Chapter 204 - Ch 202 - The Onsen Incident (2)

Luffy groaned, the sound echoing in the steamy hollow. "It's about… boundaries, Yamato. I've had women join me in baths before, you know. Hina, Gion, Doll, Kuina… heck, even that crazy Kujaku has joined me in the bath... But they actually know what it means to do that... They all know what they want... You can say that there's a… a game to it. A sort of understanding."

He looked at her, his eyes serious. "But you... you're innocent. You don't see the game. And because you don't see it, me sitting here, seeing you like this…"

He gestured again, his hand sweeping over her form barely concealed by the clear, steaming water. "…it feels wrong. It feels like I'm taking advantage, even though I'm not doing anything."

The onsen was silent except for the gentle lap of water and the distant call of a night bird.

Luffy's words hung in the steam, raw and honest.

Yamato's defiant pout slowly faded. Her fierce, protective anger alongside the instinct to defend her chosen identity dissipated as his true meaning seeped in.

He was neither rejecting Oden nor he was mocking her.

He was just trying to protect her by looking out for her in a way she'd never considered.

And then, the final blow landed.

"I like you, Yamato," He said, his voice softening. "I like your character, your spirit, your innocence, your loyalty… It's amazing. And that's why I am even thinking that I want you on my ship as my nakama."

Thump-Thump!

THUMP-THUMP-THUMP!

Yamato's heart, which had been pounding with indignation, suddenly kicked into a frantic, galloping rhythm against her ribs. It was so loud she was sure he could hear it over the water. A warmth, entirely separate from the onsen's heat, flooded her chest and rushed up her neck to her cheeks. The blush was sudden and vivid, painting her fair skin a soft, rosy pink under the moon's gaze.

She looked vulnerably flustered and very adorable.

Her gaze dropped to the swirling water between them. The words 'I want you on my ship' played on a loop in her mind, each repetition sending a new, delicious shiver through her.

For years, her world had been the prison of Onigashima and the idol of a dead legend.

Now, here was a person, Monkey D. Luffy, offering her the open sea and a place beside him. And he was doing it while blushing for her, trying to shield her from a world's harsh perceptions she'd always ignored.

She took a slow, deep breath, the rise and fall of her chest making the water tremble. When she looked up, her eyes were no longer just innocent or defiant. There was a new, dawning awareness in them.

It was a flicker of understanding about the space between men and women, and why this particular man was so flustered by her.

A slow, different kind of smile that was softer, more feminine, touched her lips.

"Alright, Luffy," She said, her voice quieter now, almost a murmur lost in the steam. "I… I think I understand. Well, I don't understand all of it… but I understand enough."

She paused, the playful glint returning, but tempered. "But you said 'next time.' Does that mean… you'll bathe with me again?"

Luffy stared at her, at the blush on her cheeks, at the new, knowing light in her eyes, and at the way the white cloth clung to her hips, darker now where the water soaked it.

Her chaotic, naive energy had shifted into something warmer, more intimate, and infinitely more dangerous.

He let out a long, shaky sigh that was half exasperation, half something else entirely. A helpless grin spread across his face.

"Shishi… You're impossible, Yamato."

Luffy's smile was a slow, tempered thing. He shook his head, not in rejection, but in sheer, bewildered self-preservation.

'It's not that she isn't… something. Gods, just look at her.'

The steam clung to her skin, the narrow white strip of cloth dark with moisture, hinting at secrets beneath the waterline. She was a vision of raw, untamed allure and it was a fact his body was acutely, annoyingly aware of.

But his mind was a ledger.

'Hina, Gion, Doll, Kuina... Even that naughty Kujaku has her moments…'

The list that he knew with unshakable certainty, would only grow longer.

Yamato was a little complicated. She was a magnificent, fierce, walking paradox. Her Oden act, while endearing, was a bucket of ice water on any rising mood.

It felt strange, wrong almost, to look at that fiercely innocent, determined face and think the kinds of thoughts currently simmering in the back of his own skull.

'Well, no need to make haste... When she's on the ship with me…' He mused, the idea sending a different kind of heat through him. '...at close quarters. She'll learn and see a lot of things. There'll be time for… everything. No need to rush this now.'

His thoughts, treacherous and strategic, slid away from the warrior in the water beside him and towards a different Wano beauty.

Kozuki Hiyori.

Now, there was a woman who understood the rules of the game. She was a princess, raised in courts, trained in the subtle arts of gratitude. With Kaido gone and her throne restored, she would owe a considerable debt to her liberator.

His mind painted vivid, naughty pictures: Hiyori in silken robes offering a private cup of sake in the royal chambers, her eyes downcast but promising; a private audience to discuss the kingdom's future, her hands trembling as she loosened an obi…

Ahem!

A sharp, pointed cough shattered his delicious reverie.

Luffy jerked his body, the water sloshing.

Yamato was staring at him, her head tilted. The soft, flustered blush from before was gone, replaced by a strange, sharp intensity in her amber eyes.

"Luffy," She said, her voice cutting through the steam. "Just what are you thinking about so hard? Your face was all… weird."

'Oh no... I was caught red handed.'

"Shishishi!" He laughed, a loud, forced bark that echoed off the stones. He scratched the back of his neck vigorously, a classic tell for a fib. "Nothin'! Just… uh… thinking about battle plans for Kaido! Yeah!"

Yamato's eyes narrowed. She didn't believe him for a second. A hot, sour twist coiled in her gut, a feeling she couldn't name.

"Hmph,"

She let out a soft, dismissive snort before looking away, but the strange jealousy lingered, a bitter tang in the warm, humid air.

Seeking to redirect the awkward energy, Luffy blurted out, "So… you're really set on joining my crew, huh?"

The change worked and Yamato's expression snapped back to radiant enthusiasm.

"Of course!" She declared, splashing the water with a fist. "I've dreamed of leaving this cage my whole life! Sailing with you… it'll be the greatest adventure!"

The word 'nakama' thrummed between them, potent and warm.

Luffy's grin turned genuine, edged with a captain's promise. "Good. Then since you're in… I'll make you stronger."

He leaned forward, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial, competitive rumble. "Who knows? Next time we see your old man, maybe you'll get to punch his stupid dragon face in before I do."

Yamato's breath hitched. Her eyes widened, then sparkled with pure, violent glee. The unnamed jealousy was vaporized, replaced by bloodthirsty ambition.

"Really?!" She practically vibrated in the water. "You can do that? Teach me to beat that bastard Bull Gorilla? I've wanted to crush him myself for so many years!"

Luffy nodded, a king confirming a decree. "We will start your training right after this bath."

The tension in the onsen shifted once more, but this time it was the electric crackle of impending combat, of shared purpose.

Yet, underneath it, beneath Yamato's eager agreement and Luffy's confident smirk, other currents still flowed. His thoughts, briefly diverted, drifted back to a palace in the Flower Capital and a princess's debt.

And Yamato, for her part, stored away that strange pang in her chest, that flicker of heat when he said my crew, and the memory of his distant, weirdly intimate expression.
