The villagers must have been preparing for the upcoming festival. Iruka didn't pay much attention to it as he walked toward the academy, deciding that after a while he would head home.

But unknown to him, sitting on his desk at the academy was a forehead protector and a small farewell letter.

Meanwhile, Naruto Uzumaki had already packed up his belongings. If the people of Konoha didn't want him, then he had no reason to stay. This was his promise to himself and to everyone.

Standing atop the Hokage Monument, Naruto gazed down at the village. His eyes, usually full of energy, were now filled with pain and burning rage.

"If the village doesn't want me… then I don't want the village either," he muttered.

This was the story of Uzumaki Naruto.

And this was his vow—he would become the strongest shinobi the world had ever seen, a name that all would come to fear and respect.

With that fiery determination burning in his heart, Naruto turned away from Konoha and disappeared into the night.

As Naruto was walking slowly, his steps carrying him toward the Valley of the End. Ever since his battle with Sasuke, he had felt… different. Something was off. His senses seemed sharper, almost unnaturally so. He shook his head, refusing to dwell on it. Tch… I don't have some kind of kekkei genkai. That's impossible.

Still, he couldn't ignore the uneasy feeling. He could sense them—several shadows trailing him. They weren't exactly subtle.

Naruto finally came to a halt in a small clearing. Birds fluttered through the trees, the air seemingly calm. But Naruto's sharp blue eyes narrowed as he stared toward the treeline.

"Hmph… you might fool a normal person," he said aloud, "but I already know you're there. Why don't you come out?"

The masked Root ANBU emerged from the shadows, landing silently in front of him. Even though they were surprised at his perception, their faces showed nothing. Root operatives didn't have the luxury of emotion.

One of them, clearly the captain, stepped forward. His voice was cold, almost mechanical.

"Jinchūriki. Lord Danzō has ordered your return to the village. You will serve your proper purpose as a weapon for Konoha."

Naruto scoffed, his lips curling into a bitter smile. The image of the bandaged old man flashed in his mind—eyes that had once looked at him like he was nothing more than a tool.

"Tch… so that's it, huh? Konoha's loyal dogs, sent after me. Wasn't it enough that the village beat me down for years? Wasn't it enough that they banished me? And now they want to drag me back to use me as a weapon?"

The Root captain didn't flinch. "Uzumaki Naruto. You have been ordered. Come with us peacefully. Refusal will result in force."

Naruto's expression darkened, and then he smirked. "Heh… use force, huh? You Root guys really don't get it. I've got a long history with ANBU. If the loyal ANBU of the Third Hokage couldn't stop me back when I painted their headquarters pink and orange…" Naruto's grin widened, eyes gleaming with defiance, "…what makes you think you can?"

Naruto smirked as the ROOT operatives silently unsheathed their weapons.

"Huh… so you really think you can capture me? Let's see you try," he said with his usual defiant grin.

The ROOT captain gave a hand signal, and the masked shinobi charged forward. But before they could reach him, Naruto slammed his hands together.

"Shadow Clone Jutsu!"

With a burst of smoke, nearly two thousand shadow clones filled the clearing, spreading out like a swarm of ants. The ROOT members froze for a moment, clearly taken aback—even if they didn't show emotions.

Naruto chuckled. "Heh, what's the matter? Don't tell me the 'elite' ROOT can't even handle a few thousand Narutos?"

The clones quickly split into squads, darting off in every direction. Without Byakugan or sensory abilities, the ROOT couldn't tell which was the real one. They scattered to pursue the clones, leaving the original behind.

A few minutes later, a plain-looking rock near a tree gave off a puff of smoke, revealing Naruto in his original form.

"Tch, figures. Couldn't even tell the difference between a rock and a Transformation Jutsu. Pretty elite, huh?" Naruto muttered sarcastically.

He glanced at the sky and smirked again. "Guess my little decoys will keep 'em busy for a while."

Sure enough, in the distance, one of his clones was forced into combat, dodging a fireball jutsu from a ROOT operative. Naruto made a mental note. Good… if I remember what the clones learn, this might come in handy later.

For now, though, he decided to keep moving. He turned and headed in the opposite direction from where most of the clones had gone, heading toward the mountains.

Meanwhile, back with the clones, chaos erupted. The ROOT members had formed defensive lines, expecting explosive tags or deadly jutsu. Instead, to their shock, Naruto's clones pulled out scrolls filled with… paint balloons.

Pink and orange balloons soared through the air, splattering ROOT operatives left and right.

Splaaat!

The ROOT didn't show expressions, but there was no mistaking the awkward pause in their movements. Even the most emotionless mask couldn't hide the absurdity of the situation.

Naruto's laughter echoed faintly through the clones. "Hahaha! Guess I just taught ROOT their first lesson in emotions—embarrassment!"

Back with the real Naruto, he walked quietly toward a secluded area near the mountains. Few shinobi ever came here—the terrain was rough, and on the other side was nothing but ocean. For Naruto, though, that made it perfect.

"Alright," he muttered, hands behind his head as he strolled casually, "if they wanna play chase-the-jinchūriki, let's see how long they can keep up."

Naruto continued walking along the quiet path, the sea breeze coming from the ocean-side cliffs. Hardly any shinobi bothered to travel this way; the area was remote, and beyond the mountains lay nothing but endless waves.

As Naruto wandered further, lost in his own thoughts, he accidentally bumped into an old man.

"Ah—sorry, old man. I wasn't paying attention," Naruto said, scratching the back of his head awkwardly.

The old man studied him for a moment, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Hmm… you're a shinobi, aren't you, young one?"

Naruto looked away with a small frown. "Well… a former shinobi, I guess you could say."

The old man's gaze softened. "I see. Sounds like life hasn't been too kind to you."

Before Naruto could reply, his stomach growled loudly. His cheeks turned red with embarrassment.

"Pffft—ha ha ha!" The old man chuckled heartily. "Well then, come on. You look like you could use a meal. My restaurant's just around the corner. How about some noodles?"

Naruto blinked in surprise but quickly smiled. "Heh… guess I can't say no to that."

A few minutes later, Naruto was seated inside the small restaurant, happily slurping down a steaming bowl of ramen. To him, ramen wasn't just food—it was comfort, a little piece of happiness no matter where he was.

"Man, this hits the spot…" Naruto said with a grin between bites.

The old man, wiping down the counter, smiled. "So, young one… you must be wondering why this town feels so empty."

Naruto glanced around, realizing he hadn't seen many people since arriving. He raised an eyebrow. "Yeah… it's kinda strange. What's going on here?"

The old man's tone grew quieter, almost serious. "It's because of the next town over… just past those two mountains. Hardly anyone dares to live there anymore."

Naruto tilted his head, curious. "Why's that?"

The old man leaned closer, lowering his voice. "They say it's haunted."

Naruto stiffened slightly, his chopsticks pausing in mid-air. "H-Haunted? Ghosts, huh…" He forced a laugh, waving it off. "Tch, like I'd be scared of something like that. I'm a shinobi, believe it!"

But inside, Naruto's heart skipped a beat. Ghosts… man, I really hope it's not what I'm thinking…
