Sophia had been in her room all day and had refused to go out. The silence of the house, the way she had been ignored, the cold look she got from Haisley pressed against her like a weight.
She stood at the window, watching Haisley walking with Aneira. Her gaze darkened. She grabbed her phone from the side when her phone vibrated. A smile appeared on her face.
Eventually, she changed into a better dress, smoothed it, and stepped out. Her heels clicked softly against the polished floor as she made her way down the hall. Her heart lifted when she saw Haisley coming from the opposite direction.
Maybe now.
Maybe she'll say something.
Maybe she'll just look at me.
But Haisley didn't stop. Her gaze was distant, her footsteps firm. She walked right past her, shoulders brushing lightly as if she were a stranger.
Sophia's breath caught. Her lips parted slightly, desperate to call her back, to explain again, but no words came.
