Chapter 5 - Rumors and Rivalries

Yun Lan sat at the breakfast table, but the food in front of him was untouched. His thoughts drifted back to the conversation with Lady Yun Fei the night before. The revelation about his birth parents, their connection to the Li family, and the mystery surrounding their deaths gnawed at him like a relentless shadow. He couldn't shake the feeling that Li Zhi held the key to unlocking the full truth.

The clatter of porcelain snapped him back to reality. Lady Yun Fei glanced at him from across the table, her brow furrowed in concern.

"You've barely eaten a thing," she remarked, her voice gentle but firm. "You need to keep your strength up, Lan. Especially now."

Yun Lan forced a small smile, picking up his chopsticks with little enthusiasm. "I'm fine. Just... thinking."

"I know this is a lot to take in," she said, her eyes softening. "But you must remain focused. The court is a dangerous place, and you're bound to attract attention—especially after that duel with Li Zhi."

At the mention of his name, Yun Lan felt a tightening in his chest. He had so many questions, but he knew that now wasn't the time to press for more. The political game they were playing required patience, and he couldn't afford to be reckless.

Before he could respond, a soft knock at the door interrupted them. A servant entered and bowed low. "My lady, young master," he said respectfully. "You have a visitor."

"Who is it?" Lady Yun Fei asked, her tone calm but curious.

The servant hesitated, glancing briefly at Yun Lan before answering. "It is Lord Zhang Wei. He wishes to speak with young master Yun Lan."

Yun Lan's brows rose in surprise. Zhang Wei was one of his closest friends, but it wasn't like him to show up unannounced.

"Show him in," Lady Yun Fei instructed.

A moment later, Zhang Wei strode into the room, his expression serious yet tinged with mischief, as always. His easy grin faltered when he saw the tension in Yun Lan's posture.

"Lan," Zhang greeted, bowing slightly to Lady Yun Fei before turning to his friend. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything."

"No, not at all," Yun Lan said, rising from his seat. "Is something wrong?"

Zhang's grin returned, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Let's just say there's something you need to hear—something the nobles have been whispering about."

Lady Yun Fei stood gracefully, sensing the need for privacy. "I'll leave you two to talk. Remember what I said, Lan. Stay vigilant."

As she left the room, Zhang's playful demeanor faded entirely, replaced by a look of concern. He motioned for Yun Lan to sit back down before taking a seat himself.

"You won't believe what I heard at court this morning," Zhang began, leaning forward. "After the royal gathering and your duel with Li Zhi, people are starting to talk. And not just about your skills."

Yun Lan frowned, his unease growing. "What are they saying?"

"They're saying you and Li Zhi are more than just rivals," Zhang replied, his voice low. "Rumors are flying around that your families' feud is deeper than anyone realized. Some are even speculating that you two might be... connected."

Yun Lan's heart skipped a beat. Could the court already be picking up on the truth? The secret about his birth parents wasn't supposed to be common knowledge, yet here were whispers that hinted at it.

"Connected how?" Yun Lan asked, his voice steady despite the turmoil inside.

Zhang shrugged, though his gaze was sharp. "Some say it's a family secret. Others think it's personal. They're watching your every move, Lan. After that duel, the tension between you and Li Zhi wasn't lost on anyone. Some think it's just rivalry, but others... well, they think there's something more going on between you two."

Yun Lan's stomach twisted. "Something more?"

Zhang's lips curved into a smirk, though it lacked its usual warmth. "You know how the court loves to gossip. They're speculating about everything from old family grudges to... romantic entanglements."

The words hung in the air like a storm cloud. Yun Lan's mind reeled at the implication. Romantic entanglements? Was the court really so eager to twist every interaction into some sordid tale of passion and rivalry?

"I don't care what they say," Yun Lan muttered, though the weight of the rumors pressed down on him. "They don't know anything."

Zhang's grin faded, and his expression became serious again. "Maybe not. But you should still be careful. The Li family is powerful, and if these rumors spread, they might use them against you. You've already made an impression at court, but not all attention is good attention."

Yun Lan clenched his fists, frustration bubbling up inside him. Everything was happening too fast. The duel, the revelation about his past, and now these rumors that could throw his entire life into chaos.

"I didn't ask for any of this," he said quietly, more to himself than to Zhang.

"I know," Zhang replied softly. "But you're in the thick of it now, whether you like it or not. You're part of the game, Lan, and you need to play it wisely."

Yun Lan took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. He couldn't let the rumors distract him from his goal. There were more important things at stake—his parents' legacy, the secrets of his past, and the growing tension with Li Zhi.

"I won't let them get to me," Yun Lan said, his resolve hardening. "I'll find out the truth about my parents, and I won't let anyone—least of all Li Zhi—stand in my way."

Zhang nodded, his expression approving. "That's the spirit. But just remember—you don't have to face this alone. I've got your back."

Yun Lan managed a small smile, grateful for Zhang's loyalty. "Thank you, Wei."

Zhang stood, clapping Yun Lan on the shoulder. "Anytime, brother. Just be careful. The court is watching, and the Li family... well, they're not the forgiving type."

As Zhang left, Yun Lan's thoughts returned to Li Zhi. The rumors swirling around them felt like a tangled web, and Yun Lan knew he couldn't ignore the tension between them any longer. Whether it was rivalry, attraction, or something deeper, their connection was undeniable—and dangerous.

Yun Lan rose from his seat and gazed out the window, the imperial city stretching out before him. He had come here seeking answers, but all he had found were more questions.

And somehow, he knew that all of those questions would lead back to Li Zhi.
