The massive chamber vibrated with the raw power of the Mako Reactor. In the center, a huge, boxy Shinra mech, bristling with weapons, lumbered towards Barret and Cloudia. Its metallic feet stomped on the grated floor, making the whole structure tremble. Energy beams shot from its cannons, tearing through the air.
Barret, roaring defiance, blasted away with his gun-arm, sparks flying off the mech's heavy armor. Cloudia, incredibly fast, zipped around the mech, her Buster Sword a blur of silver as she tried to find weak points in its plating. They were a powerful duo, but the mech was huge and heavily armed.
Arthur, Aerith, and Tifa burst into the chamber, their eyes immediately drawn to the intense fight.
"They're in trouble!" Aerith cried, her voice filled with worry.
"That thing's too big for them alone," Tifa said, already moving forward, her fists up. She was ready to jump into the fray.
Arthur put a hand on Tifa's shoulder. "Wait," he said. He quickly scanned the mech, his Super Focus allowing him to instantly pick up on its design, its weak points, and its attack patterns. He could see how Barret and Cloudia were struggling to get past its thick outer shell.
"We need to hit it where it hurts," Arthur explained, his voice calm amidst the chaos. "Tifa, aim for its leg joints. They're weaker. Aerith, use your magic to distract it, or help Barret and Cloudia."
Aerith nodded, already casting a spell. A shimmering green shield appeared around Barret, deflecting a beam from the mech.
Arthur took a deep breath, focusing his energy. He wouldn't hold back too much now. This mech was a serious threat. He channeled his Dragonic Canon power, but instead of a wide blast, he focused it into a concentrated, piercing beam, almost like a laser. He aimed for a small panel on the mech's chest, a spot he knew was crucial.
ZZZZZZZT!
The beam shot out, glowing with a fierce red light. It hit the panel with pinpoint accuracy. The mech shuddered, a shower of sparks exploding from the impact point. Its arm cannons sparked and then went silent.
Barret and Cloudia, who had been busy dodging, looked up, startled. The mech's attacks had stopped.
"What in the...?" Barret bellowed, looking around for the source of the attack.
"Its weapons are down!" Cloudia shouted, her eyes fixed on the smoking panel. She quickly connected the dots, looking at Arthur with a new level of awe.
Now was their chance.
"Go, Tifa!" Arthur yelled.
With the mech's ranged attacks disabled, she became a whirlwind of motion. She launched herself at the mech's leg, delivering a flurry of powerful kicks and punches to the joint Arthur had indicated. Her movements were incredibly fast, blurring as she unleashed her full strength.
The mech tried to stomp on her, but Tifa was too agile. She ducked and weaved, her blows chipping away at the weakened armor.
Cloudia, seeing Tifa's assault, joined in. Her Buster Sword descended in powerful arcs, striking the same leg joint. The clang of metal on metal echoed loudly.
Barret, still recovering from the surprise, quickly found his footing. "Alright, you tin can!" he roared, turning his gun-arm on the mech's head. He unleashed a barrage of bullets, tearing into its optical sensors, blinding it.
Arthur continued to use his Dragonic Canon, but now he aimed at the other leg, creating more weak points for Tifa and Cloudia to exploit. He also used Dragonic Hand to subtly push pieces of falling debris towards the mech, making it stumble, keeping it off balance. He wasn't just fighting; he was orchestrating the battle, making sure everyone's attacks were as effective as possible.
Aerith, meanwhile, kept her focus on support. She cast Cure spells on Tifa and Cloudia whenever they took a hit, and even managed to cast a small Slow spell on the mech, making its movements even more sluggish. Her gentle light glowed brightly in the chaotic chamber, a beacon of hope.
The combination of their attacks was overwhelming. Tifa's precise, powerful strikes. Cloudia's devastating sword swings. Barret's relentless firepower. And Arthur's strategic weakening and constant disruption. The mech groaned, its heavy frame rocking back and forth.
Finally, with a tremendous roar from Barret and a final, powerful kick from Tifa that tore through the leg joint, the mech buckled. Its leg collapsed, sending it crashing to the ground with a thunderous BOOM! Dust and sparks flew everywhere.
Silence fell over the chamber, broken only by the steady hum of the Mako Reactor. The massive mech lay defeated, smoke rising from its broken frame.
Barret let out a triumphant yell, his gun-arm raised high. "Alright! That's how Avalanche gets it done!" He looked at Arthur, a wide grin splitting his face. "Dragon Kid, you're something else! That was some fancy magic shooting!"
