Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Getting to know her

Eric's POV

I woke up feeling relieved. No nightmares last night. Her hands had been like a healing touch. I wondered what had triggered her to help me. I got up from the mat, stared at her sleepy face for a while, and headed to the living room to clean up. After finishing, I prepared breakfast and was dishing out the food when I noticed her presence behind me.

"Breakfast is served. Eat before it gets cold," I said, trying to sound indifferent.

"Thank you," she replied, her voice soft.

Seems she's decided to be appreciative and not be a spoilt brat. I handed her food over and she went straight to the dining table to eat.

"Hmm, this tastes nice," she complimented after taking a spoonful.

I just grunted, not wanting to encourage conversation.

"You know, we never got to introduce ourselves. I'm Sofia," she said, extending her hand for a shake.

I hesitated for a moment before receiving the hand shake. "Eric."

She smiled and continued eating. I went back to my food, trying to focus on the taste.

"So, can you tell me about yourself?" she asked, breaking the silence.

I sighed inwardly. "I'm Eric. From a family of four.... Lost them due to this... situation."

Sofia's eyes widened in sympathy, but I didn't want pity.

"Can I ask a question?" she requested.

I nodded curtly.

"Do you know how all this started?" she asked, curiosity in her voice.

I hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. "Dennis Asteroid, a scientist... he was trying to introduce useful human features into rabbits. But something went wrong. The rabbits grew bigger, escaped, and... well, you know the rest."

Sofia's eyes were wide with horror. "But how do you go out to get things without being noticed or killed?"

"They can only hear sounds and smell blood. If you're careful, they won't notice you," I explained.

Sofia nodded thoughtfully. "Is there any solution to this problem?"

I shrugged. "Give yourself up to the monsters."

Sofia raised an eyebrow. "That's not a solution."

I just shrugged again.

After finishing breakfast, Sofia packed up the plates and did the dishes. She then went back to the mat in the living room to relax. She started looking around, seemingly lost in thought, until her gaze landed on me. She stared at me like she was seeing me for the first time.

"Can you stop staring?" I asked, feeling uncomfortable.

Sofia defended, "I wasn't staring at you."

I raised an eyebrow. "I wasn't speaking to you"

Sofia looked embarrassed. "Sorry, I thought you were speaking to me."

I went back to reading my book, trying to ignore her. Sofia stood up to find something to read and picked out a book titled "Act of Seduction." She scanned through it, then suddenly shut the book in disgust. I giggled, unable to help myself.

My eyes were focused on my book, but I could sense Sofia moving closer to me. "Is the book that interesting that you didn't notice me?" she asked sarcastically.

I smirked. "Why should I notice you? You're not a book I should focus on."

Sofia rolled her eyes. "That's not what I meant. It's boring here. Can't we talk?"

I shrugged. "Maybe I'm a boring person."

Sofia huffed. "Fine, continue reading your book. Like I care."

She walked out, leaving me to wonder what I'd done wrong.
