"You should be sitting here," she murmured, her voice barely audible in the empty office, speaking to a man who couldn't hear her. "Not me. You. This is your chair, your desk, your empire. You should be here arguing with me about strategy, telling me I'm being too ruthless, too aggressive. Smiling at me with that knowing look you get, like you already know I'll win the argument anyway but you enjoy watching me fight for it."
The room offered no answer. Just the hum of electronics and the distant sound of the city waking up beyond the windows.
The silence pressed against her, heavy and suffocating.
