Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: The First Step Toward the Horizon (Part 1)

The morning sun rose gently over Ambrette Town, bathing its stone houses and ancient cliffs in a warm golden light. Dew sparkled on the grass, and the cool breeze carried the cheerful cries of Wingull flying overhead. It was another beautiful day in the peaceful town.

But for Lily, today wasn't just another ordinary morning.

Today was the day she had dreamed about ever since she could remember.

She was finally beginning her Pokémon journey.

Lily slowly opened her eyes as the first rays of sunlight slipped through the curtains of her bedroom. For a few seconds, she simply stared at the ceiling, letting the realization sink in.

"Today's the day..."

A smile gradually spread across her face.

"I really get to start my adventure."

Almost immediately, she heard soft scratching at her bedroom door.

"Come in!"

The door swung open as Amaura happily trotted inside, its blue sail-like frills swaying gently. Behind it bounced Happiny, carrying a small pink pouch nearly half its size.

"Amaura!"

"Happiny!"

The two Pokémon excitedly climbed onto Lily's bed.

"Hahaha! Good morning to you two as well."

Amaura affectionately rubbed its head against Lily's shoulder while Happiny eagerly held up the little pouch.

"Is that for me?"

"Happi!"

Lily opened the pouch and found several freshly picked Oran Berries neatly tucked inside.

"You picked these this morning?"

Both Pokémon nodded proudly.

"Thank you."

She gently hugged them both.

"I couldn't ask for better partners."

---

After washing up and changing into her working clothes–Lily headed downstairs.

The Pokémon Center was already bustling with activity.

Chansey hurried between patients while several Trainers waited patiently with their Pokémon. Nurse Joy moved gracefully from one examination table to another, checking on each Pokémon with her usual gentle smile.

When she noticed Lily, her face immediately brightened.

"Good morning, sweetheart."

"Morning, Mom."

"You slept well?"

Lily nodded.

"I don't think I've ever been this excited."

"I could tell," Nurse Joy laughed. "You were smiling even in your sleep."

"Mooom..."

Chansey giggled beside them.

"Chan, Chansey!"

---

Even though it was Lily's departure day, she insisted on helping around the Pokémon Center one last time.

She carefully organized medicine bottles, restocked potions, helped prepare pokémon food, and assisted trainers who had arrived early.

"Thank you, Lily," an elderly traveler said after she returned his healed Dedenne.

"I wish my granddaughter were as hardworking as you."

Lily scratched the back of her head shyly.

"It was nothing."

Nearby, Amaura helped cool down overheated pokémon using Powder Snow, while Happiny happily delivered towels to trainers under Chansey's supervision.

Nurse Joy watched the three of them with pride.

"She's grown so much..."

It felt like only yesterday Lily had been taking her first steps around the Pokémon Center.

Now...

She was ready to see the world.

---

By late morning, the last patient had left.

The Pokémon Center became unusually quiet.

Nurse Joy smiled warmly.

"I think that's enough work for today."

Lily blinked.

"Really?"

"Today isn't about helping me."

She gently placed both hands on Lily's shoulders.

"It's about your future."

---

Together they walked into the dining room.

The table was filled with Lily's favorite dishes.

Fresh berry sandwiches.

Cream stew.

Homemade bread.

Poképuffs.

Fruit salad.

Even a birthday-sized cheesecake sat in the middle.

Lily's eyes widened.

"Mom..."

Nurse Joy smiled sheepishly.

"I know your birthday celebration was a few days ago..."

"...but I wanted one more family meal before you left."

Lily suddenly found herself unable to speak.

Instead, she quietly sat down.

The three Pokémon eagerly joined them.

Amaura politely waited.

Happiny already had cream on its face before anyone started eating.

Everyone laughed.

For nearly an hour, they simply enjoyed one another's company.

No discussions about battles.

No worries.

Just family.

---

After lunch, Nurse Joy stood up and disappeared upstairs.

She returned carrying a neatly folded traveling cloak and a medium-sized backpack.

"I've been preparing these for months."

She handed them to Lily.

Inside the backpack were carefully organized supplies.

Ten Potions.

Five Antidotes.

Five Paralyze Heals.

Burn Heal.

Ice Heal.

Sleeping bag.

Camping utensils.

Extra clothes.

Berry containers.

Emergency food.

A first-aid kit.

Several handwritten notes tucked neatly into different pockets.

Lily opened one.

"Don't forget to eat breakfast."

She opened another.

"If Amaura catches a cold, keep it warm."

Another.

"Remember to smile, even when things become difficult."

Her eyes became watery.

"You... wrote all of these?"

Nurse Joy nodded.

"I know I won't be there every day."

"So... I wanted those notes to be."

Lily immediately hugged her mother tightly.

"Thank you..."

"No matter how old I become..."

"...I'll always treasure these."

---

A sudden knock echoed through the Pokémon Center.

"I'll get it!"

Lily hurried to the entrance.

Standing outside was Officer Jenny beside her loyal Arcanine.

Behind them stood Gym Leader Grant carrying a neatly wrapped package.

Officer Jenny smiled.

"Looks like we're just in time."

Grant chuckled.

"I don't think we'd forgive ourselves if we missed seeing our favorite young Trainer off."

Lily laughed.

"You guys came!"

"Of course," Jenny replied.

"This is a pretty important day."

As they entered, several more familiar faces followed behind.

The museum curator.

Some neighboring families.

Children Lily often played with.

Even the workers from the fossil laboratory.

The Pokémon Center suddenly became lively once more.

---

Officer Jenny stepped forward holding a small blue case.

"This arrived yesterday."

She opened it.

Inside rested a sleek red Pokédex bearing Professor Sycamore's insignia alongside an official Kalos Trainer License.

Lily gasped.

"My Trainer License..."

Jenny nodded.

"Professor Sycamore approved your registration personally."

She handed both items over.

"Congratulations."

"You are now officially recognized as a Pokémon Trainer."

For a brief moment...

Lily simply stared at the license in her hands.

It represented more than permission to battle.

It represented freedom.

Responsibility.

Dreams.

A new beginning.

She carefully held it against her chest.

"I'll treasure it."

---

Grant stepped forward next.

"I don't have anything as official."

"...but I hope this helps."

He handed Lily a beautifully wrapped package.

Inside was a leather-bound notebook embossed with a fossil emblem.

"The pages are waterproof."

"You can record your observations about fossil Pokémon."

His smile widened.

"I expect to read it one day."

Lily's face lit up.

"I'll fill every page."

The museum curator laughed.

"I'll be disappointed if you don't."

---

Officer Jenny suddenly cleared her throat dramatically.

"Oh."

"I almost forgot."

She reached into her pocket and placed six Luxury Balls into Lily's palm.

"A little gift from the Ambrette Police Department."

Lily blinked.

"Really?"

Jenny grinned.

"You'll probably meet plenty of Pokémon on your journey."

"Besides..."

She crossed her arms playfully.

"If you cause trouble..."

"I'll know exactly whose Trainer License to suspend."

Everyone burst into laughter.

"I promise I won't!" Lily replied, laughing.

Jenny raised an eyebrow.

"We'll see about that."

Arcanine barked happily, making the room erupt in laughter once more.
