The rattling sound of the keyhole as Zade struggled to open it went unnoticed by the adults in the room who were both engrossed in their own business.
However, Kelsie's eyes happened to dart toward the door just as it was pushed open.
Instinctively, she shoved the man above her to the side, sending him to the floor whilst she hurriedly pulled the duvet to her chest.
The thud from him hitting the floor coincided with the sound of the door swinging fully open.
Thinking they were being sly, all three children slowly poked their heads in only to freeze at the sight of their mother staring straight into their souls.
"You said… she'd be in tears," Jesse muttered, rendered nearly speechless.
"My bad." Zade laughed nervously through clenched teeth.
Keira, however, had her attention on the shadow beside the bed.
The room was too dim for her mother to have a shadow… but even if it wasn't, a shadow wouldn't be moving unless her mom was, right? Right.
