Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Black Star Rising

The city had descended into chaos. Explosions echoed in the distance, and the neon lights of Galaxy's towering skyscrapers flickered erratically. Sirens blared, and the crowd on the streets had transformed from bustling shoppers to panicked citizens scrambling for safety.

Sans, hands stuffed in his hoodie pockets, casually strolled through the pandemonium as if he were walking through a park. His newly repaired drone buzzed beside him, emitting a soft, rhythmic hum, completely unaffected by the escalating danger. The scene reminded him of the occasional resets back in the Underground—a world collapsing around him, and he the only one with the luxury of time to watch it all unfold.

"Looks like this place could use a good Reset," he muttered, watching a hovercar explode into a shower of sparks as it collided with a nearby building.

His interface pinged, bringing up a new notification.

New Quest: Join a Faction.

Optional Objectives:

Investigate the Black Star Mercenaries.Investigate the Galactic Federation.

Sans raised an eyebrow, grinning as he read the options. "Factions, huh? Guess this is more complicated than I thought." He glanced over to where Kaylar had disappeared earlier, no doubt preparing for whatever next move the Black Star Mercenaries had planned.

The Black Star Mercenaries—or the "Black Stars," as they were more commonly called—seemed like a rowdy bunch, but they clearly had a finger on the pulse of the conflict in this city. On the other hand, the Galactic Federation probably had resources, structure, and more information on this entire world.

He sighed, shifting his gaze to the blinking notification. "Guess it's decision time."

Choice:

Join the Black Star Mercenaries.Join the Galactic Federation.

Without much hesitation, Sans tapped the Black Star option. Kaylar seemed to be his best lead at the moment, and getting tangled up with mercenaries sounded like a lot more fun than signing up with the military.

Quest Updated: Meet with Kaylar.

His drone buzzed, guiding him down a narrow alleyway away from the chaos. As Sans walked, the city became darker, the streets less crowded. He passed rundown buildings, broken neon signs, and the occasional vagrant. The sleek, shiny utopia of Galaxy faded away, giving way to a seedier underbelly. This was the part of town where mercenaries and outlaws thrived.

"Home sweet home," Sans said with a soft chuckle.

At the end of the alleyway, a large warehouse loomed. The rusting metal doors and faded insignia of the Black Star Mercenaries were barely visible under the grime. Two guards—both wearing patched-up armor similar to Kaylar's—stood at attention by the entrance. Their eyes narrowed when they saw Sans approaching, but they made no move to stop him.

"Yo," Sans greeted, his casual tone earning him raised eyebrows from the guards.

"Who the hell are you?" one of them growled.

Sans shrugged. "Kaylar sent me. Said you guys might have some work."

The guards exchanged a glance. One of them spoke into a comm device on his wrist, then nodded toward Sans. "Head inside. Don't cause trouble."

"Trouble? Me? Never." Sans gave them a lazy wave as he walked through the doors.

The inside of the warehouse was a far cry from the chaos of the city outside. It was a makeshift base, filled with all sorts of tech, weapons, and half-assembled vehicles. Mercenaries moved about, gearing up for what looked like an impending mission. The air was thick with the smell of oil and smoke, and the atmosphere buzzed with tension.

Kaylar spotted Sans from across the room and waved him over. "Glad you made it, stranger. Figured the city might've eaten you up by now."

Sans smirked. "Nah, I'm not so easy to chew. So, what's the plan?"

Kaylar motioned for Sans to follow him to a table where a large holographic map of the city was displayed. Various points on the map were highlighted in red, marking Federation strongholds and key supply routes.

"We're hitting one of the Federation's supply depots tonight," Kaylar explained, pointing to one of the red marks. "They've been running weapons and tech through here, and we're gonna cut off their supply line. It's a big score, and it'll hurt them bad. But we need all the hands we can get."

Sans examined the map, then glanced at Kaylar. "Sounds fun. What do you need me for?"

Kaylar grinned. "You're good with machines, right? We need someone to disable their security system. It's heavily automated, so if you can shut it down, we'll have an easier time getting in and out without triggering the alarms."

Sans gave a slow nod. "Alright. Sounds doable. What's the catch?"

Kaylar's grin faded slightly. "The catch is that the depot's guarded by a heavy Federation unit. They've got drones, mechs, and some tough soldiers on standby. We'll be in a firefight before we even get close."

Sans shrugged. "Eh, sounds like a typical Tuesday. Count me in."

Kaylar looked relieved. "Glad to have you on board, stranger. Stick with me, and you might just survive this."

Sans couldn't help but chuckle. "Survive? You'd be surprised how good I am at that."

Hours later, Sans found himself crouched behind a pile of crates on the outskirts of the Federation supply depot. The night sky above was filled with the hum of Federation drones, their lights scanning the ground below for any signs of intruders.

Kaylar and the rest of the Black Star Mercenaries were stationed nearby, ready to move in as soon as Sans disabled the security systems. His drone hovered beside him, its small screen displaying a mess of code as it worked to hack into the depot's mainframe.

"Almost there," Sans muttered, his eye glowing faintly as he manipulated the code with ease. The interface had proven to be a useful tool, and hacking into complex systems like this one was child's play for someone with his new mechanic skills.

[Hacking - Skill Activated]

With a final keystroke, the security system went offline. The lights in the depot flickered, and the drones hovering above suddenly froze in place before dropping to the ground with a heavy thud.

"All clear," Sans said into his comm device, standing up and dusting off his hands.

Kaylar's voice crackled through the device. "Nice work, stranger. We're moving in."

The Black Stars emerged from the shadows, slipping through the now-unprotected perimeter. Sans followed behind, watching as they made quick work of the guards stationed around the depot.

As the mercenaries looted the depot, gathering weapons, tech, and supplies, Sans leaned against a nearby wall, watching the operation with mild interest. Kaylar walked up to him, grinning from ear to ear.

"You did good, stranger. With this haul, we'll be able to fund our operations for weeks."

Sans gave a lazy thumbs-up. "Glad to help."

Just as Kaylar was about to say more, an alarm blared across the depot. The ground trembled, and the distant sound of heavy footsteps echoed through the night.

Kaylar's grin vanished. "Damn it. They must've sent reinforcements."

Sans stretched, a bone materializing lazily in his hand. "Looks like the fun's not over yet."

From the shadows, massive Federation mechs stomped into view, their cannons charging as they prepared to engage the Black Stars. The real battle had just begun.
