Alice felt like her life had collapsed in a single week. First came the breakup. Then came the suspension.
The combination left her exhausted in a way she couldn't explain to anyone. Every morning she woke up feeling heavy, as if someone had piled bricks on her chest while she slept. She spent most of her days in her room, staring at textbooks she wasn't really reading and scrolling endlessly through social media without seeing anything.
Her mother noticed immediately.
"Alice, why aren't you getting ready for school?"
Alice kept her eyes on her phone.
"I don't want to go."
"That's not an answer."
"I just don't."
Her mother folded her arms.
"Did something happen?"
"No."
"Did somebody hurt you?"
"No."
"Are you in trouble?"
"No."
The questions kept coming.
Alice knew her mother was worried, but she couldn't bring herself to explain everything. She didn't want to talk about Melvin. She didn't want to talk about the suspension. She didn't want to relive every humiliating detail.
Most of all, she didn't want another headache.
"I'm unhappy," Alice finally said. "I just want to stay home."
Her mother sighed.
"You can't hide in your room forever."
"I'm not hiding."
"Then what are you doing?"
Alice looked away. The argument escalated from there. Voices were raised. Doors were nearly slammed. At some point her mother simply gave up.
"Fine," she said. "Stay home."
That was it. No more questions. No more concern. No more attempts to understand. Her mother walked away. For some reason, that hurt even more. Alice sat alone in her room afterward, staring at her desk. Maybe she should have been grateful. She got exactly what she wanted. No questions. No pressure. No school. Yet all she could think was that she wished her mother had tried a little harder. Just a little.
A few days later, Alice was trying to focus on her studies when her phone vibrated. An Instagram message request. Unknown account. She almost ignored it. Then she saw the image. Her stomach dropped. The photo showed Melvin and Emily standing together at a summer fair. Emily's arm was wrapped around him. Melvin was leaning close. The angle made them look intimate. A second image appeared. This one was worse. A selfie. The two of them hugging. Kissing. Alice froze. For several seconds she simply stared at the screen.
No. This had to be fake. AI-generated. Edited. Manipulated. People could make anything nowadays.
Then she looked closer. The background wasn't random. She recognized it. The Ferris wheel. The food stalls. The decorations. The summer fair in Melvin's neighborhood. The one from a few months ago. Her heartbeat quickened. Before she could process it, another message arrived. And another. And another. Screenshots. Conversations. Text messages between Emily and Melvin. Alice opened them with trembling fingers. The texts were intimate. At least on Emily's side. Emily constantly tried to keep conversations going. She flirted. She complimented him. She searched for excuses to talk. Melvin's responses, however, were strangely cold. Short. Distant. Sometimes he took hours to reply. Other times he barely responded at all. The more Alice read, the more confused she became. If they had really been together, why did Melvin seem so uninterested? If he was uninterested, what's the point of these messages anyway?
The messages continued arriving. The unknown sender clearly wanted her to keep reading. Wanted her to feel angry. Humiliated. Betrayed. Alice suddenly stopped. A cold feeling crawled down her spine.
Who was sending this? And why?
She blocked the account immediately. Afterward she spent nearly an hour trying to identify the sender. She dug through profiles. Checked usernames. Searched connections. Tried every trick she knew. She failed miserably. The account vanished like smoke. Still, a disturbing thought remained. This wasn't the first time something strange had happened. Before this, rumors had spread about Melvin. Cruel rumors. Ridiculous rumors. The kind designed specifically to make someone a target. Someone had worked hard to turn people against him. Alice couldn't prove it. But deep inside, she felt that whoever sent those messages had been targeting Melvin for a long time. Maybe even both of them.
The next day she returned to school. Everyone expected drama. Everyone expected tears. Everyone expected confrontation. Instead, Alice surprised them all. She didn't confront Emily. Not once. She didn't confront Melvin either. The moment she entered the classroom she behaved as if nothing unusual had happened. She greeted everyone normally. She talked with Sophia. She talked with Grace. She even talked with Emily. Eventually the topic emerged naturally.
"So..." Sophia said carefully. "You and Melvin?"
Alice nodded.
"We broke up."
Emily's expression changed almost instantly. A flash of something crossed her face. Disappointment? Shock? Alice couldn't tell. Sophia leaned forward.
"What happened?"
Grace looked curious too.
Alice thought about all the possible answers. The truth was complicated. The easiest version escaped her lips.
"The relationship wasn't working."
Nobody spoke.
"He didn't want me getting hurt because of him," Alice continued. "Things were becoming difficult."
Sophia nodded sympathetically. Grace accepted the explanation. Emily stayed unusually quiet. None of them pressed further. The conversation moved on. But Alice didn't let the matter go. For the next month she watched carefully. She monitored Emily's behavior. She checked social media. She looked for signs. Messages. Comments. Photos. Anything suspicious. Nothing appeared. Emily and Melvin rarely interacted. When Alice eventually checked the old screenshots again, she noticed something important. The final conversation between Emily and Melvin had happened five months ago. Five months. No recent messages. No hidden interactions. No secret relationship. The evidence pointed toward a different conclusion.
