Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: The Calm Before the Storm

Zhang Wei spent the next two weeks buried in work on the cruiser. With each passing day, the sound of tools clanging and the hum of machinery became as familiar to him as the clatter of plates in the café he used to work at. His days were filled with repairs, upgrades, and a growing excitement for the upcoming mission.

Meanwhile, Frigate 1 had been busy scouting the area around Station 12. Reports came in of several destroyed pirate ships drifting among the debris, remnants of what appeared to be a turf war. Zhang Wei read through the data and couldn't help but feel intrigued. The factional conflicts of space pirates were a chaotic mirror of the territorial disputes that plagued Earth.

Frigate 1 Report Summary:

Location: Sector 12-BFindings:Destroyed Pirate Ships: 6 (from 3 different factions)Debris from Chinese Naval Ship: 1Debris from American Warship: 1Estimated Time of Destruction: 3-4 days agoSigns of Combat: Laser burns and missile impact craters detected

"Interesting," Zhang Wei murmured, piecing together the information. This world was indeed a complex web of politics and power, much like Earth. The Academy sat in a unique position, with its location away from Earth, yet closely tied to the various factions of the different sectors.

The middle ring, where the Academy was located, was a bustling hub of trade, conflict, and alliances. With 18 sectors housing different colony countries, the dynamics were constantly shifting. He knew from his research that the outer ring, with its 24 sectors, was often considered the wild west of space, filled with opportunists and those seeking to make their fortune—or their escape.

"Earth is like a fortress, surrounded by the chaos of the universe," he thought, reflecting on the balance of power. The superpowers—USA, China, Russia, and others—seemed to prefer their sovereignty on Earth rather than venturing into the unknown expanses of space. This left a vacuum for other countries and factions to fill, leading to the rise of mercenaries and pirates in the middle and outer rings.

Zhang Wei pushed his thoughts aside, returning to the task at hand. The cruiser, once a hulking wreck, was beginning to regain its form. He had made considerable progress with the internal systems, and it was time to assess the ship's weaponry. The laser turrets he salvaged were now functional, and he was determined to repair the missile launchers.

As he worked late into the night, his thoughts drifted back to the upcoming mission. He couldn't shake the feeling that the coming weeks would be crucial. The Academy had promised rewards for those who participated in missions, and he hoped that this one would provide enough funds to secure his sister's treatment for a longer term.

His fingers deftly tightened the last bolt on the missile launcher when a notification pinged on his monitor.

"Ding!"

System Notification: Frigate 1 has identified several derelict pirate ships in Sector 12-B. Recommend salvage operations.

Zhang Wei's heart raced. This could be another opportunity to gather resources. "Initiate salvage operations," he commanded, knowing the frigate had the capability to pull in resources and scout the area efficiently.

"Ding!"

Frigate 1 Notification: Commencing salvage operation. Targeting pirate ships for recovery.

As he watched the screen light up with data, he noted that the situation was quite volatile. The report indicated that the pirates had engaged in a fierce battle, leaving debris littering the sector. Salvaging from such battles could yield not just materials but possibly weapons and equipment that were still operational.

Two hours later, a new report came through.

"Ding!"

Frigate 1 Notification: *Salvage operation complete. Acquired items:

3 functional energy-based rifles2 damaged missile launchers (repair required)1 pirate drone (functional)Various ammunition and supplies*

Zhang Wei grinned. "This is just what I need!" The addition of energy rifles would not only enhance his arsenal but also bolster his inventory for future sales. With the damage he had seen, it was likely the pirate factions would be on high alert, and he could capitalize on their misfortune.

"Let's make sure to keep track of all this," he reminded himself, diligently updating his inventory list.

Inventory Update:

Zhang Wei leaned back in his chair, satisfaction flooding through him. In just a short time, he had turned scraps into potential fortune.

As the days rolled on, he continued to work on the cruiser, often thinking of his sister. She was his driving force, the reason he pressed on through the long hours and the endless repairs. He hoped the upcoming mission would bring not just money but also the chance to make a name for himself in this vast universe.

"Two weeks until the mission," he reminded himself, setting his resolve. "I need to be ready."

With that thought, he returned to work, the promise of adventure and opportunity pulsing in his veins like the heartbeat of the cosmos itself.