Cloudia stood over the fallen mech, sheathing her Buster Sword. She looked at Arthur, her expression still unreadable, but there was no hint of her previous challenge or doubt. Only pure, unadulterated shock and a deep, quiet respect. She had seen true power, and it wasn't just in raw strength.
Tifa walked over to Arthur, her chest heaving slightly, a triumphant smile on her face. "That was... incredible, Arthur," she said, her voice filled with genuine admiration. "I've never seen anyone fight like that. You just... knew exactly what to do."
Aerith hugged Arthur tightly. "You saved us again!" she chirped happily.
Arthur returned her hug. "We did it together," he said, looking at all of them.
Barret then turned to the main task. "Alright, the mech's down. Let's get this bomb planted and blow this place to kingdom come!" He, Cloudia, and Tifa quickly moved towards the reactor's core access panel.
As they began setting the explosives, Arthur took a moment to reflect. He looked at Barret, his face smeared with grease but alive with determination. He saw Tifa, focused and strong, working with purpose. He saw Cloudia, quieter now, but moving with the same efficiency and dedication. And Aerith, always radiating warmth and light, even in this dark place.
'They're all here,' he thought, a sense of profound relief washing over him. 'Biggs, Jessie, and Wedge are safe. And now, Barret, Tifa, Aerith, and even Cloudia are here. They're all alive. And I'm here to make sure it stays that way.'
"Bomb's set!" Barret's booming voice echoed. "Ten minutes till detonation! We gotta move!"
The next ten minutes were a mad dash. With the mech destroyed and the core bomb counting down, Shinra was in full panic mode. Every corridor seemed to be swarming with troopers, their voices shouting into comms, their weapons ready.
Arthur, with his heightened senses and strategic mind, became the point man. He used his Dragonic Hand to seal off pathways behind them with falling debris, or to activate emergency locks, slowing Shinra's pursuit.
He'd occasionally unleash a non-lethal Dragonic Shot to disable a group of charging soldiers, sending them stumbling or knocking their weapons away.
Tifa, swift and agile, cleared the path ahead, her martial arts a blur of powerful strikes. She was an incredible fighter, her movements economical and devastating. Aerith, never far from Arthur, used her magic to create small, fleeting barriers, or to momentarily blind enemies with a flash of light. She even managed to send a couple of soldiers to sleep with her spells, making their escape easier.
Barret provided heavy cover fire, his gun-arm ripping through Shinra's defenses, clearing the way with sheer destructive force. Cloudia, though still mostly silent, moved with lethal efficiency, her Buster Sword cutting down any enemy that got too close. Her presence was a formidable force, a silent protector.
They reached the exit tunnel, the same one Team Charlie had used. Just as they were about to step outside, a final squad of Shinra soldiers, led by a heavily armed captain, appeared, blocking their way.
"You're not going anywhere!" the captain yelled, raising his energy rifle.
"Out of the way!" Barret roared, but Arthur was already moving.
He didn't use a powerful blast. Instead, he channeled his Authority of Sloth.
The captain's eyes glazed over. He couldn't see them but he could feel them. He was stopped by invisible hands.
"Move!" Arthur urged his team, pulling Aerith forward.
They rushed past the suddenly lethargic Shinra squad, who could barely lift their weapons, let alone give chase. Tifa looked back, a look of utter bewilderment on her face. Barret just shook his head, muttering, "Dragon kid really got some real weird tricks." Cloudia merely watched Arthur, her eyes narrowed in thought.
They burst out of the reactor's access tunnel, into the cool night air of the Midgar slums. In the distance, they could hear the growing sounds of sirens and the frantic shouts of Shinra ground forces.
"Get clear!" Barret yelled. "That bomb's gonna blow!"
They ran, adrenaline pumping, putting as much distance as possible between themselves and the reactor. Just as they reached the edge of Sector 5, a colossal explosion rocked the city. A massive fireball erupted from the Mako Reactor, sending a shockwave that slammed into them, knocking them off their feet.
Arthur used his Dragon's Aura to shield Aerith and Tifa from the blast's worst effects, absorbing the shock. He felt the familiar surge of power as the core of the reactor crumbled, and a brief, joyous tremor from the Planet as a fraction of its stolen Mako was released.
They watched as the top of the reactor collapsed, smoke and debris billowing into the sky. Another victory for the Avalanche. Another step towards changing the fate of this world. Arthur looked at the glowing red sky, then at the faces of his companions.
They were alive. And they would continue to fight.
