The tunnels beneath Ilya Valley were cold and dark at night-time.
For residences that were equipped with 24 hour access to electricity and underfloor heating, those who resided within the more affluent districts, additional sources of heat and light were unnecessary.
Yet, for those who lived within what could only be described as, the slum districts, the cramped living quarters were equipped with rudimentary sources of fire, connected to large, interconnected ventilation shafts that expelled harmful gases above the surface of the tunnels.
Beside the fireplace of one such residence there was a tight, narrow storage room designed to hold artificial coal and firelighters.
