ASHTON
Skylar's laughter floats out from the kitchen, followed by the sound of Kat complaining about something and Skylar insisting she was doing it correctly. There is even humming, like, actual humming.
It would have been comforting if I hadn't spent most of the drive over replaying everything Lucien told me and imagining all the things that could have gone wrong if he hadn't reached my sister's apartment in time. For one disorienting second, I almost forget my brothers had rushed here with me.
Asher pauses beside me, his frown deepening. I know he's still trying to mull over everything that transpired here. Ashal takes a deep breath, laden with compressed worry.
None of us say anything. We just stand there watching and listening.
Skylar appears blissfully unaware that three of her brothers have arrived because she is too busy arguing with Kat over some sauce bubbling on the stove.
"...and you don't rush this part."
"Sky, the thing is practically begging for mercy."
