A commotion nearby drew the girls' attention. A stray dog had wandered too close to a group of local kids, and a few of them were throwing stones at it for fun. The poor thing yelped and tried to run, but the children only laughed.
Kiki reacted first. She bent, picked up two pebbles, and flicked them out with quick little snaps of her wrist. Both struck the incoming stones midair and knocked them away before they could hit the dog.
The local kids froze.
Before they could recover, Donna and Lauren stepped in front of the dog. Another two stones came flying, and this time the girls simply caught them with their bare hands.
The street went quiet.
Kiki frowned first. Her usually sweet face looked unexpectedly stern. "Why are you doing that? It didn't even bother you."
Donna opened her hand and let the stone drop to the ground with a little thud. "If you want to throw things, throw them at a tree. Not at something weaker than you."
