Chapter 18 - The Battle of Mondstadt

"Frisk, Chara… We're here."

Ventus spoke as if in front of them was the storm barrier. The two Dreemurrs could only stare at the barrier that surrounded the city. Frisk looks at the ground momentarily before turning to Istaroth standing next to them. Nightfall was already here hours ago, now it was midnight. But for some reason, it felt like the hours went by quickly.

Neither twin said anything, but Chara did speak first, to Istaroth.

"Hide their blessings."

Istaroth didn't say anything, but waved her hand as a phantom clock appeared in front of her as it ticked backwards. Small clocks soon appear on everyone's wrists, each ticking backwards. One by one, everyone felt like they had something once in their bodies, felt like it was taken away. But it was still there.

"Okay, we do it the same way we did when we were here last time. Everyone enters one by one, we'll follow as soon as the last person goes."

With that, everyone did so, and this time with more determination as it went quicker, even if there were more people this time.

Frisk watches as people go through the barrier, until the last three, Gunnhildr, Venerare, and Amos. Amos was waiting for a reason, for either Frisk or Chara to teleport her through so that she wouldn't get detected by Decarabian. As for the other two…

Both of them glance at the Dreemurrs before entering. Frisk and Chara watched as nobody said anything, until…

"Uh, Frisk? Chara?"

Both of them snapped out of it as Amos was poking their cheeks, it seems they were lost in their thoughts more than they should have.

"Sorry."

"My apologies."

Both of them looked at each other as Frisk nodded to Chara, and they understood. Both of them switch their half-SOULs to Patience as both of them teleported through the barrier with Amos going with Chara. Once the three of them got through they were met with everyone's gaze, awaiting their next step.

Frisk began to speak.

"Okay, everyone scatters around the city, finds anyone who is still asleep or somewhat awake, and gets them to safety. We don't want anybody staying here for the big battle. Once you do so, meet up, and find any safe spots to attack from. We'll try to ensure that you all can land your attacks without Decarabian hurting any of you."

Everyone nodded, each of them knew the risk as they were mortals, but they had the blessing of Barbatos and their strongest allies.

"If anyone is injured, make sure their injuries are taken care of. Use any means necessary to take down the God of Storms. We can do this, everyone. You all made it here not just by your courage and bravery, but also by your determination, which kept you all going. It is time to put that determination to the test. This land will be free!"

A silent cheer followed as everyone broke into groups, each of them determined to end this overdue war. The strongest group stayed in one place as they had one last meeting.

"You have more to say don't you?"

Ventus spoke as Chara nodded as they quickly explained.

"We both thought about it more, and we decided it would be best if every one of you went with the other groups to ensure that the plan goes accordingly. But that doesn't mean the plan Frisk spoke of will be different; we will make sure you all have the chance to attack while we fight Decarabian. He is a god and we both did somewhat fight a god.

Plus, we will have Istaroth with us, so if everything goes perfectly, then the only casualty is the God of Storms. Nobody is dying on our watch."

Istaroth gives a glance to Chara, Ventus, and Amos. But she didn't say anything, but that didn't mean Ventus noticed her glance.

"Do you mind if we both go with you? There are a few people who are guarding the tower of the God of Storms. The people there have those positions out of fear as they were picked by Decarabian himself."

Chara didn't consider it as they only thought the storm barrier was this city's only defense. Then again, what kind of city doesn't have people guarding important places? Still, Chara nodded as Gunnhildr and Venerare would stay with them. Ventus, Amos, and Scharlach went their own ways to support other groups.

The group of five immediately began their way to the tower of the city. Frisk couldn't help but look at Gunnhildr, remembering what she said. But the moment they look at her, she too looks at Frisk. Both stare at each other for a second before looking back forward. Both of them knew right now wasn't the time to get caught up in the confession that happened hours ago.

Soon the five of them reach the entrance of the tower as the guards guarding the entrance look at the group with surprise expressions. Gunnhildr and Venerare immediately informed them of what would happen and why they were here. The guards didn't need to be told twice, they moved out of the way as Frisk, Chara, and Istaroth entered the tower.

"Good luck, both of you."

