Chapter 786: A Big Victory
Eddie Howe knew he couldn't afford to hesitate at this critical moment. He made a decisive call: keep attacking!
The goal Bournemouth had just conceded was merely a lapse, a moment where Manchester United had caught them off guard.
The real motivation behind Howe's decision, however, was Bournemouth's precarious situation in the league. They were languishing in 19th place with just 27 points, facing immense relegation pressure. But there was still hope—Bournemouth trailed 17th-place Watford by just one point, meaning a win could lift them out of the relegation zone.
Their rivals for survival weren't in easy positions either. Aston Villa faced a daunting trip to Liverpool, while Watford were set to challenge Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. This match against Manchester United was Bournemouth's golden opportunity to escape the drop zone.
"Adam," Howe called to right-back Adam Smith, "keep attacking! Let's capitalize on the chance that United might relax after their goal. We need to equalize quickly!"
"Understood, coach!" Smith replied with a determined expression.
Smith had been at fault for losing possession in the buildup to United's goal, and he was burning with frustration.
"Also, remind Jefferson [Lerma] to be wary of their counterattacks," Howe added. "Their speed is lethal!"
United's Response
When play resumed, it didn't take long for José Mourinho to notice Bournemouth's persistent aggression.
The only adjustment Howe seemed to have made was instructing Lerma to stay back as a midfield shield.
Mourinho smirked. Foolish move.
United's primary strategy was to exploit their wingers' speed. Relying solely on one defensive midfielder wouldn't suffice. Even if Lerma managed to cover the central areas, Bournemouth's flanks were still wide open—especially with Smith pressing so high up the pitch.
Mourinho walked to the touchline and whistled sharply, catching Bruno Fernandes' attention. Mourinho held up three fingers—a signal to shift into full offensive mode.
Receiving his manager's instructions, Fernandes nodded, and United went into overdrive, launching relentless attacks toward Bournemouth's goal.
At this juncture, Howe made a grave error. Instead of pulling back to defend and regroup, he interpreted United's forward play as an opportunity, believing it would leave spaces for Bournemouth to exploit.
What followed was a wild, all-out attacking exchange between the two teams.
United's Second Goal
With both sides committing heavily to attack, the game became increasingly chaotic.
In the 33rd minute, United capitalized on Bournemouth's high press to mount another rapid counterattack.
This time, the move began down the left wing, with Rashford leading the charge. He cut inside, feigning a long-range shot before slipping a perfectly weighted pass to Mbappé on the right.
The Frenchman skillfully sidestepped left-back Rico and whipped in a cross. Bruno, appearing ready to receive, cleverly let the ball run through his legs.
Harry Kane, positioned in the middle, shielded the ball with his body before laying it off to the charging Rashford.
With clinical precision, Rashford struck a low shot that threaded through goalkeeper Ramsdale's legs and into the net.
"2-0! Rashford scores!" Martin Tyler exclaimed. "A brilliantly smart finish, leaving the keeper no chance!"
"Once again, United's counterattack demonstrates their blistering pace and flawless coordination," Andy Gray added. "Bournemouth's defenders are scrambling, but they simply cannot cope with United's one-touch passing and lightning-fast movement."
A Team Unraveling
Down 2-0, Bournemouth began to unravel.
Soon after United's second goal, Lerma fouled Kane just outside the penalty area, earning a yellow card and gifting United a dangerous free-kick opportunity.
Bruno stepped up, his signature composure on full display. He took a measured run-up and curled a sublime shot over the wall. The ball dipped and swerved, evading Ramsdale's outstretched hand to nestle in the top-right corner.
"GOOOOOOOOOAL!" Andy Gray roared. "What a strike! A sensational free-kick from Bruno Fernandes! 3-0! Manchester United have sealed the win with that absolute beauty!"
The Fallout
With Bruno's wonder goal, United had effectively ended the contest. Bournemouth, outclassed and outmaneuvered, looked resigned to their fate.
"Manchester United are showcasing why they are title contenders," Tyler concluded. "This performance has been nothing short of dominant."
As the final whistle approached, United's players maintained their focus, controlling possession and ensuring no slip-ups. The match ended with a resounding 3-0 victory for the Red Devils, leaving their fans jubilant and sending a clear message to their title rivals.
