Interestingly, because most romcom anime are set in schools or within Japan's typically reserved culture, each of these stages is often treated as a major milestone that can take dozens of episodes, or even several seasons, just to reach.
The common progression of relationships in romcom anime, along with the unique characteristics of each stage, generally consists of several phases:
First comes the courtship and first-date stage. This is the initial gateway after the two characters begin realizing their feelings or officially start dating. First dates are usually filled with extraordinary awkwardness, where even choosing an outfit or deciding on a meeting place can trigger massive panic for the protagonist.
Second comes the hand-holding stage. To viewers in the real world, holding hands might be an ordinary and casual gesture. However, in the world of romcom anime, it is an incredibly sacred and thrilling moment. Characters often experience tremendous inner conflict just from trying to touch each other's fingertips. There is even a legendary joke among fandoms that hand-holding scenes in romcom anime feel far more "over-the-top" and cause faster heartbeats than the kissing scenes themselves, complete with visual effects showing their faces turning as red as boiled crabs.
Third comes the first-name stage. In Japanese culture, directly calling someone by their given name without using their family name or an honorific such as -san or -kun signifies a relationship that has become extremely close, intimate, and exclusive.
Fourth comes the first-kiss stage. This is the crowning achievement of most mainstream romcom anime. Many romcom titles actually choose to end immediately after their main characters share their first kiss, because a kiss is regarded as the symbol marking the end of their romantic struggle. Unfortunately, these first-kiss scenes are often ruined by various clichéd external factors. For example, a friend suddenly interrupting and destroying the mood, fireworks becoming too loud, or one of the characters suddenly fainting on the spot from overwhelming embarrassment.
Fifth comes the sex stage. There is not much to discuss about this phase. It is rarely shown explicitly in standard romcoms and is usually conveyed through subtle symbolism and implication. For example, the camera suddenly shifting toward a window, curtains slowly closing, a pile of clothes lying messily on the floor, or a scene the following morning where the two wake up in the same bed amid an awkward yet sweet atmosphere.
However, reality and the fictional world of anime are obviously worlds apart. Charlie was more focused on the reality of the life he was currently living, and he had never applied his superficial understanding of anime tropes to the people around him.
In short, what Charlie's actions meant was that he had gone through stages one through four and immediately jumped to stage five after Astraea's confession!

Then Astraea pulled her lips back and gently wrapped Charlie in her embrace.

Astraea kissed Charlie's cheek, stood up, and slowly began removing her clothes one by one.

"...Well, I suppose it can't be helped..." Astraea surrendered to that gaze, her whispered breath accompanying a faint, resigned smile.
Finally, she removed her underwear while Charlie watched.
"You're beautiful... Goddess Astraea..." Charlie whispered again, admiration filling his voice.
Astraea revealed her fully naked body to Charlie.
Her beautiful skin, her captivating proportions, and her perfectly shaped breasts—neither too large nor too small, just the right size. The dim glow inside the room further highlighted every breath-taking curve and line of her body, creating an aura of supreme elegance and intimacy.
Astraea embraced Charlie once more and collapsed onto the bed, lying on top of him.
The warmth of Astraea's body now merged completely with Charlie's, conveying the rapid beating of her heart.
