With their scheduled class suddenly canceled, most students took the unexpected free time to relax or play in the maze. However, Wade and his friends decided to head to the hospital wing.
Before they even reached the door, they heard someone shouting loudly inside:
"I was almost killed! I'm going to tell my father! Just you wait, you stupid oaf—my father will never let you off the hook!"
Michael immediately stopped in his tracks.
"Malfoy? The injured person is Malfoy?" He turned to Wade. "Then we don't really need to check in, do we?"
"This isn't a good thing, Michael," Theo said with a frown. "Professor Hagrid might get fired for this."
Michael waved dismissively. "Accidents happen in class all the time. Who hasn't gotten hurt in Potions? Oh… right, Wade probably hasn't."
As he spoke, he was already preparing to turn back.
Then, Malfoy's voice rang out again from inside the hospital wing:
"And that damned beast! I'll have its head chopped off! It's as good as dead!"
Michael's expression darkened instantly.
"Let's go take a look," Wade said.
The group continued forward. As they reached the doorway, they heard Harry say in a weak voice: "Shut up, Malfoy."
Though Harry's voice wasn't loud, Malfoy actually fell silent for a moment. Just then, Wade pushed open the slightly ajar door.
Inside, there were two occupied hospital beds.
Harry's robes were torn at the shoulder, revealing deep, bloody gashes. His entire body was covered in bloodstains, and his face was deathly pale.
Madam Pomfrey was applying a thick layer of green ointment to his wounds before handing him a steaming, bubbling potion that smelled absolutely awful.
As for Draco Malfoy, there was some blood on his arm, but not much. His wounds had already been healed with magic, yet he still clutched his arm dramatically and groaned about how much it hurt.
In the corner of the room sat Hagrid. The tiny stool beneath him seemed ridiculously undersized for his massive frame. He sat hunched over, with his large hands resting on his knees, and he looked utterly dejected.
He stared at the floor in misery, completely unresponsive to Malfoy's insults, as if he had already been crushed into silence.
The arrival of Wade and his friends interrupted the strange atmosphere in the hospital wing.
"Harry?" Theo asked in surprise. "How did you get hurt?"
"Bad luck," Harry muttered. Then, he glanced at them and asked, "What are you guys doing here? Shouldn't you be in class right now?"
"Yeah, Care of Magical Creatures," Michael said, glancing at Hagrid in the corner. "But since the professor wasn't there, our class was canceled."
"I'm sorry," Hagrid said dejectedly. "I'm really sorry… I don't think I can teach you anymore… No Hogwarts professor has ever lasted only one day."
"It's not your fault, Hagrid."
Harry quickly reassured him, "You told us that Hippogriffs are proud creatures and must be treated with respect. Malfoy deliberately insulted them—that's why they got angry. It's his fault."
"It's his fault!" Malfoy shouted furiously. "He never should have brought such dangerous creatures to class in the first place!"
"Basilisks are even more dangerous, but we still faced one!" Harry shot back. "No wonder you weren't there last time—it's because you're a coward!"
Malfoy's breathing turned heavy with anger, but at the same time, a flicker of guilt crossed his face. His eyes darted quickly toward Wade and Madam Pomfrey.
The reason Malfoy hadn't participated in the Basilisk incident last term was because he'd had an… intense falling out with Crabbe beforehand.
Under his father's insistence, that matter had been completely covered up, so Harry and the others had no idea. But Madam Pomfrey, who had treated Crabbe, and Wade, who had provided the recorded evidence, knew exactly what had happened.
Madam Pomfrey, however, acted as if she hadn't heard a thing. Instead, she simply extended a cup toward Harry.
"Drink this, child. A Hippogriff's claws may carry toxins. Your wounds are too deep—they won't heal easily."
Harry, who had been fuming with righteous indignation, instantly pulled a face. He shrank back slightly, and looked at the ominous dark green potion like it was his worst nightmare.
He would much rather face a Hippogriff again than drink it.
But under Madam Pomfrey's stern gaze, Harry had no choice. He took the cup, squeezed his eyes shut, and gulped it down in one go.
A putrid stench filled the air, it was overpowering—worse than a hundred sweaty socks. Even Malfoy, despite everything, looked at Harry with a rare moment of sympathy.
Madam Pomfrey, on the other hand, seemed satisfied. Then, she turned and shot a warning glare at Wade and the others.
"No fighting in my hospital wing. If you disturb my patients, I will throw you all out!"
"Understood, Madam," the group responded one after another.
Once Madam Pomfrey left, Harry immediately clamped his hands over his mouth, as if trying to keep himself from throwing up the potion.
Ignoring Malfoy on the next bed, Wade asked, "Malfoy insulted the Hippogriff, got attacked… and then? How did you get hurt?"
At Wade's question, the already miserable-looking Harry froze for a moment—then, all of a sudden, he started coughing loudly.
Malfoy also averted his gaze, as if trying to avoid the subject entirely.
It was Hagrid who spoke up instead. "Harry got hurt trying to save Malfoy... It's all my fault. If only I'd managed to hold onto Buckbeak, none of this would've happened..."
"I shouldn't have let them all loose. If I had only unchained one Hippogriff at a time, I could have kept things under control..."
"Or if I'd realized sooner that Malfoy was running his mouth and gotten to them immediately, this wouldn't have happened either..."
"Maybe for the first lesson, I should've picked something safer, like Flobberworms or something… Why did I think a surprise would make students like me more? I completely messed it all up..."
"I'm such an idiot... I'm not fit to be a professor at all..."
As he sat there, Hagrid had clearly been replaying the classroom disaster over and over in his mind. He listed every mistake he had made, filled with regret, and looked like he was on the verge of tears.
Malfoy let out a cold snort and muttered, "At least you know it! This lesson was a complete disaster!"
"No way!" Michael jumped in, startled. "Hippogriffs were an amazing surprise—I loved it! And I definitely don't want to see Flobberworms in class!"
"Really?" Hagrid looked at him with teary eyes.
"Of course," Ryan added. "I'm looking forward to our next Care of Magical Creatures lesson. I hope you won't miss it next time, Professor."
"And bring the Hippogriffs back too!" Michael chimed in.
"But they are dangerous creatures," Padma said with a small cough, choosing her words carefully. "For everyone's safety, maybe we could take some precautions? I have a few suggestions..."
The group gathered around Hagrid, helping their disheartened professor redesign a safer yet still exciting lesson.
Meanwhile, Wade walked over to Malfoy's hospital bed with a polite, friendly smile.
"What do you want?"
Malfoy immediately sat up alertly, and even subconsciously reached for his wand.
Wade pressed down on the tip of Malfoy's wand and leaned slightly forward as he continued to smile.
"Malfoy, let's have a chat?"
