Chapter 367 - Chapter 364 ~ No promises, Boruto

Ryu asked, "Join my family, Arata."

The dining room went quiet. Arata stared at Ryu. Then he blinked once, as if the sentence had reached him but refused to settle into place. But he understood the invitation. There had been rumours that Ryu Hamura had started pulling strange children into the Hamura clan.

"What can someone achieve, Rye?" he asked. "You want me as a ninja? I am better at mopping floors... I am not even fit for that."

A few eyes shifted between him and Ryu.

"I fall asleep at jobs. I get names wrong. I annoy people without meaning to. How am I supposed to become a ninja? I would not even pass the academy fitness round."

Ryu did not answer immediately. He watched the boy for half a second longer, weighing what was fear, what was reason, and what was merely habit built from years of being dismissed before he had even finished speaking.

"There is no academy exam for joining this family," Ryu said at last. "I have a pact with the Lord Daimyo."

That made more than Arata look at him.

Ryu leaned back slightly in his chair, his voice steady. "This world is wrong in too many places. One person cannot fix it alone. Not with money or power. Not with inventions. Not with good intentions." His gaze moved across the table, then returned to Arata. "So I need companions. People like the ones sitting here. People whom the ordinary system misjudges or throws away."

Arata frowned. "And what does someone like me do in something that big, Mr... Roy?" he asked.

Kaori was the first to answer. "Being pitiful does not make him mission-ready, Boss," she said. "His sleep disorder is a big risk for himself and others."

Kohinata followed before the silence could reform. "Yes," he said. "If he falls asleep at the wrong moment, he gets someone else killed."

Arata gave a small nod, like both of them had only said the obvious. "That is what I mean, Mr Roo," he said. He said it with complete, flat sincerity. There was no irony in his voice, only the blunt logic of a boy who had already accepted his own uselessness.

Dan said nothing.

A plate clattered lightly near the far end of the table when Jiyuu set it down too hard.

Arata winced. Not from the plate itself. From the sound.

Ryu's eyes narrowed. The boy's gaze had tracked the noise in a way that was slightly wrong. Not toward the object first. Toward something about it. Ryu noticed the detail instantly.

Ryu turned his head. He asked his grandfather, "Did you notice something when he fell asleep?"

Dan thought back, even though no one told him which moment Ryu meant. There had been more than one. "At the door, he stayed standing," Dan said. "At the table, he stayed upright. And he did not even drop the spoon."

Ryu nodded once. "Exactly."

Arata looked between them, confused.

Ryu tapped one finger lightly against the table. "Your body is adapting to your condition," he said. "Most people who drop into sleep that suddenly would collapse harder than that. But you don't. Your posture and grip hold when you sleep. Your body is retaining a level of consciousness and functioning. Your body has built a protective pattern, a kind of muscle memory, just like me."

"I have muscle memory... Just like you?" Arata asked.

"Yes," Ryu said. "Mine is different. For me it is almost redundant. For you, it may be the reason you are not constantly splitting your skull open on the floor."

The realisation landed. Arata finally understood why he had never been injured during his sudden drops.

Ryu watched the boy, the way his hands still moved toward food without self-consciousness even while the entire room was staring at them. "Just like Rock Lee... potential for Drunken Fist and Sleepy Taijutsu," Ryu thought.

"If the reflex arc is stable enough, the pattern can be trained further to a combat level. I can teach you to fight while sleeping," Ryu said.

This time the room did react. Naruto's mouth opened. Kaia stopped moving. Kohinata's eyes narrowed, not in dismissal now, but in calculation.

Arata stared at Ryu as though deciding whether this was a joke so advanced he lacked the education to understand it.

Dan exhaled through his nose. "If you are saying it," Dan said, "then you have already thought it through."

"I have thought through enough to know the possibility is real," Ryu said. "With time, with the Fuinjutsu we are developing, and with the right training, that [Muscle Memory] can be sharpened into [Sleepy Taijutsu] and maybe even [Sleepy Ninjutsu] and [Sleepy Genjutsu]."

Kohinata folded his arms. "If his body keeps fighting while the mind drops out..." he said slowly, "then this is not ordinary."

"No," Ryu said. "It is not."

Kohinata replied, "I have seen taijutsu like this..."

