Chapter 11 - Chapter Nine: The Boxes Arrived Before Breakfast

Neverland Ranch, Los Olivos, California

November 26th, 1991 — 6:08 a.m.

The boxes arrived before breakfast.

This was considered rude by everyone except the boxes, which had no manners and considerable confidence. They came stacked in the back of a delivery van, sealed with tape, labelled with codes and quantities, smelling faintly of cardboard, ink, and the cold outside air. Dangerous sat inside them by the dozen: compact discs, cassettes, promotional copies, carefully wrapped vinyl, posters rolled into tubes, press materials, photographs chosen by committees and then worried over by other committees.

Julian watched from Michael's arms as the first carton came through the side entrance.

He was not supposed to be awake yet. This had been explained to him by Lisa at 5:41 a.m. with the patient fury of a woman who had slept in three separate pieces. Julian had listened respectfully and then continued being awake. His body, nineteen months old and convinced dawn was a personal invitation, had won.

Michael held him against one hip, one hand secure beneath him, the other signing for the delivery because ordinary domestic life occasionally required the King of Pop to initial a clipboard in socks.

"This all of it?" Bill asked.

The driver looked at the stack. "For this address, yes. There are more at the office."

"Of course there are," Lisa said behind them.

She stood in the doorway wrapped in a robe, hair loose, eyes narrowed at the boxes like they had personally disturbed her child. Behind her, Riley and Benjamin peered around each side of her legs.

"Are those presents?" Benjamin asked.

"No," Lisa said.

"They look like presents."

"They are your father's work."

Riley considered the distinction. "Work can be presents."

Michael looked over his shoulder. "That's true."

Lisa pointed at him. "Do not help them unionise."

Julian made a small sound into Michael's shirt.

He knew this one.

The world was about to put its hands on his father again.

Then the box nearest the door tilted slightly, and his entire attention shifted to whether it might fall. This was the mercy of being small: history arrived, and gravity immediately interrupted.

Bill steadied the carton.

"Careful," Michael said.

The word came out sharper than he meant it to.

Everyone heard that too.

The driver froze. Bill's hand stayed on the box. Lisa's face changed by half a degree. Riley looked at the carton with new suspicion, as though it had almost harmed a person.

Michael exhaled. "Sorry."

"It's fine," Bill said. He did not make the mistake of sounding casual. "I've got it."

The boxes entered the house one by one.

They changed the room simply by existing in it.

Neverland had held music since before Julian could hold up his head. Rehearsal tapes, piano phrases, songs caught in hallways, Michael humming into tiny recorders, Lisa singing under her breath when she thought no one was listening. Music was ordinary here in the way weather was ordinary. But product was different. Product came labelled and counted. Product invited people who cared about release dates more than rooms.

Consuela arrived with coffee, took in the boxes, and immediately understood the threat.

"No boxes on my kitchen table."

"They're not going on the table," Michael said.

"I am saying it before someone becomes foolish."

Lisa accepted a mug from her. "Good. Say it again around noon."

Consuela looked at Julian. "Buenos días, Julien. Your father's boxes have invaded. We will repel them after pancakes. [Good morning, Julien. Your father's boxes have invaded. We will repel them after pancakes.]"

Julian reached for her coffee.

"No. This is adult suffering."

The delivery left. The boxes remained.

Michael set Julian down carefully near the sofa. Julian stood, swayed, recovered, then walked toward the nearest carton with the determined wobble of a man approaching evidence.

"Juju," Lisa warned.

He touched the cardboard.

It was cool under his palm.

His father's name was printed on the side.

MICHAEL JACKSON — DANGEROUS.

A child could not read it. Julian could.

The letters sat there, black and formal, acting as though they understood the man in the socks.

They did not.

Julian patted the box twice.

Michael watched him.

"That's me," he said softly.

Riley frowned. "No, that's a box."

"The box has my album in it."

"You are not in it."

"No."

"Then it is not you."

Lisa looked at Michael over her coffee. "She's not wrong."

Michael smiled, but the smile caught at the edge.

Julian left the box and walked back to him.

Three months earlier the distance would have been impossible. Now it was only risky. He crossed it with one arm out, mouth open slightly in concentration, curls bouncing. He reached Michael's knee and grabbed his trousers.

Michael crouched immediately.

Julian put one hand against his father's chest.

There.

Not the box.

Michael's face did something the world would never get on camera.

