Evangeline found the shift in Freja's attitude unmistakable. Only moments ago, the woman had regarded her with a restrained, polite smile. But when her eyes settled on Adalyn, that softness thinned into something cooler. It wasn't outright hostility, nor was it friendliness. It felt measured, like someone who was determining one's worth.
"I see," Freja said smoothly, her gaze resting on Adalyn a moment longer than necessary. "Mr. Glass must be the gentleman who sold his land to relocate to Salestas, if I am not mistaken?"
Adalyn's brows lifted, genuine surprise flashing across her features before she let out a light, breathy laugh. "Oh my, you are indeed correct. But that is news I have scarcely mentioned, even among relatives. However did you come to know of it?"
"Well," Freja replied evenly, "my husband is Eros. I continue to use my maiden name, but his family name is Lane. Eros Lane."