Arata looked down at his own hands. He flexed them once, as though they might suddenly reveal something to him they had kept hidden all his life. "Even if that part is true," he said, "there is still everything else wrong with me."

"There is definitely something unusual going on in that head of yours," Ryu said. "Did you fall on it as a baby?"

Arata gave him a flat look. "Not very comforting or funny, Rue."

Ryu ignored the name. He had been watching something else anyway. Kaori had challenged him. Kohinata had challenged him. Half the table was studying the boy like an unstable scroll someone had brought indoors by mistake. Arata had kept eating. No visible tension in his shoulders. No defensive tightening in his chakra. No social shrinking.

"That is strange," Ryu thought. "No embarrassment in response, no social anxiety. No avoidance reflex. No meaningful anticipatory anxiety under group scrutiny."

Arata reached for another bite.

Ryu moved. The fork in his hand flashed down and struck the table between Arata's fingers with a sharp, clean sound.

Wood jolted. Kaori flinched. Naruto jerked so hard his bowl nearly slipped. Dan tensed but did not rise.

Arata only looked at the fork.

The room froze around that stillness. Ryu's gaze stayed on the boy's face. Nothing, no emotion, no panic. No delayed recoil either.

Ryu spoke without looking away from him. "Ms Kaori, did you sense his chakra?"

Kaori's eyes sharpened at once. "It didn't even flicker," she said. "His baseline is completely flat."

That drew everyone's attention harder than the fork had.

Ryu nodded slightly. "I guessed as much."

Arata looked down at the fork, then at Ryu. "Was that this... a test?" he asked.

"Yes," Ryu said.

"That seems rude," Toshiro said

Ryu replied, "A trained ninja should have reacted before the strike and an untrained civilian after it. You did neither. You understand danger. I can see that in your eyes. But your body is not processing the ordinary fear response properly."

Arata stared.

Kaori's gaze remained fixed on Arata. "No social spike either," she said quietly. "Nothing from the whole conversation. He has been under pressure since he entered the room."

"Yes," Ryu said. "That too."

Arata rubbed one eye. "I know when things are dangerous," he said. "I just... do not always feel it the way other people seem to."

Ryu believed him. That was the part most people would misunderstand. Arata was fearless, but he was not cold. His brain did not process the consequences of danger, but he still understood kindness. He knew how to treat people right, even if he did not know how to be afraid of them.

"Normally, in a case like this, the lack of fear and consequence-weighting can push people toward something close to sociopathy. They stop caring because they cannot feel the risk. Or maybe he is just too young, and I caught him before the world turned him into something worse. I just saved him from his fate," Ryu thought.

 *

Inside the seal, Minato watched the exchange with the cold, measured eye of a wartime commander.

"A soldier who cannot feel panic," Minato said quietly. "No hesitation under killing intent. No breaking formation when a jutsu lands too close. A mind that simply processes danger as information rather than fear."

Kushina frowned. "But without fear, he won't know when to run. He could get himself killed easily."

 *

Ryu's eyes shifted, almost by instinct, toward Naruto sitting beside him. He watched the blonde boy watching Arata without an ounce of the tension he usually carried around strangers. That explains the kindness towards Naruto. The village's rumours could not trigger avoidance in a brain that does not process social fear normally. For Arata, it is a neurological deficit. For Naruto... it was the first time someone just looked at him like a normal kid.

Arata looked at Ryu for a long second. Then he said, with complete seriousness, "The villagers are right, you are the smartest person in the village."

Ryu accepted the compliment with a small incline of his head.

Naruto pointed at himself and said, "I told you that."

Arata did not even look at him. "As if I would have believed a brat famous for pranking villagers."

That drew the laugh Toshiro had been holding back and finally loosened the room again.

Ryu pulled the fork free and set it aside. "You have several neurological anomalies layered over each other," he said. "Is there anything I have missed?"

Arata hesitated. Then he gave the smallest shrug. "I do not know how to say it properly, Mr Rou. For me, loud things are not just heard loud; they look loud too."

Everyone's attraction was drawn.

Kaori asked, "What do you mean?"

Arata spoke, "I can see loud things, like waves of colours coming off them."

