Chapter 10 - 10. The Last Keeper

The ancient hall of the Ruins of Talvalis felt heavier now, thick with dark magic and an eerie sense of foreboding. The air was cold, and the soft glow of the relic pulsed rhythmically, as if the orb itself was alive, feeding off the energy in the room. But it wasn't the relic that held Cendikia's attention, it was the keeper standing before them, cloaked in shadows, its presence radiating an overwhelming sense of power.

Elena shifted beside him, her twin blades at the ready, but Cendikia could feel her tension. She was a skilled fighter, but this was beyond her experience. This wasn't a simple foe they could cut down, this was an ancient force, one tied directly to the Forgotten Scholar's legacy. And Cendikia knew the system had led him here for a reason.

The keeper's voice rumbled again, echoing off the stone walls. "This place is not meant for the likes of you."

Cendikia's heart raced. He knew they were at a critical moment. The keeper wouldn't let them leave without a fight, and Cendikia wasn't sure how much strength he had left after the earlier battle with the corrupted creatures. His mana was dangerously low, and the system's punishment still weighed heavily on him.

"What do you protect?" Cendikia asked, his voice steady despite the fear gnawing at him. He needed to buy time to think, to find a way to approach this without depleting what little energy he had left.

The keeper's cold smile widened beneath its hood. "I guard the legacy of the Forgotten Scholar. Knowledge too dangerous for mortals to wield. You, who seek power through dark means, will not leave here alive."

Cendikia's mind raced. The relic or whatever it was clearly held immense power, but he couldn't simply overpower the keeper. He would need to outthink it, to use what little resources he had left wisely. But how?

Elena, always direct, stepped forward, her eyes narrowed. "You talk too much." She lunged at the keeper, her blades flashing in the dim light.

The keeper didn't move. Instead, with a wave of its hand, a barrier of dark magic appeared, deflecting Elena's strike. Her blades bounced off the shield, and she stumbled back, eyes wide with shock.

"You cannot fight what you do not understand," the keeper said, its voice filled with disdain.

Cendikia clenched his fists. Elena was strong, but raw strength wouldn't win this fight. He had to approach this differently.

"Status open," he whispered under his breath, needing to check his current standing one last time before deciding his next move.

Cendikia's mana was nearly gone, only a sliver remained. His forbidden rites were powerful but too dangerous to use with so little mana left. The arcane combat skill was still new to him, and while it offered a slight advantage, it wouldn't be enough to take down the keeper in a straight fight.

"Think, Cendikia. Use your mind, not just magic."

The keeper had protected this place for centuries, its power tied to the Forgotten Scholar's legacy. It was ancient, but everything had a weakness. And the relic at the center of the room, it was a source of immense power, likely tied to the very magic the keeper was using to guard the ruins.

A plan began to form in his mind, risky but his only shot.

"Elena," he said, his voice low and urgent. "Distract it. I need time."

She glanced at him, confused but willing to follow his lead. "Time for what?"

"Just trust me," he replied, already moving toward the center of the room, toward the relic.

Elena's eyes narrowed, but she nodded. With a shout, she charged the keeper again, her blades slashing in rapid, precise arcs. The keeper summoned another barrier, but this time, Elena was ready, darting around the shield and attacking from different angles, forcing the keeper to focus on her.

Cendikia moved quickly, staying low as he approached the pedestal. The orb's glow pulsed stronger as he neared, its dark energy thrumming through the air. He could feel its power radiating outward, feeding the magic that the keeper was using.

If I can disrupt the orb's magic, I can weaken the keeper.

But touching the relic directly would be dangerous. It was ancient magic, and one wrong move could result in a backlash that would kill him. He needed to find a way to manipulate its power without fully unleashing it.

His fingers brushed the grimoire tucked into his bag, and an idea sparked. He opened the book to the section on dimensional magic, recalling one of the spells he had skimmed earlier. It was a spell meant to interact with magical artifacts, allowing the caster to redirect or alter the flow of power within them.

It was risky, especially with his mana so low, but it was his best option.

He began the incantation, his voice barely a whisper as he spoke the ancient words. The runes from the grimoire glowed faintly, resonating with the energy of the relic. His mana drained further, the strain making his vision blur, but he pushed on.

Dark tendrils of magic extended from his hands, snaking toward the orb. The relic pulsed violently in response, its energy fighting against the spell. Cendikia gritted his teeth, forcing the magic to bend to his will.

The keeper, sensing the disruption, turned toward Cendikia, its eyes narrowing in fury. "You dare touch the relic?"

Before the keeper could move, Elena struck again, this time landing a hit that cracked the keeper's barrier. The keeper stumbled back, its focus divided between defending against Elena and stopping Cendikia's spell.

Cendikia poured the last of his mana into the incantation, the tendrils of dark magic wrapping around the orb, forcing the relic's energy to shift. The relic flickered, its glow faltering as Cendikia redirected the flow of power away from the keeper.

With a final shout, Cendikia completed the spell. The orb's light dimmed, and the room shuddered as the magic holding the keeper's strength faltered.

The keeper let out a howl of rage, its body trembling as the dark magic surrounding it began to unravel. Elena seized the opportunity, her blades flashing as she launched a final, devastating strike.

The keeper collapsed to the ground, its form disintegrating into wisps of dark smoke, the last remnants of its power fading into nothingness.

Cendikia fell to his knees, gasping for breath. His mana was gone, his body trembling from the effort of casting the spell. But they had won. The keeper was defeated, and the relic was now within his grasp.

Elena sheathed her blades, breathing heavily as she approached him.

"I don't know what you just did, but it worked."

Cendikia managed a weak smile. "I told you to trust me."

She huffed, but there was a hint of admiration in her eyes. "You're full of surprises, scholar."

With the keeper gone, the room was silent, the dark magic that had once filled the air now dissipated. Cendikia looked up at the relic, its glow faint but steady. This was the next step in unlocking the Forgotten Scholar's legacy, but he knew that claiming its power wouldn't come without risks.

As he reached out to take the relic, the system's voice chimed softly in his mind.

[Mission Complete:

Defeat the Keeper of Talvalis and claim the relic.]

[Reward:

Knowledge of the Forgotten Scholar's Power Unlocked.]

Cendikia's hand closed around the orb, and a surge of power rushed through him. The relic's energy flowed into his body, intertwining with the magic he had already unlocked from the grimoire. New knowledge flooded his mind... runes, incantations, secrets that had been lost for centuries.

But along with the power came a new warning from the system:

[Warning!!

The more you use the Forgotten Scholar's power, the closer you come to sharing their fate.]

Cendikia's breath caught in his throat. The Forgotten Scholar's fate, that he had been trying to uncover now loomed over him like a shadow. He had unlocked more power, but the cost was becoming clearer.

He stood slowly, the orb now pulsing faintly in his hand. "Let's go," he said quietly to Elena. "We've gotten what we came for."

Elena glanced at him, her expression thoughtful. "Are you sure you want to keep going down this path? That thing you're holding.. it's dangerous."

Cendikia met her gaze. "I know."

But there was no turning back now.
