Chapter 259 - Chapter 257: The Story of Mei Terumi 12

"So... what exactly are we looking for in this place?" I finally asked, my tone slightly quieter. My gaze turned to Aoki, anxiously waiting for a response that I couldn't quite understand where it was coming from.

Aoki turned, a small smile playing on his lips. "Looking for a place," Aoki said lightly.

"A place? What kind of place?" I asked again, now with furrowed brows.

Aoki didn't answer immediately. He paused for a moment, letting the sounds of the forest take over. Then Aoki's eyes met mine directly. "If you want to know, then you have to join me," Aoki said, "This is a secret. If you join, I will tell you."

"What?" I stared at Aoki with wide eyes. "Why should I join you just to know that place?"

"Then don't ask." Aoki turned away, continuing his steps, leaving me with a frustrated huff.

"Tsk, fine!" I turned my face away, but I couldn't help the warm blush that slowly spread across my cheeks. Not because of Aoki's answer. Not because of that place. But because I just realized—I wanted to know more... about Aoki.

We continued walking. The forest began to thicken, branches hanging like arms gently swaying in the wind.

We passed old trees with large roots jutting out like the bones of a dead dragon, a small cave echoing with the sound of water from an unseen source, and a hidden hole in the ground behind a large rock almost entirely swallowed by moss.

Aoki stopped at each of those places, observing the surroundings with sharp eyes. But each time, he shook his head slightly. "Not here," he murmured. "Not yet."

The sky began to change. The bright blue was replaced by a golden orange hue flowing from behind the treetops. Shadows grew longer, and the air began to cool.

The sound of birds gradually faded, replaced by the chirping of crickets rising from all directions. The sounds of nature shifted. The forest slowly transitioned from the world of day to the world of night—and we were still searching.

...

...

...

After hours of traversing the hills and seemingly endless thickets of forest, our steps began to slow. Dusty shoes, heavy breaths, and sweat trickling slowly down my temples.

The sun crept down, sneaking through the gaps in the trees and casting a golden hue on the leaves that trembled in the wind. The day felt long, as if time itself was reluctant to move forward.

Aoki stopped right at a narrow intersection bordered by tall cedar trees. Where Aoki stood still, his face was covered by the shadow of his tilted hat. Aoki's left hand gripped a small rope tied around his wrist, while his right hand was clenched gently.

His breath was deep, but not heavy—like someone silently swallowing disappointment. I looked at Aoki's upright yet weary back and knew: today's search had ended in vain.

"That's enough," Aoki finally murmured, his voice hoarse yet calm, like the sound of leaves rustling. "We should head back before night truly falls."

The sky began to darken. The orange and purple hues were slowly swallowed by the darkness, leaving the first brave star to reveal itself. Above, the sky stretched wide and silent, adorned with thin clouds floating gently like sheets of silk.

The night wind slipped between the tree trunks, carrying the scent of damp earth and old wood. The trees emitted a soft hissing sound, like the whispers of ancient spirits watching from behind the leaves.

As we reached the village gate, the light of a torch from afar welcomed our weary steps. Mr. Yachi stood tall, leaning on his spear with a face full of wrinkles and a cautious gaze.

Beside him, Mr. Zekai stood with his arms crossed, his sharp eyes devoid of reproach. They didn't say much, only exchanged glances with Aoki, then gave a brief nod—a kind of silent greeting for those who returned safely from the void.