Ryu did show genuine enthusiasm this time. As the part he had been working on for so long finally clicked into place, he rose from his seat. Dan could tell this was serious enough to make Ryu stand. They had entered a new dimension of strangeness.

Ryu lifted both hands and clapped once. The sharp sound cracked through the room. "What did you see?" he asked.

Arata answered without delay. "Colours," he said. "Waves coming out of your hands."

Every eye at the table went back to Ryu.

"Cross-sensory overlap. Auditory input mapped into visual patterning. Unrefined and involuntary, unlike my own visual overlays, but stable enough and with scope for improvements," Ryu thought. He almost smiled.

"You can see sound as colour," Ryu said.

Dan leaned forward slightly and asked, "Hearing and sight crossing over?"

"Yes," Ryu said. "His brain is blending sensory channels that should usually remain separate. For him, loud sound is not only heard but also felt and translated into visual information."

Kaori looked at Arata again, but now the look held fascination instead of objection.

Kohinata's attention sharpened for an entirely different reason. "If he can perceive sound like that consistently," Kohinata said, "that has battlefield value."

"More than that," Ryu said. His eyes had already shifted once toward Akihiro. The blind boy had been listening without moving, every word entering a silence more focused than any of the others understood. Ryu looked fully at him now. A spark moved through his thoughts.

"There it is. A bridge for him. Until now he had been trying to solve Akihiro's problem by pushing training, seals, and conceptual modelling toward the same end from his own side. But his mind was built wrong for that transfer. Too fast and powerful. Arata is different. Normal and human enough to map," Ryu thought.

Ryu looked back at the table.

Ryu continued, "If I can use our [InstinctGPT] seals to record how Arata's brain translates sound into visual information, then I can use that data and method in Akihiro's training. To build him a bridge of his working senses to his visualisation part of his brain. A way to convert input into usable perception more naturally."

 *

Minato's eyes widened slightly in the isolated space.

"He is not just treating a defect," Minato said, his voice laced with profound respect. "He is isolating the exact mechanics of a sensory disorder and weaponising it as a cure for someone else through that new fuinjutsu seal… amazing. Just when I thought this kid couldn't surprise me anymore."

The sheer ingenuity of that mind was staggering for the past Hokage.

 *

That silenced the room again, but this time for a different reason. Hope had weight too. Akihiro's hands moved before he could stop them, forming a quick, tight sequence of signs.

Dan's expression had gone very still.

Arata stared between them all. His grip on his spoon finally loosened. "I came here because I could not stay awake," he said. "How did I become useful to another person before becoming useful to myself?"

Ryu answered him without hesitation. "You were already useful to yourself," he said. "You just did not know how. Listen carefully. I would have helped you even if none of this existed. Even if you had no tactical value. Even if all you brought me was narcolepsy, wrong names, and other troubles."

Arata's eyes stayed on Ryu.

Ryu did not look away. "But you have a chance to help my blind brother there," Ryu said. "So I ask you again to join my family. Be my strength. Help yourself and help others reach their true potential. I will help you in this journey... trust me... you will become a fine ninja."

Arata took another bite. He chewed slowly this time. When he swallowed, the whole table was still watching him.

Arata only exhaled. He looked around the table at the faces watching him—not with pity or annoyance, but with genuine expectation. "Shoot," he said. "Fine. There is not much to lose for me anyway."

Ryu's mouth curved. For anyone else, the line would have sounded reckless. For Arata, it sounded almost honest enough to count as trust.

"Welcome to the Hamura family," Ryu said.

Naruto lit up at once and said, "Try to remember my name this time."

Arata turned to him with complete seriousness. "No promises, Boruto."

Naruto groaned. The table laughed.

 *

Inside the seal, Kushina giggled softly, fully understanding the boy's struggle. "Boruto... his disorder certainly comes up with creative variations for Naruto."

Minato just nodded with a warm smile, watching their son laugh with his new family.

 *

It was a quiet, domestic moment. And somewhere outside the boundaries of time and the seal, the universe enjoyed its own private joke. Neither the adults at the table, nor the two legendary souls watching from within, had any idea that the sleepy boy with the broken brain had just perfectly named their future grandson.

And for the first time since he had stepped through the door, Arata did not look like a boy waiting to be thrown back out.
