Chapter 42 - Chapter 1: The Dragon’s Rage

The land had long been under the protection of Alz, a dragon of immense power and wisdom. For centuries, Alz had been the guardian of this vast continent, a creature revered and feared in equal measure. His presence alone kept rival kingdoms at bay and maintained the delicate balance between nature and civilization. The people of the land worshipped him as a god, offering tributes and prayers to ensure his favor. Alz was more than just a beast; he was a symbol of stability, a being whose mere existence deterred war and strife.

But Alz was not an unfeeling creature. Beneath the hardened scales and fiery breath lay a heart capable of love and compassion. This side of him was known only to a select few, and at the center of his affections was a young woman named Elara. She was not of noble birth, nor was she a sorceress or warrior. Elara was a simple commoner, born in a small village on the edge of Alz's domain. Yet, she had captivated the dragon with her kindness, her bravery, and her unwavering spirit.

Elara had met Alz by chance, or so it seemed. She had wandered into the forest near her village, seeking solace after the death of her parents. The forest was thick with ancient trees and teeming with creatures both benign and malevolent. It was a place where few dared to tread, but Elara had no fear. She had nothing left to lose, or so she thought. As she walked deeper into the woods, she stumbled upon a cave, hidden behind a waterfall. Curiosity piqued, she ventured inside.

What she found within was a sight that would have terrified any other person. The cavern was vast, its walls lined with gold and precious gems that sparkled in the dim light. In the center of the cave lay Alz, his massive form coiled upon a bed of stone. His scales shimmered in the darkness, a blend of deep crimson and obsidian black. His eyes, the color of molten gold, glowed softly as he observed the intruder. Elara should have been frightened, should have run for her life, but something about the dragon calmed her. She felt no malice from him, only a deep, ancient sadness.

"Who are you, little one?" Alz's voice rumbled through the cavern, a sound that echoed off the walls like thunder. Yet, there was no threat in his tone, only curiosity.

Elara, her heart pounding in her chest, found her voice. "My name is Elara. I…I didn't mean to intrude. I was just…lost."

The dragon tilted his head, observing her with keen interest. "Lost, you say? And what brings you to my domain, Elara?"

She hesitated, unsure of how to explain the emptiness she felt. "I don't know," she admitted. "I just…needed to be away from everything. From everyone. My parents…they're gone. And now…I'm alone."

Alz regarded her in silence for a moment before speaking again. "You are not the first to seek solace in these woods. But few ever find their way to me. Perhaps it is fate that brought you here."

From that day on, Elara would visit Alz regularly. They would talk for hours, sharing stories of their lives and the world beyond the forest. Alz, who had lived for centuries, found himself enchanted by the young woman's innocence and her unyielding spirit. In her, he saw a kindred soul, someone who, despite her pain, still found beauty in the world.

Over time, their bond deepened. Elara became more than just a visitor; she became Alz's confidante, his companion, and eventually, his beloved. The people of the land knew nothing of their relationship, for it was a secret kept hidden from all. To them, Alz was a fearsome guardian, a creature of immense power who kept the world in balance. But to Elara, he was simply Alz—a dragon with a heart as large as the mountains he called home.

Their love was not without its challenges. Elara was human, and Alz was a dragon—two beings from entirely different worlds. But they made it work, finding comfort in each other's presence and strength in their bond. They knew that their time together was limited, that Elara's life would be but a fleeting moment in Alz's long existence. Yet, they did not dwell on this. Instead, they cherished every moment they had, knowing that their love was a rare and precious thing.

But fate is a cruel mistress, and their happiness was not meant to last. One day, Elara fell ill—a mysterious sickness that no healer could cure. Alz watched in despair as the woman he loved grew weaker with each passing day. He searched the world for a cure, flying to distant lands and consulting with the wisest of sages. But all his efforts were in vain. Elara's condition worsened, and there was nothing Alz could do to save her.

On her final day, Elara lay in Alz's arms, her once vibrant spirit now a mere flicker. She looked up at him, her eyes filled with love and sorrow. "My love," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I will never forget you."

And with those words, Elara took her last breath, leaving Alz shattered and heartbroken. The dragon's roar of anguish echoed across the land, a sound that shook the very foundations of the earth. In that moment, something inside Alz snapped. His grief turned into uncontrollable rage, and he unleashed his fury upon the world.

The once peaceful dragon, who had been the guardian of the land, became a force of destruction. For a year, he rampaged across the continent, destroying everything in his path. Villages were reduced to ashes, towns were obliterated, and countless lives were lost. The people, who had once revered him, now lived in terror, praying for a way to end his wrath.

But as time passed, something strange began to happen. Alz started to forget. The memories of Elara, once so vivid and clear, began to fade. He could no longer remember her face, her voice, or the love they had shared. All that remained was a deep, unending rage, but even that began to lose its intensity. The dragon's mind, once sharp and full of purpose, became a fog of confusion and sorrow.

The people, desperate to survive, sought a way to calm the dragon. They knew that Elara had been the only one who could soothe his anger, and so they devised a plan. They would find a woman who resembled Elara, someone who could remind Alz of his lost love and bring an end to his rampage.
