Chapter 644, Island Lord Wu Heng Sent a Gift
Zombie World, conference room.
Wu Heng sat on one side, with Gao Rong opposite him holding pen and paper.
Wu Heng handed him the last mechanist scroll and said, "I'm heading back today. You're in charge here."
Gao Rong replied seriously, "Rest assured, Chief. I'll make sure everything here runs smoothly."
Wu Heng was fairly satisfied with his attitude.
He continued, "I have a few tasks for you to carry out."
"Go ahead." Gao Rong raised his pen, ready to take notes.
"Tiancheng Group is to continue developing remaining weapon production—prioritize autocannons, cannon shells, and machine guns."
Gao Rong nodded and jotted it down.
Wu Heng added, "Those Russian institutes—they were researching electricity, right? Have them continue in that direction, especially for vehicle power systems. Cars, ships, even planes. Eventually, electricity needs to replace fuel."
"Tell them that if they make any breakthroughs, we'll give them class scrolls. They may not understand what those are, so just say it enhances physical attributes—like corpse cores."
Gao Rong raised a brow but noted it down.
Wu Heng's focus was clear: mass weapon production and eliminating fuel dependency.
The base's power plant could now generate electricity without fuel—difficult to understand, but it meant no power shortage.
Once fuel was replaced, all machines and vehicles could run freely.
No more hassle collecting fuel.
"Got it. Any other orders?" Gao Rong asked.
Wu Heng thought for a moment, then added, "Tell Li Yanhong to assign people to promote the base—recruit more talent externally, and promote the Chief and Deputy Chief internally to boost unity."
Wu Heng's real goal was to increase his renown among the survivors.
The bases didn't have many people, but every bit helped.
Small gains could add up.
Gao Rong considered and said, "It's hard to say over radio. I'll send someone to Xinfu City to deliver the message."
Wu Heng thought again and said, "The rest is up to you. If you need parts, have someone produce them. We need to boost our power fast. Keep trading with Central Station, and stress the pilot training issue."
"Understood."
"Alright then. Let's go."
Wu Heng stood and left the conference room with Gao Rong.
...
They went downstairs together.
Passing a room, Wu Heng knocked. "Zhao Yanqiu, are you ready?"
"Ready," came the reply from inside.
Moments later, the door opened and Zhao Yanqiu stepped out, dragging a large suitcase.
He'd discussed it with Xiaoxiao that morning—they decided to take Zhao Yanqiu along.
First, mother and daughter had been apart for a long time and missed each other. Second, he wanted to observe Zhao Yanqiu's class progression.
Hoping to find a breakthrough to resolve Xiaoxiao's [Unfinished Business].
Unlike Glenda...
Glenda clearly knew her wish. Xiaoxiao's goal was vague.
Keeping her mother close might help.
"Chief, Manager Gao," Zhao Yanqiu greeted them.
Wu Heng grabbed her luggage and stored it in his space ring.
Then he said, "Let's go. The truck's waiting outside."
The three of them walked to the gate.
Wu Heng and Zhao Yanqiu boarded the truck.
They said goodbye to Gao Rong, and the truck left for the train station.
Once aboard the train, they headed for Binhai City.
...
Three days later, at noon.
Wu Heng arrived at Sanfu Port with Zhao Yanqiu and his skeleton attendants.
It had probably rained the night before; puddles were still visible around the port.
But it made the whole area look cleaner.
He briefly introduced the place to Zhao Yanqiu, then they headed to the central base hotel.
Inside the hotel, he arranged a room for Zhao Yanqiu.
He waited in the conference room. Qi Hancai soon entered.
"You're back!" Qi Hancai smiled.
"Yeah. Everything fine here?" Wu Heng asked.
Qi Hancai replied, "Nothing major. The skeleton army continues expanding outward. Convoys shuttle back and forth daily, bringing supplies and survivors. The base population is nearing a hundred."
"Nice. You're the one I trust most with the base."
Qi Hancai laughed, "Not at all. I haven't done much."
Wu Heng continued, "As long as the base is fine. What about those two Korean navy guys?"
"Their daily task is to teach skeletons how to operate ships and perform onboard repairs and maintenance," Qi Hancai said.
"Tell them to come here."
"Got it." Qi Hancai grabbed the radio and sent someone to the port to fetch them.
The two chatted a bit.
A knock came, and the two Korean navy men walked in.
Seeing Wu Heng seated, they stiffened and immediately bowed their heads.
Wu Heng asked directly, "The escort ship was moved to another port. Why can't the anti-air missiles lock onto targets?"
The Storm Pirates were easily destroyed, but Philipa had sent back some information.
Among it: the anti-air missiles couldn't target harpies.
In the end, skeletons had to use rifles to shoot down flying units.
The outcome was fine, but Wu Heng still found it a shame the weapons were unusable.
So today, this was his first question.
The two looked at each other, and one cautiously asked, "Chief, what kind of target are you referring to?"
"Think of it as a mutated flying beast," Wu Heng replied.
They thought for a bit and said, "Chief, it's probably due to electromagnetic waves. Radar works like a bat—emitting waves that bounce back from objects. It's both a transmitter and receiver. Based on the wave differences, it determines shape and location. To avoid bird interference, it's designed not to lock onto such targets."
"Can you adjust it to lock onto them?" Wu Heng asked.
The man shook his head, "I can't."
He looked at the other.
The other also shook his head, "Me neither. The ship's equipment is pre-set. We're not allowed to change it."
Wu Heng thought again and asked, "Are there other systems that can quickly track such flying targets?"
"Yes. You can install a shipborne CIWS—7-barrel Gatling cannon, 4,200 rounds per minute. It can shred planes, missiles, or your mutated beasts. Especially beasts—their flight speed is definitely slower than missiles," the man replied.
Wu Heng had seen CIWS on military TV channels.
Extremely fast rate of fire, meant for defense.
He had some autocannons too, but they were manually operated—used to destroy pirate ships.
This sounded much more powerful.
"Does this port have them?" Wu Heng asked.
"No, but there's a military port where ship weapons can be replaced."
Wu Heng raised a brow—an unexpected surprise.
"Are there escort ships too?"
"Normally yes, but I'm not sure if they're docked."
Wu Heng looked to Qi Hancai. "Give him the map and mark the location."
Qi Hancai handed over the map.
The two men studied it and marked a spot.
...
Guild Headquarters.
The long corridor was empty and dim, giant stone pillars supporting the dome, with yellow glowstones on the walls casting a soft light.
A middle-aged man in a black suit with a stern face walked steadily to the door.
He knocked lightly.
The door slowly opened, revealing a lavishly furnished room.
Red carpet covered the floor, black velvet curtains hung to the ground, blocking out sunlight.
In the center was a black coffin, its lid tightly closed.
The man bowed slightly toward it and said softly, "Miss, the latest issue of the Gold-Silver Island newspaper has arrived. The detective story has been updated. Also, Island Lord Wu Heng sent you a special gift."
