Chapter 2 - 1.2: First day in class

[A/N: The next chapter should be fun. Also, don't expect too much excitement in the beginning when all of this is starting. For now, I am sticking closely to the LN. Also, man dialogue is bulky in the books, huh?]

———————————————————

"Truly, how can they expect an individual such as myself to stand in line for an old man to ramble? Inferior boy, I am sure you agree," Were the first words out of Superior-boy when we entered the first year's hallway.

In normal circumstances, I would agree but mine are not. And so, I would listen and be listen carefully, not that I was gonna get anything useful, ugh, "Yes. It will be a waste of time."

"Say, inferior boy, what is your name?" Yeah, I would like to know too. For now, I turned my head to him, forced my eyes wide and let my lips hang loose.

He read my expression, "Ha! Don't be so surprised Inferior boy. You respect my superior existence, of course, I will ask your name."

"You just want a gofer don't you?" I asked him. He smiled as he shrugged and then pointed to the sign hanging off one of the rooms, "1-D inferior boy."

I nodded at him as we reached the door, "Thank you, Superior, won't have made it without you," well, maybe. He just gave a nod and he led us in and immediately upon entry, "This seems like a rather well-equipped classroom. It would appear to live up to people's expectations, hmm?"

Looking around the room, I searched for empty seats. There were quite a few but only two with 'men-names,' Kouenji and Heylel, on them as most of the class was already there, which made sense, he had led us here via the scenic path after all—something about taking a lay of the land.

I say that, it is not like he noticed anyone inside, he just went over to the seat labelled 'Kouenji' and sat. Then he pulled out a nail file from his bag and hummed while he treated his nails, though he did shoot a glance at me. Thanks to him, I knew my seat. Just behind him. Of course. Waking over I put my bag down and called out to the man, "So, which name do you prefer?"

He didn't turn to me, too busy with his routine apparently, "Whichever. Heylel-boy." He is never going to drop the 'boy,' is he?

I nodded, "Kouenji, it is then."

Sliding my bag over my desk, I started to peek through its contents properly, unlike the rush I was in on the bus but still, nothing, well, nothing interesting. It had textbooks.

Taking out the Math problem book, I flipped through it and looked through the problems. Thankfully, It was all stuff I knew and recognised, granted I haven't touched maths since I joined med school but hey, I just need some brushing up.

I repeated the process, and soon realised, that Japanese history and literature were gonna be spicy because I knew fuck all about either, well, other than the nukes and the war crimes, but I don't think anyone here appreciates either.

After a few minutes, the first bell rang. At that precise moment, a woman entered the classroom. She wore a suit and had delicate features. Her hair seemed long, and she'd tied it into a ponytail. She seemed dressed to oppress, "Ahem. Good morning to you, students. I'm the instructor for Class D. My name is Chiyabashira Sae. I usually teach Japanese history. However, at this school, we do not change classrooms for each grade. For the next three years, I will be acting as your homeroom teacher, so I hope to get to know all of you. It's a pleasure to meet you. The entrance ceremony will be in the gymnasium one hour from now, but first, I will distribute written materials with information about this school's special rules. I will also hand out the admissions guide."

The students in the front seats passed back the documents she handed to them.

And then I started reading, all students were required to live in dormitories located on school premises. Also, except for special cases, such as studying abroad, students were forbidden to contact anyone outside the school.

Even contact with your immediate family was forbidden without authorization. Naturally, leaving school grounds without permission was also strictly forbidden.

However, the campus also came equipped with many excellent facilities. With its karaoke spot, theatre, café, boutique, and more, you could easily compare this school to a small city. The campus is spread over more than 600,000 square meters. This school boasted another unique feature: the S System.

"I will now hand out your student ID cards. By using your card, you can access any of the facilities on campus, purchase goods from the store, and so on. It acts like a credit card. However, you must pay attention to the points that you spend. At this school, you can use your points to buy anything. Anything located on the school premises is available for purchase."

Our points, loaded onto our student ID cards, acted as a kind of currency. The lack of paper money would prevent many students' financial troubles. However, students needed to keep a watchful eye on their spending habits. At any rate, the school provided these points free of charge.

