Chapter 2 - HIS JOB, HIS LIFE

Chapter Two

The sun was exceptionally bright and it's ray streamed into the ward through the transparent glass window, reflecting the beautiful facial features of the young lady laying motionlessly on the bed, a desolate look on her face as she gave off a melancholic aura.

Angel had woken up that morning, still finding it hard to grasp what had happened.

However, one fact was very clear and obnoxiously glaring in her mind.

Sophie, her best friend was dead.

The murderer was unknown.

The murder was uncanny.

And worst of all, she was the biggest suspect.

Angel had woken up two days ago in the same hospital and has been visited by police since then.

She hated the feeling they gave off.

Do they even realize her best friend was the one who died?

Angel glanced at the sun and turned to look away, turning her back towards the window.

She wanted to cherish the quietness as much as possible before it's disrupted again.

Different memories flashed past her mind and she couldn't control the tears that streamed down her face.

Sophie was the greatest friend of all time.

No one could ever replace her.

The door to the ward slowly creaked open and an old couple who exuded a noble aura walked in together with a young man who seemed to be in his early thirties.

"my angel" the woman's voice cracked towards the end.

Angel frowned in displeasure as she wanted anything but sympathy from her family.

"can I please be alone?" she said, her voice hoarse from crying.

"Angel..."

"mum, you should leave with dad first" Austin, her third elder brother cut their mother short

"but Austin..."

"we should leave, Austin would handle it" her father's voice was as stern as ever.

The couple left leaving her alone with her brother.

"Angel", Austin called, placing his hand on her shoulder.

He could feel it trembling which made his heart clench in agony.

Angel was the heart robe of their family.

The last thing he wanted was to see her this sad and heartbroken.

He would rather go through the pains than see her go through it.

Angel turned to face him, her face tearstricken.

"Austin, I'm so sad and heartbroken. Is Sophie really dead?, she's really gone forever?, she's really not coming back?, I won't get to hug and cuddle her anymore?"

Angel's stream of sad questions pierced his heart really bad.

She was the dearest to his heart.

" don't cry anymore, okay?, the criminal would be caught soon "he assured her

" but they suspect me, Austin, how could I have killed Sophie, Austin?. I loved her more than I love myself! "

" rest assured, Angel. Your fingerprint wasn't found on her and you weren't caught by the cctv so they have no right to detain you. Our family would do everything in our power to protect you. Also, we saw how you fainted from shock upon seeing Sophie's dead body on the footage so it's obvious you're innocent "

Angels ears perked up as her eyes lit up in pleasure.

She sat up and gazed deeply at Austin hopefully.

" the footage?, has it been restored?, then did you see the murderer's face?, who is it?, who killed Sophie? "Angel asked, clearly agitated.

" unfortunately, nothing was restored. The camera was said to be down at that moment. Just don't worry about anything and get well soon,. You'd be discharged in the evening "

" finally, I hate this place so much"she heaved a sigh of relief and Austin stroke her hair dotingly.

"yes, everyone does"

The office, though had the wall painting worn out, was very clean and hardly had a speck of dust in it.

Files were neatly arranged on the desk and a new laptop was placed on it

Stanley wasn't a clean freak but he liked everything being in order.

His fingers worked its way swiftly through the keyboard he held inputed some records on it.

He concluded what he was doing and closed the laptop.

He leaned on the swirling chair and slowly rocked it back and forth as he twirled a fountain pen around his fingers nimbly.

A knock came on the door making him stop his movement abruptly.

"come in" his voice magnetic but not too deep

The type that makes one curious about its owner.

The door slowly creaked open and a young man dressed in a police outfit walked in.

He saluted Stanley respectfully and he nodded in acknowledgement.

"what's the updat?" Stanley asked, his voice sounding lazy and carefree.

He sat up straight and dropped the pen he had in his hands on the desk, gazing inquisitively at the young police officer

The young man handed the file in his hands to Stanley who read all the information at a fast pace.

"I just got promoted yesterday and this is my very first case?" he asked rhetorically with a playful smirk.

"nice!" he dropped the file on the desk and looked up at the young officer.

"do you mind loosening up your face a little, I don't want to see such a stern face so early in the morning. Try smiling a little, please"

"yes sir"

A awkward and unsightly smile broke out on the young officer's face which made Stanley flinch in feigned fright and shock.

"oh my god!" he exclaimed, dramatically clutching his heart.

"I'd rather keep seeing that stoic face from earlier" he said humorously and the officer's face returned to its previous demeanor.

"any lead on the case?" he asked, exuding an authoritative aura as his face hardened up in a professional seriousness.

"not any as of yet sir"

"so the prime suspect is the victim's best friend, Angel Coker, an eighteen years old young lady"

"yes sir"

"the the camera was down at that moment?, what a dead end. Let's go and observe the crime sce" he said in all seriousness as he stood up.

He had a moderately burly figure which was manly and attractive, adding to his undeniable charm.

He left the office in huge yet determined strides.

If he failed to solve the case, he might get demoted.

The job was his life.

He'd rather die than get demoted.

He was going to give his all and be sure to solve the case no matter what.
