Chapter 10 - The Quiet Night

Who am I without love? Who am I without the people who call me friends? I wonder to myself every day if this feeling I've been carrying will ever end. Will I be alone? Will I find the truths within myself? Will I be able to handle the feeling of letting go?

The dark streets were lit by the city lights. A silent but chill feeling lingered over the paths and streets. The moon was a crescent, shallow and pale, and the wind was calm. All the birds were asleep. Only a few cars and people moved through the city of darkness and light. The feeling was calm. Drunks paraded and stumbled, brushing past those who wished only to go home.

Some wondered about this quiet feeling. Was it the city itself? Or the people? Or was it the darkness that weighed down those who fell into their beds, cars, and homes? Beneath the city streets, a boy walked alongside his brother and sister.

That was what the boy felt—he felt like he had his family, and that was all he needed.

Ash walked down a path he had known since he was a little child. The street was silent and calm. Ahead of him, Aurora and Jordan walked, holding their bikes beside them, just like him. They had stopped cycling because of how dark it was getting.

Ash had always loved the feeling of silence. It made him feel calm and at peace. Sometimes, he walked a little slower, as if trying not to hear his own footsteps, like he was hovering above the ground while still moving.

"Come forward, Ash, help me with this conversation. We're talking about football, and this bum thinks Mac is the best player…" Aurora said.

"What are you on about? HE is… right, Ash?" Jordan looked to him for support.

Ash looked at them both, and for some reason, he started to laugh.

"Ha ha ha… Jordan, I can't say he's a bad player, but the best?" Ash said, wiping tears from laughing.

"What's so funny…" Jordan asked, a little annoyed.

"Nothing, just… you both are funny," Ash said, trying to cover his smile.

"Oh really?" Aurora said, not having it when he didn't back her up.

"You want to see something funny… Aaa!" Jordan shouted, going in for a tackle on Ash.

Ash and Jordan went back and forth until both of them fell. Soon, laughter echoed down the city street—two boys and a girl having fun.
