My breath hitched as I turned slowly to face him. He flashed a smile, and I blinked twice. This had to be a nightmare.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, exhaling slowly to keep my voice steady. What if he just came to Paris for a vacation? His company was doing well, after all.

"I came to see you," he said, words striking me like a blow. "And of course, my daughter."

"You mean the thing you wanted me to get rid of?" I blurted, and he pressed his lips into a thin line.

"I made a mistake back then, and I'm sorry, as I said. Our daughter's sick, and you didn't care to tell me. I'm not that low—"

I scoffed. "Alan, you are a billion feet under the ground. You're the very definition of low. Stop following me and get a life."

The elevator beeped as I stepped out, trying to calm my racing heart, but he tightened his grip around my arm, his eyes darkening as he stared at me intently.

"Let's talk outside."