Lisa looked away first, because sometimes love needed privacy even when it was happening in front of you.

Los Angeles, California

November 26th, 1991 — 10:14 a.m.

At Tower Records on Sunset Boulevard, the clerk had learned to stop pretending he was not excited.

His name was Brian. He was twenty-three, wore his hair too long at the back, and had been telling people for two weeks that he was not one of those Michael Jackson people. This was technically true if one defined those Michael Jackson people as girls who cried in parking lots or men who spoke about Thriller as if they had personally produced it. Brian did neither. Brian only alphabetised the display three times before opening and told a co-worker that the spacing between the posters was "visually disrespectful".

"You're doing it again," said Carla from the register.

"Doing what?"

"Touching the display."

"It's crooked."

"It is not crooked."

Brian stepped back, squinted, and moved one cassette a quarter inch to the left.

Carla laughed. "You are absolutely one of those Michael Jackson people."

"I work in music retail. I respect presentation."

"You wore one glove for Halloween in '84."

"I was fifteen."

"You have a photo?"

"No."

"Liar."

The doors opened at ten.

By ten-oh-seven, five people had bought the album. By ten-fourteen, the display had a gap in it big enough to disturb Brian spiritually. A woman in an office blazer bought the cassette and asked if there was a poster. Two teenagers pooled cash for one CD and argued all the way to the door about whose house they were playing it at first. A man in a delivery uniform bought two copies and said one was for his daughter, then admitted the second was his.

The radio behind the counter had already played the lead single twice that morning.

Carla rang up another sale. "You think it's gonna be Thriller big?"

Brian looked at the poster.

Michael Jackson stared back from the wall, all shadow and eyes and impossible cheekbones, photographed in a way that made him look less like a man than a warning.

"Nothing is Thriller big," Brian said.

Then, after a second, because honesty had climbed up through his professional cool and embarrassed him: "But listen to the drums."

Carla smiled.

The phone rang.

Brian picked up. "Tower Sunset."

A voice asked if they had Dangerous in stock.

Brian looked at the display, at the gaps widening in it, at the line forming behind the woman in the blazer, at Carla mouthing one of those Michael Jackson people with terrible smugness.

"For now," he said.

Neverland Ranch, Los Olivos, California

November 26th, 1991 — 1:32 p.m.

Riley believed albums should come with pictures.

This was not an unreasonable position. The Dangerous booklet had many pictures. Some were strange, some elaborate, some looked like someone had trapped an entire dream inside expensive paper and then asked a committee to explain it badly. Riley sat cross-legged on the rug with the booklet open in front of her while Benjamin lay on his stomach beside her, chin on both hands.

"Why is there a monkey?" Benjamin asked.

"Because Michael likes animals."

"He's Michael's monkey?"

"No. Dad is Dad. Michael is Dad to Juno."

"But Dad is Dad to us."

"Yes."

Benjamin thought about the family tree with the grave concern it deserved. "Too many dads."

From the sofa, Danny looked up from a magazine. "You get used to it."

Lisa nearly choked on her tea.

Michael, sitting on the floor with Julian between his knees, tried very hard not to laugh because Benjamin took genealogical issues seriously.

Julian was more interested in the CD case. It caught light along the edge when he turned it, a hard square of future disguised as plastic. He had seen discs in his previous life by the thousand, scratched in cars, stacked beside consoles, sold in markets, forgotten in old drawers after streaming made ownership feel old-fashioned. But this one had his father's name on it. That changed the weight.

He pressed it flat against the rug.

Michael's hand hovered, not stopping him. "Careful."

Julian looked up.

Michael lowered the hand.

"Sorry."

Lisa saw it from the chair. "He's fine."

"I know."

"Do you?"

Michael's mouth tilted. "I am learning fine has more range than I expected."

Riley turned a page. "Dad looks scary here."

Michael leaned forward. "Scary?"

"A little."

"Good scary?"

Riley examined the photograph with the authority of a very small critic. "Fancy scary."

Danny nodded. "That's a review."

"Put that on the poster," Lisa said. "Michael Jackson: fancy scary."

Michael laughed then, properly, and the room released something.

That was how the album existed in the house that afternoon. Not as sales projections or reviews. As paper on a rug, as Benjamin trying to count how many animals were hidden in the artwork, as Riley deciding which photographs were acceptable, as Danny making dry comments from the sofa, as Lisa reminding Michael that a person could be loved without being consumed.