Chara said to the two women as both of them nodded as they said the same to them and Frisk. It seems word spreads faster as there are more guards, but each and every one of them stops or questions the three. In fact, every guard went ahead and aided whoever was still inside the tower, but did not inform the God of Storms.

"Sheesh. Just being informed of a rebellion really makes everyone immediately join our side instead of their own god."

"Chara, you know this rebellion was going to happen sooner or later. I'm just surprised it lasted this long."

The two Dreemurrs spoke to each other as they were halfway up the tower. Istaroth just glanced as the moving guards helped evacuate everyone. She sighs at Decarabian's incompetence in truly guiding humanity. She shook her head as she raised her arms.

"Istaroth?"

"Just giving you both an extra boost of my blessing. This won't be like Boreas so you will need my help."

Frisk nodded as Chara kept on going without them, the two quickly caught up to them as they soon reached the door that led to the top of the tower. Istaroth quietly spoke to the two of them.

"Ready?"

"For this to end once and for all!"

Chara declared as they opened the door, and not a second later a powerful storm attack was launched towards the three. They quickly teleported out of the attack range as Frisk and Chara launched their determined strikes.

"That was too close!"

"You think!?"

Before the two could bicker even further, despite it being a way to clear the tension, another attack came from the God of Storms as the two dodged them. They quickly change to their Teleport Mode to ensure dodging would be quicker.

"Hey, God of Storms! You seem to be under the weather!"

Frisk punned as they smiled at their own god, Decarabian on the other hand, wasn't as amused. In fact, he has a scowl on his face.

"Insolence! You outsiders dare to invade my city!"

The god shouted as powerful hurricanes aimed directly at Frisk, they quickly teleported away as more and more powerful hurricanes were coming at them. Frisk gives a quick look at Chara as they understand that they should attack Decarabian while he's distracted. Chara quickly teleported beside Decarabian and instantly attacked with a stab then slashes.

"Tsk! You dare—"

"Float! Force Slam!"

Decarabian was immediately launched into the air, but it was brought back down with brute force, and it was like Chara didn't even touch him at all. Chara took the advantage as they delivered more slashes or stabs on Decarabian as he launched Chara up in the air!

Decarabian wanted so much to finish off Chara while they were up in the air, but an unexpected slash suddenly struck him. He saw Frisk with their hand on fire and their sword glowing red as they launched their elemental attack.

"Tornado Strike!"

A flaming tornado formed as another slash was made, but with the mix of Pyro with Anemo, Decarabian never thought he would face such opponents. And now that he had thought about it, his enemy Boreas was supposed to attack the barrier weeks ago. Did those two do something to him?

"Anemo Sphere!"

Chara shouted from above as a wind sphere was launched out of their hand and came into contact with Frisk's flaming attack. It was doing extra damage to Decarabian as he instantly knew that these two were more dangerous than they seemed.

He then noticed his city, he was seeing his people being dragged by groups of people, kidnapping them. He noticed the group was his own people. But that was his own perspective. Still, he would not believe his own people would do this; he had to do something. He uses his Anemo element to create a few more hurricanes to deal with Frisk and Chara before flying off to assist his people.

But before he could leave his tower, his path was blocked by a barrier with a clock symbol; the hour and minute hands were not moving.

"So sorry, but I cannot allow you to leave."

A soft voice spoke out to Decarabian. He tried to find the source of the voice, but found no one, other than the two dodging the hurricanes. He attempted to force his way through the mysterious barrier, but to his shock, it was more powerful than his storm barrier. He growls as he goes back to attacking Frisk and Chara as they both manage to teleport away from the hurricanes.

"Time Stop! Icicle Shot!"

"Hurricane Blade! Icicle Shot!"

Frisk stops Decarabian in his tracks before unleashing a sharp icicle, which hits him, causing Cryo damage, as Chara launches his attack similarly to how Frisk did. They also did the Cryo spell as it made a reaction of both Pyro and Cryo that caused even more damage.

"Okay, let– Whoa!"

Frisk dodged as an arrow was shot, and it hit Decarabian. They turned to see where it came from, and they saw Amos and Ventus, both of them on top of a pillar, loading another arrow into her bow. Frisk was amazed at how much accuracy she had to shoot from that spot.

