When Randolf gave his answer, Aldrian could sense that he did not entirely mean it. Deep inside, Randolf still held onto a trace of hope, or more accurately, doubt. When he ascended to the Second Heaven, he wanted to learn the truth himself and see whether what Aldrian said was truly real or not.
However, it could also be said that his heart had already begun to split apart with resignation. If the truth truly turned out to be exactly like what Aldrian had said, then he was already prepared to accept it.