"Your student cards can be used simply by swiping them through the machine scanner. The method is simple, so you shouldn't get confused. Points are automatically deposited into your account on the first of every month. You should all have received 100,000 points already. Keep in mind that one point is worth one yen. No further explanation should be necessary."

The classroom erupted. And my mind just blanked—we had just received a 100,000-yen monthly allowance from the school upon admission. Fucking bonkers. What would that be? About seven hundred USD? For a school with no tuition? The fuck. There are forty students here, so thirty-six thousand per class. Then four classes, what's that? About a hundred and forty thousand. For the three grade levels that would be about four hundred thousand.

"Shocked by the amount of points you've been given? This school evaluates its students' talents. Everyone here has passed the entrance examination, which itself speaks to your value and potential. The amount you've received reflects the evaluation of your worth. You can use your points without restraint. After graduation, however, all of your points return to the school. Because it's impossible to exchange your points for cash, there's no advantage to saving them. Once points have been deposited into your account, it's up to you how to spend them. Do as you like. If you don't want to spend your points, you may transfer them to someone else. However, extorting money from your peers is not allowed. This school monitors bullying very carefully."

As bewilderment spread among the students, Chiyabashira-sensei looked over the room.

"Well, it appears no one has any questions. I hope that you enjoy your time here as students."

None of my classmates, other than Kouenji, had any cool after that announcement. I did not either.

"Thoughts Kouenji?"

He took a second to reply. "Too early to say, Heylel boy, too early. They might have recognised my value already but then why would they give all of you the same points as me? Don't you agree?"

Narcissism aside, "You are correct in that," some students are plain better than others, so, it is rather strange to give all of us the same points. She did say, 'This school evaluates its students' talents.' Though, "This could just be a baseline right?"

"What did I say Heylel boy? Too early to know. But yes."

"Hey, hey! Do you want to check out a store with me on our way back? Let's do some shopping!" one girl cried.

"Sure. With this much, we can buy anything. I'm so glad I got into this school!" another said.

Once the teacher was gone, the newly rich students began to grow restless.

"Everyone, can you please listen to me for a moment?" A voice cut through the chatter, a boy with a face that looked out of a commercial raised his hands. Though with his neat and straight uniform, you would make you think otherwise.

"Starting today, we're all going to be classmates. Therefore, I think it'd be good for us to introduce ourselves and become friends as soon as possible. We still have some time until the entrance ceremony. What do you say?"

"Agreed! After all, we still don't know a thing about each other, not even our names," someone shouted.

After the ice had broken, the previously hesitant students began to speak and taking the lead was the Commercial man, "My name's Hirata Yousuke. Back in junior high, lots of people called me Yousuke. Feel free to use my first name! I guess my hobby is sports in general, but I especially like soccer. I'm planning on playing soccer here, too. Nice to meet you!"

So, mister popular and communicative?

Leaning back into my deck I waited as he directed the flow of the class, "Well then, I'd like everyone to introduce themselves, starting from the front. Is that okay?"

First up then, "M-my name is…Inogashira Ko-Ko…" She said as she fumbled her into for a good minute until she managed to get out, "My name is Inogashira…Kokoro. Um, my hobby is sewing. I'm pretty good at knitting. I-It's nice to meet you all," with a lot of coaxing from the class.

Then came, "I'm Yamauchi Haruki. I competed in table tennis during elementary school, and in junior high, I was the ace player on our baseball team. I was number four. I got hurt during the inter-high school championships, though, and I'm undergoing rehab now. Nice to meet you." Sure.

"Well then, I'm next, aren't I?" The cheerful girl who stood up was one of those who'd told Inogashira to go slowly and calm down.

She was also the same girl who'd helped out the elderly woman on the bus that morning. "My name is Kushida Kikyou. None of my friends from junior high made it to this school, so I'm alone here. I'd like to get to know all of your names and faces right away and become friends as soon as possible!"

While most of the students had only said a few words of introduction, Kushida continued to talk.

"My first goal is to become friends with everyone. So, after we're finished with introductions, I'd love for you to share your contact information with me!"

I would rather not pollute my contact list but she might be a useful bridge when communicating with other classmates, which means I will give her my info.

"So, after school or during vacations, I want to make all sorts of memories with lots of people. Please feel free to invite me to lots and lots of events! Anyway, I've talked for a long time, so I'll end my introduction here."