They soon see other bow users unleashing their arrows at their god, as Chara notices what is happening, and they move out of the way. The two even saw a huge crowd making their way to the tower, it seems the evacuation was successful. The rebellion was on its way to the top.

"Frisk!"

"Chara!"

Both of them turned to see Gunnhildr and Venerare, along with Scharlach, had reached the top of the tower. Chara immediately put the stop spell to ensure Decarabian stayed frozen as they greeted the three.

"Attack while he is frozen!"

The three nodded as they unleashed everything they had. Frisk and Chara had to use Time Stop the moment Decarabian was about to break free of the spell. Hit after hit, he looks like he isn't going to last much longer, then again, their system wasn't working, so who knows where his HP bar is at.

Frisk felt they were running out of SOUL power as Chara felt the same. So with a quick glance at each other, they saved up their remaining power as the spell was about to wear off, but Chara did have enough SOUL power to use two spells to spare before saving it up.

"Paralyze!"

They cast the stunning spell on Decaraian as he was only paralyzed for a second. Decarabian flew towards both of them as a storm began to surround him. It was like a miniaturized version of the barrier blocking the city but for himself. It began shooting out Anemo attacks. Frisk turned to the three.

"Get back down there now!"

"Elemental Reflect!"

Chara put up a defensive barrier as the attacks in their direction were instantly shot back to Decarabian, but the small barrier blocked the return attacks. Even the arrows launched by every bow user weren't getting through. Gunnhildr, Venerare, and Scharlach made it back safely as they waited.

Chara glances at the area as they see powerful winds affecting everything from the small storm barrier. They can even see Istaroth keep the storms from escaping the tower, but a bit of wind was getting out. Chara wondered how to get through that barrier as they can teleport, but they had another idea.

"Frisk! Time to test our Wind Gliders!"

"Now!? We haven't tested them yet!"

Chara nodded and ignored the warning as they got close to Frisk as it was enough to open their menu and somewhat manage to take out a pair of mechanic wings. They give Frisk the white version, as Chara puts on the black version. As they activate their fire magic, it engulfs both of their hands.

They then cast Float on themselves as they activate their Wind Glider, as the storm, as they were flying for the first time. Chara did their best not to slam themselves into Istaroth's barrier as they quickly managed to get the hang of it, and began circling around the storm barrier.

"Oh! I see what you're doing!"

Frisk did the same as they activated their Wind Glider, and unlike Chara, Frisk got a bit of experience flying, or in their opinion, gliding during their fight with Asriel. Still, Frisk knew what Chara had in the idea. Flying in a circle while having fire as it can get absorbed with the storm that can cause major damage to Decarabian.

They swung in a circle at a normal speed, but with the wind currents seemingly going faster, so did they. Soon Frisk and Chara made a ring of flaming fire, and as it got absorbed by the storm, it created a huge burst of flame as if they were first-hand witnessing an uncontrollable forest fire. It cost their remaining SOUL power.

Frisk and Chara flew up in the air to avoid being caught by the Pyro damage and suffocated by the smoke that was quickly spreading. It was making a huge smoke screen as the two had to get away from the smoke.

But thankfully, Istaroth quickly blocks the smoke from reaching the two as she checks her powers.

"Frisk! Chara! Get rid of the smoke now!"

She shouted as she was trying to hold back the smoke from spreading as the two realized why. They saw Decarabian trying to unleash the smoke by adding more wind in the area as it was leaking. Both instantly knew the danger of smoke, but they had to wait for their magic to recharge.

"Enough! This outrageous attack will end along with these traitors!"

Suddenly, Decarabian decided to unleash everything as countless attacks were hitting the barrier at once. Istaroth had to put in half of her powers to not let a single attack out. Frisk and Chara quickly get out of Istaroth's barrier as they witness the attacks.

They saw that some of the attacks were able to pass through the barrier, as it was a smoky arrow, and it was being shot in any direction. One of them was aiming directly at either Amos or Ventus.

"Damn it! Istaroth keeps him trapped there, we have to warn everyone! Frisk you warn the army! I'll warn our bow users!"

"Got it!"