"Bruno! The Manchester United captain scores a brace! This marks Bruno's 39th Premier League goal of the season, putting him within striking distance of breaking his own record of 41 goals in a single Premier League season from 2017-2018!
Bournemouth is completely stunned! They have no answer to Manchester United's relentless attack!
At halftime, the scoreline read Manchester United 3:0 Bournemouth.
"3:0! Manchester United lead by three goals as the first half comes to an end. Look at Eddie Howe—his face is ashen. The man once named the 'EFL Manager of the Decade' clearly understands how dire Bournemouth's relegation prospects will be if they lose today," Martin Tyler commented.
Cameras then caught a tense exchange between Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe and his player, No. 20 David Brooks, on the sidelines. After what appeared to be a heated argument, Brooks angrily gestured and walked off.
José Mourinho, observing this from his technical area, allowed himself a sly smile.
"Three goals down at halftime, internal discord in the ranks—Bournemouth's chances of a comeback are slim to none. Their misfortune is Manchester United's gain, a cause for celebration," Mourinho mused.
The Second Half
As the second half kicked off, Mourinho grinned, seemingly anticipating what was to come. He had noticed a change in Bournemouth's lineup.
Whatever had transpired in Bournemouth's dressing room during halftime, Eddie Howe decided to roll the dice, substituting Brooks for No. 14 Arnaut Danjuma Groeneveld.
Groeneveld, an out-and-out forward, was a clear indication that Howe was going all-in, willing to risk everything to chase the game at Old Trafford.
However, Bournemouth's increased attacking intent did little to trouble Manchester United. On the contrary, United's waves of attacks relentlessly battered Bournemouth's already shaky defense.
Fourth Goal
In the 53rd minute, Luke Shaw outpaced Adam Smith on the left wing, utilizing his blistering speed to surge past the Bournemouth defender. He delivered a precise low cross into the box.
Harry Kane, positioned at the near post, met the cross with a sharp shot that Ramsdale managed to deflect. But before Bournemouth's defenders could clear the ball, Kylian Mbappé pounced, stabbing it into the back of the net.
4:0!
Despite trailing by four goals, Eddie Howe refused to throw in the towel.
In the 66th minute, Bournemouth made three substitutions in a last-ditch effort to mount a comeback:
Philip Billing replaced Dominic Solanke.Dan Gosling came on for Junior Stanislas.Harry Wilson replaced Lewis Cook.
Howe was clearly banking on injecting fresh legs into his attack, hoping to turn the tide.
Mourinho's Response
Mourinho, confident that the match was already decided, began making substitutions of his own. His priority was to preserve the fitness of his starting players while offering opportunities to those on the bench.
Bruno Fernandes, along with most of United's attacking stars, was subbed off. Juan Mata, Riyad Mahrez, Mason Greenwood, Fred, and Scott McTominay were brought on to see out the remainder of the game.
Greenwood Shines
Despite United's attacking core being replaced, the goals kept coming.
Mason Greenwood, in particular, was a constant thorn in Bournemouth's side, earning himself a yellow card after drawing a foul from a frustrated Bournemouth defender.
In the 83rd minute, Mata delivered a pinpoint through ball to Greenwood, whose initial shot was saved by Ramsdale. The resulting corner, taken by Mata, found Greenwood leaping highest to nod the ball into the net.
"GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOALLLLLLL!!!!"
"5:0! Mason Greenwood scores for Manchester United, extending their lead over Bournemouth!"
Final Score
The match concluded with a resounding 5:0 victory for Manchester United.
However, their lead at the top of the table remained unchanged, as Liverpool bounced back from their thrashing by Manchester City with a 2:0 win over Aston Villa at Anfield.
Elsewhere in the league:
Leicester City cruised to a 3:0 victory over Crystal Palace.Arsenal triumphed 2:0 against Wolves in a top-six clash.Chelsea secured a 3:0 win over Watford at Stamford Bridge.Tottenham eked out a 1:0 victory against Everton.
The shock of the round, however, was Manchester City's unexpected 0:1 loss to Southampton.
"This match perfectly encapsulates Manchester City's season—brilliant one moment, abysmal the next," Martin Tyler remarked. "From thrashing Liverpool 4:0 to losing to relegation candidates like Norwich and Southampton, their inconsistency has been their undoing this season."