And on, and on we went, the next notable thing happening when, Hirata called upon the dude with red firey hair, which pissed him off for some reason.

"What, are we a bunch of little kids or something? I don't need to introduce myself. People who want to do that can go ahead. Just leave me out of it." The red-haired guy scowled at Hirata. He had quite a presence, his attitude intense and overpowering.

"I can't force you to introduce yourself, of course. However, I don't think that getting along with your classmates is a bad thing. If I've made you uncomfortable, I apologize."

When Hirata bowed his head, some of the girls glared at the guy with red hair."Isn't it fine to introduce yourself?" one of them snapped.

"Yeah, yeah!" Another added.

It seems Mr Popular is Mr Popular, what a surprise.

"Shut it. I don't care. I didn't come here to make friends." The guy with red hair got up from his seat. It seemed he had no intention of getting to know anyone.

Several other students followed suit and left the classroom together, to which he responded, "They're not a bad bunch. It's my fault. I was being selfish and made people do this."

"No way. You didn't do anything wrong, Hirata-kun. Let's just leave those guys be, okay?"

Onto the next then, "I'm Ike Kanji. I love girls, and I hate pretty boys. I'm currently in the market for a new girlfriend. It's nice to meet you! All the better if you're a cutie or a beauty!"

"Wow. You are so cool, Ike-kun," one girl said, in a completely emotionless voice, well, good luck getting a girlfriend.

"Seriously? Seriously? Oh, man. I mean, I thought that I wasn't bad or anything, but…heh heh." Ike thinking that she was being serious blushed. Instantly, the girls started to laugh."Oh, wow. He's cute, huh, everyone? He's looking for a girlfriend!"

Ike continued to jovially go along with the teasing. He didn't seem like a bad guy, though. Next up was  Kouenji. While inspecting his bangs in a hand mirror, he combed his hair."Excuse me, can you introduce yourself?" Hirata asked.

"Hmph. Fine." He smirked like an aristocrat, displaying his impudent attitude. As he shifted in his seat, I thought he might leave, but Kouenji placed both of his legs on his desk and introduced himself.

"My name is Kouenji Rokusuke. As the sole male heir to the Kouenji conglomerate group, I will soon be tasked with carrying Japan into the future. I sincerely look forward to making your acquaintance, ladies. And I guess Heylel boy."

Wow, I exist. Thank you for validating my existence.

"No need to thank me."

Oh, piss off.

After hearing that he was rich, some of the girls looked at him with sparkling eyes, while others regarded Kouenji as if he were nothing more than a weirdo. Naturally. "Starting today, I will mercilessly punish anyone who makes me uncomfortable. Please exercise proper precaution so that you may avoid that."

"Um, Kouenji-kun. What exactly do you mean when you say, 'anyone who makes me uncomfortable'?" asked Hirata, who looked uneasy at the word 'punish.'

"I meant exactly what I said. If asked to give an example, well… I would say I hate ugly things, for instance. So, if I saw something ugly, I would do just as I said." He flipped his long, flowing bangs.

"Ah, thank you. I will be careful then." He said before his eyes turned to me.

Before he could call me out I stood up and with my life turned to a light smile, "Name's Heylel, just that is fine. I hope to get along with all of you," and sat down.

Hirata tilted his head a little, "So, should we call you Heylel?" I nodded at that.

"Oh, you are friends with Kouenjie?" A girl who was swooning over him asked.

"Maybe?" I shrugged to which the man himself answered, "He is my gofer."

"Oh, so you are friends!" She cheered which got a giggle out of others.

"Well then, time for the next person. Can you please introduce yourself?" I turned to the guy behind me.

"Huh?" He was caught off guard. Probably daydreaming.

The chair rattled as he stood. "Um. Well, my name is Ayanokouji Kiyotaka. And, uh, I don't have any special skills or anything. I'll do my best to get along with all of you. It's, uh, nice to meet you." He instinctively buried his head in his hands.

The introduction itself wasn't bad, but what came before and after was…oof.

Still, together with everyone I gave him pity claps as Hirtae said, "It's nice to meet you, Ayanokouji-kun. I always want to be friends with everyone, just like you. Let's both do our best, okay?"

Yeah, good luck man, it's rough out there for introverts.
