Chapter 26 - Fire, Light, and Hidden Eyes

The Ritual of Harmony was no joke. I stood in a circle of glowing marks, my heart thumping like a drum. Lunox's wings, gold and black, curled around me, shining like a strange light show. Queen Celestina chanted nearby, her voice steady, making the air buzz. Energy swirled, hot and cold, like I was stuck in a blender. Just what I needed—more prophecy nonsense to mess up.

The Carpathian forest's spirit realm was all mist and shadows, with trees like ghosts. I had to take in Lunox's Chaos and Creation powers, but it felt like grabbing a storm and a breeze at once. My hands were sweaty, my legs shaky, and I kept thinking, What if I can't handle this?

"Stay focused, Eli," Lunox said, her two-colored eyes serious. "Chaos is like a wild fire—strong but dangerous. Creation is like a sunny day—soft but steady. Let them in, but don't lose yourself."

"Lose myself," I muttered. "Great plan."

Celestina's chanting got stronger, and the energy hit me like a wave. Chaos came first—a hot, wild fire that made me feel like I could break a wall. Black sparks jumped on my hands, and a crazy urge pushed me to let it all out, like something saying, Smash stuff. My head pounded, but I held it back.

"Find Creation," Lunox said, her voice sharp. "Balance it."

I took a deep breath, reaching for the other power. It was warm, like a cozy blanket. A soft gold glow started in my chest, calming my head. The sparks vanished, and the glow felt like a gentle hug, but it was tricky to hold, like it might slip away.

Celestina stopped chanting, her starry crown bright. "You've done it, Eli. The powers are yours."

The circle's glow faded, and Lunox's wings pulled back. I stumbled, my legs wobbly, but Lunox grabbed my arm. "You okay?" she asked, softer now.

"Barely," I said, my hands buzzing. "That was like a cosmic workout."

Celestina stepped closer, her eyes kind but serious. "Eli Cain, you've passed this trial. But Chaos and Creation need balance, or they'll harm you. Trust Lunox, and trust yourself."

"Thanks," I said, managing a weak smile. "Any chance I get a break now?"

She laughed, soft like a bell. "Your journey is just beginning. Go with my blessing, but know the path ahead is hard." She touched my shoulder, her hand warm. "Farewell, young Cain. May we meet again."

"See you, Celestina," I said, feeling weirdly sad. "Thanks for not letting me explode."

She smiled, then faded into the mist, her crown's light lingering. The spirit realm blurred, and we were back in the real forest. The air was cold, smelling of pine and earth. Luna and Sebastian waited in a clearing, Luna gripping her dagger, Sebastian holding his sword like always.

"Eli!" Luna ran over, her eyes wide. "You're back! You look like you got shocked."

"Nice to see you too," I said, smirking. "Just, you know, grabbed some new powers. Normal stuff."

She checked me over, her hand brushing my arm. "You sure you're okay?"

Her worry made me grin. "Relax, Winters. I'm not that easy to break."

Sebastian walked up, his face serious. "What did you gain?"

"Chaos and Creation," I said, rubbing my neck. "One's like fire, the other's like a shield. Gotta keep them balanced or I'm in trouble."

"Show us," Luna said, her grin teasing. "Or are you all talk?"

"Watch this," I said. I called Chaos, and a tiny black flame flickered on my hand, hot and wild. It felt strong, but I kept it small, not wanting to go nuts. Then I tried Creation, and a soft gold glow made a little bubble around my hand, calm and gentle.

"Not bad," Luna said, impressed. "But don't set the trees on fire."

"Spoilsport," I said, letting the glow fade. My hands were still tingly, like I'd held a sparkler.

Lunox floated beside me, her wings shimmering. "Good start, Eli. But these powers are new. Practice, and stay balanced."

Sebastian nodded, but his eyes flicked to the trees. "We need to leave. This place isn't safe."

Luna frowned, pointing at the ground. "Look—tracks. Not animals. Someone's been around." Her hunter voice was sharp. She knelt, touching faint marks in the dirt. "My brother used to check tracks like these. Before vampires got him."

"Your brother?" I asked, keeping it light.

"Yeah," she said, standing, her eyes dark. "He fought a vampire nest. Didn't come back." She gripped her dagger, looking away.

"Sorry," I said, wishing I had better words.

She gave a small nod. "Just… be careful, okay?"

"Always," I said, flashing a grin to lighten the mood.

Sebastian cleared his throat. "The map, Eli."

I pulled the map from my pocket, its leather warm. It glowed bright, and a shape appeared—Africa, just the continent. Words formed, a four-line poem:

"In sands where ancient rivers flow,

Gods' secrets in stone shadows grow.

Seek the land where kings' tombs stand,

There your trial will mark the land."

"Africa?" I said, scratching my head. "What's with rivers and tombs?"

Luna read over my shoulder. "Sounds like Egypt. The Nile's a river, and they've got pyramids—tombs for kings, right?"

Sebastian tilted his head. "Egypt makes sense. Gods like Ra, stone pyramids. A strong guess."

I touched the map, pointing at Egypt. "Let's try it." I pressed my finger, and the map pulsed, a dot glowing in Egypt to confirm.

"Good call, Winters," I said, grinning. "You're not just a pretty face."

She smirked, her shoulder bumping mine. "Keep up, Cain."

Sebastian's face stayed blank. "The trial will test life and death. Be ready."

"More fun," I muttered. "Just what I needed."

Lunox spoke up. "I'm coming with you, Eli. My powers are yours now, and I'll guide you."

"Sweet," I said. "A cosmic sidekick."

As we packed and started walking, the forest felt heavy, like it was watching. Near the edge, Luna stopped, her eyes narrowing. "Hold on." She pointed to snapped twigs and scuff marks in the dirt, just outside the trees. "More tracks. Fresh. Someone was here, but they didn't come in."

"How?" I asked. "Celestina was guarding this place."

"Exactly," Luna said, her voice low. "No one gets in with her around. They stayed out here, watching."

Sebastian's hand tightened on his sword. "We're not alone."

I glanced at him, noticing him slip a small amulet from his coat. It flashed red, and he muttered something, hiding it fast. Luna saw it too, her jaw tight.

"What's that?" I asked, keeping my tone casual.

Sebastian's eyes were cold. "A warning. The Crimson Society knows you're here."

My stomach dropped. Crimson Society—vampires with too much power. "Great," I said. "More creepy fans."

Lunox's wings flickered. "We must go. The trial awaits."

Luna stayed close as we left the forest, her hand brushing mine. "You okay?" she asked quietly.

"Yeah," I said, forcing a smile. "Just hoping Egypt's got less stalkers."

She grinned, and for a second, the prophecy didn't feel so bad. But those tracks stuck in my head, and I knew trouble was out there, maybe closer than I thought.
