Chapter 26 - A Mission Ahead

The oppressive gloom of the Dellhey University grounds had finally lifted. The once suffocating terror that had gripped its students and faculty dissipated like smoke in the wind, leaving behind a semblance of normalcy. Classes resumed, laughter returned to the corridors, and life began to heal its cracks.

But for Scarnister, there was no rest. The fusion of Scarlett and Sinister Rogue stalked the shadows of the university, ceaselessly hunting for answers, searching for a way to reach Vidynn, and ultimately, for Valkorath.

Samaira had become a reluctant ally—or so Scarnister believed. In truth, Samaira's motives were far from noble. The absence of Scarlett, Shellie, and the looming threat of Black Web authorities filled her with an illicit sense of relief. She had her life back, free from the chains of fear and guilt that had bound her.

One evening, beneath a crimson sky, Scarnister confronted Samaira in the library, a place where the quiet hum of academia masked their urgent conversations.

"Samaira," Scarnister said, her voice resonating with the layered tones of her dual existence. "We need to consult the Black Web."

Samaira stiffened, her hands clutching a dusty tome. "I can't do that," she said, her voice trembling but firm.

"Can't?" Scarnister took a step closer, her towering presence casting a long shadow over Samaira. "Or won't?"

Samaira turned, defiance flickering in her eyes. "I won't," she said, her voice gaining strength. "I've risked my life once with the Black Web, and I barely survived. I'm not doing it again. You're on your own."

Scarnister's eyes burned with an unholy light, and the air around her grew colder. "We gave you a second chance, Samaira," she said, her tone darkening. "We spared you when we could have ended you. And this is how you repay us?"

Samaira backed away, her heart pounding. "I owe you nothing!" she shouted. "I didn't ask for your help! I didn't ask for any of this!"

The room seemed to darken further as Scarnister's fury erupted. Her voice was a guttural growl, layered with Rogue's rage and Scarlett's frustration. "You dare defy us?"

Before Samaira could respond, Scarnister lunged at her, their fused form radiating dark energy. Samaira screamed, throwing up her arms in a futile attempt to shield herself. But just as Scarnister's clawed hand reached for her, a sound like the groaning of ancient wood echoed through the room.

A door-shaped portal materialized behind Samaira, its edges shimmering with an iridescent glow. The sudden appearance startled both of them, freezing the chaos in place.

"What is this?" Scarnister hissed, her head snapping toward the portal.

Samaira, half-dazed, stumbled backward. "I don't know!" she cried, her voice shaking.

The portal pulsed with a strange energy, drawing Samaira closer as if it had a will of its own. In her panicked state, she lost her footing and fell backward into the portal. Her scream was cut off abruptly as the door slammed shut and vanished into thin air.

The silence that followed was deafening. Scarnister stood frozen, her glowing eyes wide with shock. "What just happened?" she muttered to herself.

Before she could process what had occurred, a voice echoed through the room, smooth and mocking. "It's been a long time since we talked."

Scarnister spun around, her claws at the ready. Standing in the corner, partially obscured by shadows, was a figure she hadn't seen in years.

"Professor Ruso," she said, her voice a mixture of surprise and suspicion.

Ruso stepped forward, his presence calm yet commanding. His eyes gleamed with a knowing light, and his lips curled into a faint smile. "You've certainly been busy," he said, gesturing vaguely at the space where the portal had disappeared.

"What are you doing here?" Scarnister demanded.

Ruso chuckled. "Oh, I've been keeping an eye on you," he said. "You and your... unique predicament."

Scarnister narrowed her eyes. "If you're here to mock us, you've wasted your time."

Ruso raised a hand, his expression turning serious. "On the contrary, I'm here to help," he said. "Your journey to Valkorath won't be easy, and you'll need more than brute force and anger to succeed."

"We are Scarnister," she said, her voice dripping with defiance. "We don't need anyone. We can do this alone."

Ruso tilted his head, a sly smile playing on his lips. "Is that so?" he asked, his tone laced with sarcasm. "Because from where I'm standing, it looks like you just lost your only ally."

Scarnister bristled, her glowing eyes narrowing. "Samaira was a liability," she said. "We don't need her."

"Maybe not," Ruso said, stepping closer. "But you do need a team. You can't fight Valkorath alone. Not even in your... enhanced state."

Scarnister hesitated, the weight of his words sinking in. "What kind of team?" she asked, her voice softer but still wary.

Ruso's smile widened. "Come with me," he said simply.

Before Scarnister could respond, she remembered Samaira. "Where did she go?" she asked, her voice tinged with genuine concern.

Ruso chuckled darkly. "Oh, you don't need to worry about her," he said, turning toward the shadows. "She'll soon learn what it truly means to risk one's life."

The words hung in the air as Ruso began to walk away, his figure blending into the darkness. Scarnister hesitated for a moment before following him, her mind racing with questions and uncertainties.

The hallway was silent once more, the echoes of their voices fading into the void. The journey ahead was unclear, the stakes higher than ever.

And so, with more questions than answers, Scarnister took the first step into the unknown, leaving behind the remnants of her past and stepping toward the uncharted future.
