Chapter 894: A Decisive Victory
One had to admit, the Netherlands were still a traditional European powerhouse. Even without star-studded names, their overall strength was undeniable.
In the 85th minute, Nathan Aké sent a looping cross from the left into the box, where Denzel Dumfries headed powerfully at the far post to make it 3–3.
The Johan Cruyff Arena erupted into thunderous celebration. Thirty thousand home fans roared in delighted disbelief; their relentless team had stolen their hearts once again.
For Portuguese supporters, though, it was a gut punch. Their team had worked tirelessly, twice taking the lead—only to be pegged back twice. Frustration rippled through the away end.
A lesser side might have crumbled after such a blow. But Portugal weren't a lesser side. With two unyielding leaders—Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo—on the pitch, they responded with unwavering resolve.
Then, in the first minute of stoppage time, Ronaldo combined superbly with substitute Rafa Silva, exchanged wall passes, dribbled past the keeper, and slotted calmly into the empty net. Portugal led for a third time.
That strike also made Ronaldo the all-time leading scorer in European Championship history, with eleven goals—surpassing Bruno by one.
The captain celebrated wildly; he had finally stood alone at the top of history.
Bruno, rather than looking bitter, met him with an honest smile and warm applause.
...
Of course, congratulating Ronaldo didn't mean Bruno intended to accept second place.
Just three minutes later, in the fourth minute of added time, Portugal launched one last counterattack. Rafa Silva burst down the flank again, slicing through the Dutch defenders.
Instead of shooting, he cut the ball across the goalmouth from the right.
Bruno darted into the box, ghosting ahead of Wijndal, and pushed the ball calmly into the bottom left corner of the net.
5–3!
A hat-trick!
"GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!"
"Bruno Fernandes—again!"
"And what a story tonight! He's scored a hat-trick in this breathtaking clash, his 11th goal in the European Championship finals—tying Ronaldo once more just minutes after being overtaken!"
"Bruno and Ronaldo—what a duo! One with a hat-trick, the other with a brace. They've traded blows for the all-time record while leading Portugal to a spectacular win over the Netherlands. This match will live in fans' memories for years to come if Portugal go on to lift the title."
...
After netting his third goal, Bruno was ablaze with emotion. He sprinted down the touchline, gliding past cheering teammates, his arms spread wide.
Reaching the corner flag near his own half, he stopped and laughed triumphantly, raising his arms toward the Portuguese fans.
The chanting began again—his name echoing around the stands in rhythmic waves. Portugal had delivered a masterpiece, and Bruno's performance could only be described as perfection.
In just his second European Championship, he'd chosen to mark it with a hat-trick against the host nation. All of Europe now saw clearly: he wasn't just Portugal's engine—he was their beating heart, their most valuable asset, their ultimate competitive edge.
And beyond that, the overwhelming favorite for the FIFA World Player of the Year and Ballon d'Or.
"Cristiano Ronaldo shared the field with Bruno Fernandes tonight at the Johan Cruyff Arena. One wonders what he thought as Bruno sealed his hat-trick—but one thing is certain: in this year's global awards race, Bruno has sprinted far ahead."
"In comparison, Ronaldo's campaign with Juventus was modest: a Super Cup and Coppa Italia triumph, but no Serie A crown, ending their domestic streak and exiting the Champions League in the round of sixteen against Porto. Four goals in six appearances—not even top ten in scoring."
"Meanwhile, Manchester United under Mourinho dominated the world stage—winning the Super Cup, Community Shield, Club World Cup, League Cup, Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League—all seven, an unprecedented 'seasonal sevenfold.' Five straight Premier League titles, four consecutive Champions Leagues—United are writing football's most terrifying dynasty. And Bruno? He's swept nearly every personal accolade: Premier League Golden Boot, Champions League Golden Boot, triple season awards at home…"
"Against such form, even an in-form Wijndal couldn't contain him tonight. Frank de Boer miscalculated—and paid the price."
...
Soon after Bruno's third goal, the referee blew the final whistle. Portugal had triumphed 5–3 in a thrilling goal fest against the Netherlands.
"I'm very pleased with our performance today," Fernando Santos said after the match, surrounded by eager reporters.
"We fell behind against an excellent team, but our response showed strength and character. The spirit and resilience we displayed will carry us far in this tournament."
"I was disappointed by how early we conceded—we'd planned to put them under pressure from the start. But football isn't always controllable. What matters is how we recovered, and we did so magnificently."
Santos went on to praise several players, starting with Danilo Pereira. "He made mistakes early but was outstanding overall. His discipline and effort were vital for us."
He also singled out Rafa Silva, whose two assists after coming on proved decisive. "Rafa changed the game. His contribution was enormous, and he's showing greater consistency every match."
...
Of course, Santos reserved special praise for Bruno Fernandes.
"After playing in the Champions League final, Bruno was clearly fatigued when he joined us. Physically, he wasn't fully ready—I'd hoped to rest him. But when you face an opponent like the Netherlands, you need players of Bruno's quality."
"He never disappoints. His performance tonight was phenomenal—especially his first two goals, both beautiful and crucial. He was easily our standout player."
Coming from Santos—known for rarely singling anyone out—that was high praise indeed. It reflected how invaluable Bruno had been and how deeply the coach recognized his influence.
With this victory, Portugal looked like firm title contenders, though Santos remained cautious.
"To retain our European crown, we must excel in two areas: first, keep our winning record against elite teams strong; and second, show consistency versus the rest. Only then can we defend the title."
Still, he smiled. "I believe in this team. We can finish this tournament with something to be proud of."
...
Across the hall, Frank de Boer fumed at his post-match press conference.
"Portugal were simply better than us—by far," he admitted. "Their pressing, their tackling—they forced us into mistakes, and we failed to adapt."
"We started well, built an early lead, and I thought we could grow from there. But then our defensive mistakes cost us. Bruno Fernandes—his performance completely changed the match. Those first two goals were incredible, world-class."
"If fans replay those highlights later, they'll probably think he wasn't facing a top contender—but an amateur team!" he said bitterly. "Not one of my players lived up to expectations. We were completely destroyed—by Bruno Fernandes."
Even in anger, de Boer's words were perhaps the ultimate compliment.
That night, all of Europe agreed: before a roaring Amsterdam crowd, Bruno Fernandes stood above all—one man who conquered a team, and carried Portugal to glory.
