Chapter 743: Transfer Window Closes

Ralph Hasenhüttl had assigned Pierre-Emile Højbjerg to mark Bruno Fernandes in this match, pinning high hopes on the Danish midfielder.

When Bruno moved outside the box to receive the ball, Højbjerg followed closely, planning to capitalize on Bruno's initial touch to intercept the ball.

However, Højbjerg quickly realized how naive his plan was.

Despite his respectable physicality, Højbjerg felt as if he was up against an immovable wall when trying to challenge Bruno.

Attempting to poke the ball away multiple times, Højbjerg failed to make contact. Resigned, he decided to fall back on preventing Bruno from turning toward the goal.

Bruno held the ball at his feet, leaning slightly to the right as if preparing to spin in that direction. Højbjerg, anticipating this, shifted to block the turn.

But as soon as Højbjerg adjusted, Bruno shifted his weight and exerted pressure, forcing Højbjerg off balance.

With Højbjerg staggering, Bruno seized the moment. Using Højbjerg as a pivot point, Bruno twisted past him and turned to face the goal.

Panicked, Højbjerg considered committing a tactical foul to halt Bruno's advance. However, he hesitated, recalling the yellow card he had received earlier for fouling Rashford. Any further foul would result in a red card.

This hesitation gave Bruno just enough time to break into the box. Now one-on-one with goalkeeper Angus Gunn, Bruno executed a deft chipped shot, sending the ball into the back of the net.

1–0!

"GOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!"

"Bruno! Bruno!! Bruno!!! It's 1–0! Manchester United take the lead against Southampton, with Bruno Fernandes scoring his fourth Premier League goal of the season!"

José Mourinho clapped from the touchline, celebrating the opener.

Before the first half ended, Harry Kane doubled United's lead with a goal, making it 2–0.

In the second half, Marcus Rashford added a third for United, and substitute Juan Mata assisted Kylian Mbappé for a fourth.

Southampton managed to pull one back through Jannik Vestergaard, who headed in from a corner.

The match concluded with Manchester United claiming a commanding 4–1 victory over Southampton at St. Mary's Stadium. United's fourth consecutive league win kept them atop the Premier League table.

Manchester City thrashed Brighton 4–0 at the Etihad Stadium.Liverpool secured a 3–0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor.

Among the remaining "Big Six" teams:

September 3, 2019

Midnight Central European Time

With the Spanish and French transfer windows—the last of Europe's top five leagues—closing, the summer transfer window officially ended.

For Manchester United, the summer was unusually quiet.

Outgoing Transfers:Ander Herrera joined PSG.Matteo Darmian moved to Parma for £10 million.Chris Smalling transferred to Roma for £20 million.Incoming Transfers: None.

Despite their usual prominence in the transfer market, United made no additions this summer.

Yet, retaining key players like İlkay Gündoğan and Marcus Rashford was seen as a significant success. Stability and cohesion were priorities for the reigning Premier League champions.

United's silence in the market underscored their dominance. With a squad already brimming with quality, their focus remained on maintaining the dynasty they had painstakingly built.

The Premier League remains the most extravagant league in terms of spending, continuing its dominance as the commercial powerhouse of football for the seventh consecutive year.

Since the 2014–2015 season, when Premier League summer spending first exceeded €1 billion, the figures have risen steadily, surpassing the €1.5 billion mark this summer. This total includes Chelsea, constrained by a transfer ban, who spent just €45 million to make Mateo Kovačić's loan move permanent.

La Liga also set a new record this summer, surpassing the €1 billion threshold for the first time, thanks to several blockbuster transfers. This allowed La Liga to overtake Serie A and reclaim second place in spending.

Serie A maintained the "Cristiano Ronaldo effect," with total spending exceeding €1 billion for the second straight year.

The Bundesliga, by contrast, spent less than €750 million, barely half of the Premier League's total.

The lowest-spending league among the top five, Ligue 1, ranked last in spending.

Net Spending Analysis

The Premier League led the net spending chart with a massive €737 million, more than double that of the second-placed league and almost equivalent to the Bundesliga's total spending. Serie A overtook La Liga in net spending to become the second most extravagant league.

Interestingly, Ligue 1 was the only league among the top five where transfer income exceeded expenditure.

While the Premier League led in total and net spending, La Liga's "big three"—Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atlético Madrid—dominated individual deals. The three clubs completed the summer's top three transfers:

Atlético Madrid signed João Félix for €126 million.Barcelona paid €120 million for Antoine Griezmann from Atlético Madrid.Real Madrid spent €100 million to sign Eden Hazard from Chelsea.

Premier League Spending Highlights

Manchester City surpassed Manchester United as the league's biggest spender, splashing €170 million, making them the only Premier League club to exceed €160 million in spending.

Arsenal shocked many by shedding their frugal reputation, spending over €150 million, prompting jokes about turning a "£40 million budget into a £400 million impact." However, much of this was paid in installments.

On net spending, newly promoted Aston Villa topped the chart, spending nearly €149 million across 20 signings without generating any transfer income, as most departures were free transfers or loans.

City and Arsenal ranked second and third in net spending.

Conversely, Manchester United, previously at the top of the net spending charts in recent years, dropped to second-to-last.

United's cautious approach led to a net profit of £65 million, second only to Chelsea, who earned £120 million by selling Hazard and Morata.

In total, only four Premier League teams posted a net profit this summer:

ChelseaManchester UnitedLiverpool (+£30 million)Crystal Palace (+£40 million)

La Liga's Dominance

La Liga's big three dominated spending not only domestically but across Europe. Each club completed at least one €100 million transfer:

Real Madrid led the way with a €300 million spending spree, highlighted by Hazard's arrival.

Manchester United's Low-Key Moves

Despite selling three players (Herrera, Darmian, and Smalling) and earning £70 million, United reinvested some funds into their youth ranks.

On September 2, United quietly announced the signing of 16-year-old Jude Bellingham from Birmingham City for a £5 million development fee.

Though this move stirred minor waves in England—mainly due to Bellingham's potential and the significant fee for a youth player—it was largely overshadowed by the summer's high-profile deals.

FIFA Player of the Year Finalists Announced

On the same day, FIFA revealed the three finalists for the 2019 FIFA Men's Player of the Year award: Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Bruno Fernandes.

The earlier 10-man shortlist included Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Virgil van Dijk, N'Golo Kanté, Sadio Mané, Kylian Mbappé, and Mohamed Salah.

The award recognizes performances between July 16, 2018, and July 19, 2019. The winner, chosen by a combination of fans, experts, national team coaches, and captains, will be announced on September 23 in Milan.