Julian crawled into his father's lap and brought the case with him.

Michael took it carefully.

"You like it?"

Julian patted the photograph.

He could not say: This will not be Thriller, and they will measure you against a mountain until they forget mountains are not meant to be repeated.

He could not say: They will love it and still call it less than, because the world has never known what to do with excellence after it gets used to it.

He could not say any of the true things.

So he leaned his head against Michael's chest.

Michael understood enough.

He always understood more through touch than words.

November 27th, 1991 — 8:07 a.m.

The review desk at Rolling Stone smelled of coffee, dust, and men with opinions.

Ellen Marks had been at her desk since seven, which was not noble because she had only gone home at two. A cassette copy of Dangerous sat beside her legal pad. The album had been playing in the office all morning and therefore had already become the office's weather. Editors passed through pretending they were not timing their movements to the rhythm. One intern had mouthed an entire chorus before realising Ellen was watching him.

"You writing it?" her editor asked.

"I am trying."

"That's not usually a problem for you."

"Michael Jackson is annoying."

He smiled. "As a subject?"

"As a moving target."

That was the problem. The easy review was available. Everyone knew it. Thriller shadow. Bad comparison. New jack swing. Public appetite. The machinery of Michael Jackson as cultural event rather than simply musician. All true. All insufficient.

Ellen rewound the cassette to hear a drum pattern again.

The office phone rang behind her. Someone laughed. A typewriter clacked. In the corner, a television turned to MTV with the sound low showed a VJ talking under Michael's image. The whole culture was already building the room in which the album would be judged.

She wrote one sentence.

Then crossed it out.

The music did not feel like a return. That was too sentimental. It did not feel like reinvention either. That was too clean. It felt like a man trying to make the future arrive on his schedule while the past stood behind him asking why he could not do the miracle again.

Ellen tapped her pen against the pad.

That was closer.

She began again.

November 27th, 1991 — 9:46 p.m.

By the second night, the house had stopped treating the album like a guest.

This was how houses survived famous people. They absorbed the impossible until it became something you stepped around in socks. Dangerous lay on the kitchen counter beside grocery lists. A review clipping sat near Priscilla's handbag. Three unopened packages remained in the hall despite Consuela's continuing campaign against cardboard. Someone from Epic called twice before lunch and once during dinner, which Lisa considered hostile action.

Michael took the final call in the hallway.

Julian sat on Lisa's lap in the family room, heavy with sleep and refusing it on principle. Riley and Benjamin had been put to bed, escaped, negotiated water, been returned to bed, reappeared with a question about whether monkeys could be in albums and not cages, and were now asleep by accident in two different positions across the sofa.

Priscilla sat with a newspaper folded on her knee.

Lisa watched the hallway.

"He's doing the voice," she said.

Priscilla looked up. "Which one?"

"The polite one where he makes everybody feel forgiven even when he's saying no."

"Useful voice."

"Dangerous voice."

Julian's head rested against Lisa's collarbone. He could hear Michael faintly: gentle, careful, arranged. Not fake. That was the thing people misunderstood. Michael's public gentleness was not fake. It was real. It was also armour. Real armour was still armour.

Priscilla unfolded the newspaper again. "The early reviews are strong."

Lisa did not look away from the hallway. "They'll still make him fight Thriller."

"Yes."

"Every time."

"Yes."

Lisa's mouth tightened. "I hate that album sometimes."

Priscilla's eyebrows rose.

"Not the music," Lisa said. "The throne. The way everybody thinks a person should be grateful to sit on something that cuts them."

Julian opened his eyes.

There she was. His mother, naming a thing without making a speech of it. Not strategy. Not industry analysis. Just fury with good aim.

Michael returned to the room a minute later. He looked tired in the way adults did when tiredness had nothing to do with sleep.

"Everything okay?" Lisa asked.

"Yes."

She waited.

He smiled faintly. "That is not enough for you."

"No."

"They want more interviews. More television. More access."

"Of course they do."

"I said no to most of it."

Lisa's shoulders lowered by a fraction.

Priscilla nodded once.

Michael looked at Julian. "He's awake?"

"He's pretending not to be."

Julian closed his eyes immediately.

"Subtle," Lisa said.

Michael crossed the room and sat on the floor in front of them. For a while no one spoke. The television was off. The album was off. The room made its ordinary sounds: refrigerator hum through the kitchen wall, Benjamin's congested sleep, Riley muttering one fierce nonsense word in a dream.