Istaroth only nodded as she realized the situation she had put herself in, and she used all of her power to ensure nothing went wrong. But it was still weren't enough as the attack only got more dangerous. Frisk and Chara separate, not before warning Gunnhildr, Venerare, and Scharlach about the danger as everyone spreads once more, with the three getting away from the danger.

One by one, the arrows were being shot out at a dangerous speed. Chara barely managed to dodge them as they had their Teleport Mode on whenever an arrow was too close. They saw Ventus helping Amos get back down to the ground. Chara dodges another arrow as they realize where it was aiming.

"Amos watch out!"

She noticed the arrow as she moved out of the way as she was hanging on. But suddenly another arrow struck her chest, causing her to cry out in agony as she fell.

"AMOS!"

Ventus shouted as he prepared to catch her but a third arrow hit Ventus as he fell too.

"VENTUS! AMOS!"

Chara cried out as they barely made it, catching both of them in time. They quickly got them to a safe spot as they checked the wounds.

"This is going to hurt but please bear with it!"

With no hesitation, Chara ripped out the arrows from both of them as they screamed, but Chara quickly put out bandages from their pocket as they wrapped their injuries.

"You both need to get help! Hey! You all, help me with them! Get them out of here and treat their injuries!"

Other bow users nodded as two people carried Ventus, and the other two carried Amos. Chara saw two more arrows being launched at them as they quickly blocked the incoming attacks. Did Decarabian sense his lover having an affair or something that caused him to attack both of them?

"I'll hold back the attacks to make sure they both get to safety."

They block a few more, as they wonder how Frisk was doing with the arrows. Knowing his friends would be alright for now Chara decided to head back in case Frisk needed help.

Meanwhile with Frisk.

"Get inside! Stay there until we clear the situation! This doesn't look like it's going to end anytime soon!"

They mutter the last part as they reflect, deflect, parry, or dodge the arrows. It was getting outrageous that most of them were trying to hit them. They wonder how long it was going to last until they notice Chara speeding towards them.

"Chara! We need to—"

"Medical team! We need a few of you to head in that direction! We got two injured people who needed proper care!"

Chara spoke as they took out the Empty Gun, as it was filled with rock pebbles, and they pulled the trigger three times to break through three arrows. They quickly reloaded as they watched carefully for other arrows. Frisk looked as they saw a small medical team head off as another arrow was launched out to hit one of them.

But Chara shot the pebbles towards the arrows into oblivion as Frisk made sure the medical team got through safety as they saw who needed them. Frisk was horrified as they saw the smoke coming out of their bandage injuries.

"Are they going to be okay!?"

"I pray to both Barbatos and Istaroth that they do unless you can manage to cure the smoke that is coming out of them!"

Frisk tried to think of ways but they… Don't… Wait. Frisk immediately made sure the medic team reached Ventus and Amos before flying towards them, not before dragging Chara with them.

"Frisk! What—"

"We can use our determination to help!"

Chara realized what Frisk was thinking and after they checked to see if everyone else was safe, which they are for now, they flew towards their two friends. It pained the Dreemurrs to see them in such a state, and they both quickly got close to them. Frisk check with one of the medics

"How are they?"

"Not good, the injury they received was from a god, treating it seems very impossible to heal. Even with the medicine put on I don't think it will remove the effects it is showing."

Frisk grabbed Chara's hand and, with no hesitation, both of them concentrated on using their determination to focus on the wounds. As if the two half-SOULs were attempting to fuse together, it let out a burst of red energy as it made its way to Ventus and Amos. It poured into the cuts as the determination was healing them.

The smoke that was lingering was now being extinguished completely. The wounds were now healing, and a red glow was showing the spots where they were hurt. Their groans of agony were now gone. Frisk and Chara sigh in relief, not before feeling like something was wrong.

An explosion was heard as it came from the tower itself; the tower was crumbling, and the walls were broken as it was somehow still standing. Frisk and Chara immediately flew back to the tower as what they saw horrified them both. Everyone had an arrow on their arms, legs, but for Gunnhildr and Venerare, it was directly in their stomachs.

And it had more arrows than the rest, the two Dreemurrs frozen, before Frisk opened their eyes turning pure red along with Chara. The white star in Frisk's eyes now turns black. Both of them glared at the still ongoing smoke storm, more at Decarabian, as if they were looking directly at him. The smoky storm was beginning to fade as it quickly became clearer at the top.

