indefinitely.
Despite this temporal suspension, Chris remained conscious and appeared to be the only one capable of perceiving what was happening.
"What's going on?" Chris frowned as a deep sense of unease settled in his heart.
Gardevoir had already materialized in front of Chris without being called, immediately undergoing Mega Evolution and taking a defensive stance while scanning the area alertly.
On the battlefield nearby, a black portal-like hole suddenly appeared in the air.
A similarly pitch-black figure stepped through the dimensional gateway. What immediately caught Chris's attention was the golden resonance stone embedded deeply into the creature's left shoulder.
Above its head, a name and level indicator appeared clearly:
[Mewtwo LV100]
"Shadow Mewtwo..." Chris's lips trembled slightly as he spoke.
Indeed, the Pokemon before him was unmistakably Mewtwo, but this was no ordinary specimen. Its entire body was jet black, and a golden resonance stone was embedded like a precious gem deep within its shoulder - clear indicators of its unique and dangerous nature.
If Chris hadn't played "Pokken Tournament," he might have mistaken this for a Shiny Mewtwo. However, having experienced that fighting game, Chris recognized this entity's true identity immediately.
The final boss of Pokken Tournament was a Mewtwo corrupted by a Shadow Synergy Stone.
This Pokemon possessed combat abilities that far exceeded those of ordinary Mewtwo specimens. It was the ultimate fighting machine, designed for pure destruction.
But why had Shadow Mewtwo suddenly appeared here, in this place and time?
Could this be related to the Destruction Factor he carried?
Destruction Factor: When equipped, Physical Attack and Special Attack stats are increased by 50%. Psychic-type move power is increased by 50%, and all moves gain a "piercing" effect. Pokemon with levels below 70 have a 50% chance of becoming confused each time they use a move.
After activation: Physical Attack and Special Attack stats are increased by 100%. Psychic-type move power is increased by 100%, and all moves gain a "destruction" effect. Pokemon with levels below 100 have a 100% chance of falling into a confused state lasting 256 turns each time they use a move.
(Note: Creatures that carry and use this item will attract the attention of a certain Pokemon)
The Pokemon mentioned in the Destruction Factor's warning was most likely Mewtwo itself.
So Shadow Mewtwo had come here specifically to confront him about the artifact he possessed?
Chris immediately shifted into a state of high alert.
"Human! You are the strongest trainer I have encountered in this region!" Mewtwo's voice suddenly resonated directly within Chris's mind through telepathy.
"I have one request to make of you!"
"What is it?" Chris called out loudly, his voice echoing across the frozen battlefield.
"Fight... defeat me!" Shadow Mewtwo's final word came out almost as a roar. The golden gleam in its eyes was slowly consumed by spreading darkness the moment those words were spoken, and its slender right hand extended downward with tremendous force.
Mega Gardevoir had already begun responding preemptively to the threat.
Wide Guard, Safeguard, Light Screen, Reflect, and Protect were all deployed simultaneously, along with an immediate Teleport to relocate Chris to safety.
However, before Chris could fully comprehend what was happening, the sound of shattering glass filled the air - "crack, crack, crack!"
Despite Gardevoir's Teleport moving Chris only three meters from his original position, his Mega Gardevoir remained at his previous location and had already been driven deep into the ground by an overwhelming force. All five layers of defensive barriers it had constructed had crumbled instantly before the assault.
A notification appeared in the corner of his vision:
[Your Gardevoir has been defeated and is unable to battle]
Mega Gardevoir had been... defeated with a single strike?
Chris immediately understood that regardless of whether Shadow Mewtwo had come seeking conflict or had other motives, the outcome would be identical.
He would have to defeat this legendary Pokemon first!
"Greninja, I choose you!" Chris reached for another Poke Ball and prepared to release his next Pokemon.
However, the moment he grasped the Poke Ball, his legs suddenly gave way beneath him. The scene before his eyes spun wildly before plunging into complete darkness.
When light and clarity returned to his vision, he found himself lying in bed within his room, holding a handheld gaming device. On the screen, his character was located in the Pokemon Center of the Ferrum Region.
"I was... also defeated in one hit?"
