Chapter 477 - Chapter 478: Infiltration

Before infiltrating, Qing Ming had one more task to complete.

He stepped toward the Root ninja trapped in a genjutsu. Forming seals with his hands, he activated the Chakra Absorption Technique.

"Such a good source of resources... it shouldn't go to waste," he murmured softly.

Placing his palm on the chest of the Root ninja, he began extracting chakra. A stream of chakra flowed out from the ninja, entering Qing Ming's meridians, followed by mental and physical energy.

Even in his final moments, the Root ninja never awoke from the illusion.

This proved how devastatingly effective Qing Ming's genjutsu was, especially under the power of the Mangekyō Sharingan.

Placing the ninja's corpse beside another fallen Root member, Qing Ming formed seals again, this time using the Fire Release: Cremation Technique.

Boom!

Flames erupted on the bodies. As Qing Ming continued to feed chakra into the fire, the blaze grew stronger, eventually consuming the two corpses completely.

A breeze blew from the sea, scattering the ashes far and wide, erasing the last traces of their existence from the world.

Now, Qing Ming no longer needed to worry about anyone discovering anything unusual from their remains.

Shifting his gaze away, he began walking toward a specific spot in the forest, guided by the intelligence stored in his memory.

Soon, he arrived behind a low hill.

There, a cave entrance lay hidden in plain sight.

It appeared ordinary but was, in fact, the entrance to an underground base on Demon Island.

Besides this entrance, the base had another underwater passage. However, that route was both difficult to traverse and time-consuming, so Qing Ming naturally wouldn't choose it.

After observing the entrance for a moment, Qing Ming formed seals and cast the Shadow Clone Technique.

Poof!

A puff of chakra smoke dispersed, and a figure identical to Qing Ming appeared beside him.

They exchanged a glance and nodded to each other before forming seals simultaneously, casting Transformation Technique.

Qing Ming transformed into the recently subdued Root ninja whose memory he had read, codenamed Chi. The shadow clone took on the appearance of another Root member, codenamed Chuzake.

After carefully checking each other's appearances to ensure there were no flaws, they entered the cave one after the other.

At first, the passage was narrow, but as they ventured deeper, it widened, and the path began sloping downward.

Although Qing Ming had already seen this through Chi's memories, experiencing it firsthand brought a strange sense of both familiarity and unfamiliarity.

Remaining vigilant, Qing Ming and his clone pressed on.

Minutes later, they came across a cliff edge. Below it flowed a dark underground river.

Without hesitation, Qing Ming called to his shadow clone, gathering chakra at their feet as any ordinary ninja would, and descended along the cliff wall.

Moving upstream, they entered a cavern where a sizable underground pool awaited them.

The entrance to the base lay within the pool.

Wasting no time, Qing Ming and his shadow clone dove into the water, quickly locating a passage that led them into the base.

"Who goes there?"

As soon as they entered, two figures sprang out, brandishing kunai and shouting at them.

Qing Ming turned to look. The two were clad in ragged clothing, their exposed skin covered in fish-like scales.

"Experimental subjects..." Qing Ming mused inwardly.

Drawing on Chi's memories, he immediately recognized them. Just as he suspected, they were former experimental subjects, known only by their codenames.

"Number Seven, Number Eight, what are you doing here?" Qing Ming questioned, his tone sharp.

The two halted abruptly. Upon seeing Qing Ming and his clone's current forms, they quickly responded, "Chuzake-sama! Chi-sama! Lord Kazuhiko sent us to check on you since you hadn't returned for some time."

"Kazuhiko?"

Hearing the name, Qing Ming immediately recalled the base's current leader, Kimura Kazuhiko, a researcher affiliated with the Root organization.

According to Chi's memories, Kazuhiko was fanatically loyal to Danzo and a rather deranged individual.

At present, he was overseeing experiments in this base under Orochimaru's guidance.

As for Tenchi, he was currently only fifteen or sixteen years old—talented but not yet capable of standing on his own.

It wasn't until Orochimaru abandoned this base before his defection that Tenchi took full control.

But none of that concerned Qing Ming.

Right now, his only goal was to capture Kimura Kazuhiko and take control of the base.

With that thought, he turned to the two experimental subjects who now served as base guards and said coldly, "The issue has been resolved. The alarm is canceled!"

"Yes, Chi-sama!" the two responded in unison, not daring to question him.

Seeing their compliance, Qing Ming nodded and asked in a frosty tone, "Where is Kimura Kazuhiko right now?"

"He's in Laboratory Three, my lord," they replied simultaneously.

Qing Ming noticed their voices trembled slightly when mentioning Laboratory Three.

A moment's thought made the reason clear.

According to Chi's memories, Laboratory Three was the area designated for adult fusion experiments, the same place where these two had undergone their modifications.

It was only natural for them to carry some psychological scars from the ordeal.

Apart from Laboratory Three, the base had three other experimental zones.

Laboratory One dealt with embryonic fusion, Laboratory Two focused on infant fusion, and Laboratory Four conducted non-human fusion experiments.

Despite two years of war hardening him, Qing Ming couldn't suppress a wave of discomfort when recalling the scenes of those experiments.

"These insane scientists... they all deserve to die," Qing Ming muttered under his breath.

"What was that, Chuzake-sama?"

The two guards, unable to catch his words, asked in confusion.

"Nothing," Qing Ming replied, shaking his head.

Then, waving them off, he said, "You're dismissed."

"Yes, Chuzake-sama!" they replied and began to leave.

However, the moment they turned their backs, a sharp pain struck the back of their necks, and they fell unconscious.

Looking at the subdued pair, Qing Ming shook his head. "Without systematic training, even with power, they can't use a tenth of it."

By Qing Ming's estimate, the chakra reserves of these two experimental subjects were on par with the average Chūnin.

In theory, they shouldn't be weak.

But in reality, even an average Chūnin from any of the five great ninja villages could easily defeat them.

This was the result of possessing strength without knowing how to wield it.

Unless they were in water, where their amphibious abilities could give them an edge, their untrained power was barely enough to handle Genin-level opponents.

Kimura Kazuhiko likely made them base guards out of a "waste not, want not" mentality.

Still, the two had been diligent in their duties.

Since becoming guards, they not only faithfully executed their tasks but also occasionally acted as Kazuhiko's enforcers, capturing experimental subjects in his absence.

In essence, they had transitioned from victims to perpetrators.

For that, Qing Ming felt no obligation to show mercy.
