SKYLAR
My hand is still pressed flat against the door when I finally make the decision to open it.
Lucien stands there in a plain grey jacket, hands shoved into his pockets. For a second, neither of us says anything.
He looks the same and yet completely different at once. It's the same sharp jaw, and the same quiet stillness that used to make me feel like nothing could touch me as long as he was in the room.
But his eyes are different tonight. There's something soft and apologetic sitting in them that I've never seen on him before, and it unsettles me more than if he'd shown up angry.
"Hey," he mutters.
"Hi Lucien." I lean against the doorframe, going for casual though my pulse is doing something ridiculous. "Did you get lost on your way to somewhere important, or is this an actual visit?"
The corner of his mouth twitches, and I almost get a smile.
"I couldn't lose my way here even if I tried, Sky." The air thickens as he gives me a loaded stare. "Do you have a minute?"