Michael touched Julian's foot through the blanket.

"He heard it," he said.

Lisa's hand moved over Julian's back. "He hears everything."

"I know."

"That's not always a gift."

Michael nodded.

Julian stayed very still. Not because he was trying to perform stillness. Because the sentence had found him.

He did hear everything. Notes, tones, lies, fear, love trying to sound casual, adults moving around sharp subjects, the whole house making music out of things it did not know were instruments.

It was not always a gift.

But that night, with his father's album outside the room and his mother's hand steady on his back, the hearing did not hurt.

Michael leaned forward and kissed Julian's curls.

"Goodnight, Juju."

Lisa corrected softly, "He is not asleep."

"He might accept the suggestion."

Julian did not.

Not immediately.

He waited until Michael's hand was still on his foot and Lisa's breathing had slowed and Priscilla turned the page with the careful quiet of someone who knew what peace cost.

Then he slept.

The boxes stayed in the hall.

The world kept buying the album.

The house, stubborn and warm and full of people who refused to use the correct furniture for the correct purpose, kept him.

Los Angeles, California

November 28th, 1991 — 6:36 a.m.

The morning radio host on Power 106 had promised himself he would not use the word genius before seven.

This was not because the word was wrong. It was because once morning radio discovered a word, it chewed it until there was nothing left but wet syllables. Genius. King. Comeback. Thriller. Dangerous. The phone lines had been lit since dawn with callers who wanted less to speak than to prove they had been present when the record arrived.

A woman from Inglewood said she had played the album twice in a row and burned breakfast.

A man calling from a truck route said the beat made the 405 feel less like punishment.

A teenager whispered because his mother was asleep in the next room and said, with total seriousness, that Michael sounded like he was fighting the future and winning by a point.

The host wrote that one down.

"You hear that?" his producer said through the glass.

"I heard it."

"Use it."

"I'm not stealing from a kid before coffee."

He cued the next track instead.

For three minutes and forty seconds the studio stopped pretending it was a workplace. The producer leaned back with both hands behind his head. The intern near the carts mouthed the percussion like it had lyrics. The host watched the needles jump and thought about how strange it was that a record could leave a mansion in Santa Barbara and end up inside a taxi, a kitchen, a bedroom, a city bus, every place ordinary people needed something larger than the morning.

When the song ended, he let the silence sit for one beat longer than radio allowed.

Then he leaned into the microphone.

"That's Michael Jackson," he said. "And I don't know what everybody else is calling it, but out here? That record is alive."

November 28th, 1991 — 8:19 a.m.

At breakfast, the record was alive and also in the way.

A newspaper had been folded beside Michael's plate. Someone had circled a sentence in one review and underlined another in a different paper. There were sales numbers on a fax by the fruit bowl, which Consuela had declared disrespectful to the oranges.

"Paper does not belong with fruit," she said.

"It's not touching the fruit," Bill replied.

"It is emotionally touching the fruit."

Lisa laughed into her coffee before she could stop herself.

Michael looked better for hearing it.

Julian sat in his chair working through pieces of toast with jam. He had learned that jam improved almost everything except fingers, which became unusable for serious business afterward. Riley was reading one headline aloud with the intense suspicion of a child who had recently discovered adults wrote things down even when nobody asked them to.

"It says," she said slowly, "Michael Jackson returns."

Benjamin looked at Michael. "Where did you go?"

Michael's mouth opened.

Closed.

Danny, who had chosen that exact second to drink juice, coughed into his napkin.

Lisa leaned back. "That's a fair question."

"I didn't go anywhere," Michael said.

Riley frowned at the paper. "Then they are wrong."

"Often," Priscilla said.

Julian looked from the headline to his father. Returns. As if a person existed only when the public last remembered wanting them. As if the rooms between albums were not full of socks, children, pancakes, bad sleep, careful hands, Lisa stealing Michael's orange slices when she thought no one noticed.

He slapped his sticky hand down on the newspaper.

Everyone looked.

A perfect red jam print landed across the word returns.

Consuela nodded once. "Good. Improvement."

Lisa covered her mouth.

Michael stared at the jam mark.

Then he laughed, softly at first, then with his whole body bending forward over the table.

The headline remained wrong.

The jam remained correct.

Breakfast, having considered the matter, continued.