Emily had tried to get close to Melvin. Melvin had given her the cold shoulder. Eventually the conversations died. That was all. The realization didn't make Alice feel better. But it did calm one of her fears. At least she hadn't been cheated on. A few weeks later the school sports festival arrived.
Most students were absent from practice because they weren't participating. Only a handful remained. Alice joined soccer practice despite her lack of enthusiasm. Halfway through the session she slipped awkwardly while chasing the ball. Pain shot through her knee.
"Ow!"
She hit the ground. Within seconds Sophia and several other girls rushed over.
"You okay?"
"Can you stand?"
"Don't move too fast."
The injury wasn't serious. Just a nasty scrape. Still, the girls insisted on helping her get first aid. Afterward Alice sat alone on the bleachers, waiting for the throbbing in her knee to settle. A shadow appeared beside her. She looked up. Damian. The boy sat down awkwardly. Not too close. Not too far. Almost as if he had rehearsed the distance beforehand.
"Hey."
"Hey."
For a moment neither spoke.
Then Damian introduced himself properly. Despite being in the same school, they had never really talked. He seemed surprisingly shy. Alice found it amusing. The silence faded. They started discussing random things. School. Sports. Health. At one point Damian laughed.
"You're doing better now."
Alice frowned.
"Better than what?"
"The basketball incident."
Her eyes widened.
"Oh, don't remind me."
Months ago she'd gotten sick and thrown up spectacularly during practice. An event many students still remembered. Damian laughed. Alice laughed too. For a few minutes the conversation felt normal. Comfortable, even. Then Damian casually mentioned Melvin. The atmosphere changed instantly. Alice's smile weakened.
"So..." Damian said carefully. "How are you holding up after the breakup?"
Alice forced a shrug.
"I'm fine."
"You sure?"
"Yep."
He stared at her. Not convinced.
"Be honest."
Alice rolled her eyes. Something about his expression made her laugh. A genuine laugh. Maybe because pretending had become exhausting. Maybe because she was tired of carrying everything alone. Eventually she told him. Not every detail. Just enough lies to cover up Melvin's sexuality. The breakup. The complications. The aftermath. When she finished, Damian remained quiet. Then Alice looked directly at him.
"I want to ask you something."
"What?"
"Stop spreading rumors about Melvin."
His expression shifted immediately.
"What rumors?"
Alice almost laughed. The innocent act was terrible.
"Come on."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"You're literally the biggest gossip in the boys' group chat."
Damian looked offended. Alice wasn't buying it. She knew how information traveled through school. She knew who amplified stories. And she knew who enjoyed being in the middle of them. The conversation became more serious. Damian eventually admitted partial responsibility. But he defended himself too.
"It wasn't just me."
"Maybe not."
"Everybody was saying things."
Alice folded her arms.
"Then don't be everybody."
He blinked. The answer seemed to catch him off guard.
"You don't have to do something just because everyone else does."
Damian looked away. For a moment neither spoke. Then Alice softened slightly.
"You're smarter than that."
The compliment landed. She could tell. Eventually Damian sighed.
"Fine."
"Fine?"
"I'll stop."
"Good."
"No more gossip."
Alice smiled.
"Thank you."
A whistle sounded across the field. Soccer practice was resuming. Damian stood.
"I gotta go."
"Have fun."
"No promises."
He jogged away. Alice watched him disappear across the field. A few minutes later Sophia climbed onto the bleachers beside her. Her eyes sparkled immediately.
"What was that?"
Alice blinked.
"What was what?"
"You and Damian."
Alice nearly laughed.
Sophia leaned closer.
"Tell me."
A mischievous idea entered Alice's mind. She pointed toward the field.
"He proposed."
Sophia gasped.
Alice couldn't keep a straight face.
"And?"
"I rejected him."
Sophia's jaw nearly hit the floor. The ridiculous story spread surprisingly fast afterward. Alice even added more absurd details whenever someone asked. By the end of the day Damian's imaginary confession had become one of the funniest stories in their friend group. Part of her knew it was immature. Part of her didn't care. Life had become strange lately. Sometimes laughing at nonsense felt easier than dealing with reality.
As weeks passed, one truth remained unchanged. Alice and Melvin were over. There was no fixing it. No second chance. No reunion waiting around the corner. That chapter had ended. Yet despite everything that happened, Alice couldn't convince herself that Melvin had betrayed her. He hadn't cheated. He hadn't manipulated her. He hadn't abandoned her when she needed help. Even after their breakup, she remembered countless moments when he had stood beside her without hesitation. The rumors people spread never matched the person she knew. Maybe that was why she hated gossip so much. She had seen firsthand what it could do to someone. How easily a reputation could be destroyed. How quickly people chose entertainment over truth. Looking across the soccer field, she spotted Damian laughing with his teammates. A small smile appeared on her face. Hopefully he had learned something. Though knowing high school, Alice wasn't willing to bet money on it. Still, for the first time in weeks, the future didn't seem completely hopeless.
The pain was still there. The questions were still there. The memories were still there. But she was moving forward. One step at a time. And for now, that was enough.
