The two of them left the cafeteria together and started walking toward the classroom. For some reason, Zhang Danlin kept deliberately squeezing toward Hao Jian. At first, Hao Jian could step a bit to the right to give some space, but then she would just move a bit closer again.
As Hao Jian kept moving to the right, Zhang Danlin kept crowding in, until he was pushed all the way to the edge of the path. If he kept yielding, he'd end up walking through the flower bushes on the side of the road. With no other choice, he stopped giving in, and they walked along with just about a fist's distance between them.
Everyone has a personal space, invisible but perceptible. Like an acquaintance and a stranger, if two people aren't familiar with each other, they won't stand too close. If they're friends, the distance is closer, and if they're close friends, there's practically no sense of distance at all.