"End this! Now!"

"Agree!"

The two then flew off again as they used the convenient wind currents to get back up, Chara wasted no time in firing six shots, while Frisk took out their phone to activate Shooter Mode and shoot out projectiles.

Each of the shots nearly managed to hit Decarabian, as he was able to block all of them. But lucky for the two, their SOUL power was restored.

"Time Stop!"

Both of them shouted as Decarabian was frozen again, and both of them tried their attacks again with the double combo, dealing major damage. Seeing the God of Storms in his weakest, Frisk and Chara decided it was time to deal the final blow.

But before they could have done anything, a burst of powerful wind suddenly appeared behind them. The two look behind to see… Barbatos gathers a humongous amount of Anemo energy. Frisk and Chara realized Barbatos was not fooling around, or was already pissed off the moment Ventus was hurt.

Frisk looked below, and saw everyone, even the ones who were hurt were praying to Barbatos and to them and Chara. But Barbatos was receiving all the prayers as it was… Empowering him.

"As of this day forward, the Wind Spirit, Barbatos, will now be the Anemo Archon this nation needs. Give your people the freedom they are all willing to risk their lives for. Give them what they want, God of Freedom."

Istaroth's voice echoed as Chara turned as they no longer felt Istaroth's presence. Her barrier was gone, and all that was left was the frozen Decarabian. Chara was then pulled away from Frisk as they felt a powerful attack was just ready to be used by Barbatos. Chara and Barbatos share a look before Chara nods at him and glides towards the army with Frisk to heal everyone with their determination.

Barbatos closed his eyes as he summoned all of the power that he gathered from everyone's prayers. A glowing chess piece that was the queen piece came to him as a burst of wind was launched towards Decarabian. Wind after wind, it was like Barbatos was sending out a thousand winds to make the final attack blow of this whole battle.

Soon… Everything just stopped, the winds were no longer breezing, no one moved, but Frisk, Chara, and Barbatos were still moving. Barbatos floated towards the fallen God of Storms. Damage was everywhere on him, it was obvious he wasn't going to last much longer.

"My people… I protected them, only to fail… I hope they won't forget me."

Barbatos just looks him directly in the eyes. He then spoke to Decarabian.

"They feared you. They only worship you because of your tyranny over this city. If you truly cared for them then you shouldn't have caused destruction in your city. Attack the people of the city that you called traitors. Your delusion and lack of understanding of humanity made you believe you were doing the right thing."

Barbatos spoke the words of truth to the God of Storms, whether he believed it or not was not what he was thinking. What was on his mind was that Barbatos' voice sounded like the one when he was trapped at his own tower.

Decarabian thought the wind spirit was the reason he lost. Why couldn't he help his people? He glared at Barbatos one last time before he became completely still. His body faded away into particles. The moment he did, time felt like it was moving again. Everything slowly became calmer, everything was moving forward.

The storm barrier that covers the entire city has now begun to fade. Showing that the ruler of Mondstadt was now dead. The supposed night sky suddenly had the sun begin to rise. It was like this whole fight, cost the entire night, yet it felt like an hour or so. It was so strange but then again. It felt like hours like battles that seemed endless.

"Barbatos, the Anemo Divine Throne is now yours, Anemo Archon. Lead humanity to their future."

Istaroth's voice echoed one last time as Barbatos just floated with the strange chess piece. He then floated down to see everyone recovering from that last unexpected attack. The arrows and injuries that were there were now gone. Barbatos went to Ventus' side as he gently patted him.

Ventus smiled seeing his friend, he couldn't help but speak.

"Should I still call you just Barbatos or Lord Barbatos?"

This got Amos to chuckle lightly as Barbatos just let out a breath. He glanced at Frisk and Chara, who now had relieved looks as it seemed Gunnhildr and Venerare were going to be alright. Both of them looked at Barbatos as they smiled, Barbatos cheered.

Then, as if by instinct, everyone looked towards the sky, seeing the sun filling up the blue sky. For the first time, the future will soon look bright for all of Mondstadt.
