Chapter 13 - The Unraveling

The days had taken on a surreal quality for Saad. What had begun as an exhilarating dance between two worlds was now an intricate web of deceit, and he was tangled in it more than he could ever have imagined. Every moment with Alina and Sara, though cherished in their own right, became a reminder of the lie he was living—a lie that was growing more difficult to maintain.

One crisp evening, Saad found himself with Sara at a luxurious restaurant that overlooked the city. The view was breathtaking, the city lights twinkling like a sea of stars beneath them. The atmosphere was perfect; it was a place where secrets could easily be shared, but Saad's heart was heavy. He was there physically, but his mind was elsewhere, haunted by the dual life he was leading.

Sara, always perceptive, noticed the distance in his eyes. She placed her hand gently over his, her touch warm and reassuring. "Saad, you've been different lately. I can feel that something's weighing on you. Please, talk to me."

Saad looked at her, the concern in her eyes making his heart ache. How could he tell her that his distraction wasn't just work, as he'd so often claimed? The truth was a labyrinth he wasn't sure how to navigate. "I'm sorry, Sara. There's just a lot on my mind, and it's not something I can easily talk about."

Sara's brow furrowed slightly, but she didn't press. "You know I'm here for you, right? Whatever it is, you don't have to carry it alone."

Saad's throat tightened as guilt gnawed at him. He wanted to tell her everything, but the fear of losing her, and Alina, was paralyzing. Before he could find the words, his phone buzzed on the table. His heart jumped as he saw the message flash on the screen: "I'm at your place. Can't wait to see you. - Alina."

Panic surged through him. He had completely forgotten about his plans with Alina. His mind raced as he tried to come up with an excuse to leave without raising Sara's suspicions. "Sara, I'm so sorry, but something urgent just came up at work. I need to take care of it immediately."

Sara's disappointment was palpable, but she nodded, forcing a smile. "It's okay, Saad. We can pick this up another time. Just… don't be a stranger."

Saad leaned in, kissed her on the cheek, and quickly made his exit, his mind a whirlwind of thoughts. The guilt was overwhelming, but he couldn't afford to slip up now. He drove to his apartment, his heart pounding in his chest. What would he say to Alina? How would he explain his delay? The lies were becoming harder to keep track of.

When he arrived, Alina greeted him with a warm smile, her arms wrapping around him in a comforting embrace. "I missed you," she said softly, kissing him on the lips.

Saad returned the kiss, but his thoughts were far from affectionate. He was consumed by guilt and fear—guilt for betraying Alina's trust, and fear of the inevitable fallout when everything came to light. As they settled onto the couch to watch a movie, Saad could barely focus. His phone buzzed again, pulling him from his thoughts. This time, it was a message from Sara: "Miss you already. Hope everything's okay."

Alina, who was snuggled up next to him, noticed the message on the screen and glanced up at him, her eyes narrowing in suspicion. "Who's that?"

Saad's blood ran cold. He quickly locked the phone, forcing a smile. "Just a colleague from work. She was asking about a project we're working on."

Alina's expression didn't change. There was doubt in her eyes, a hint of mistrust that hadn't been there before. "You've been getting a lot of messages lately. Is everything really just about work?"

Saad's heart raced as he tried to maintain his composure. "Yeah, it's been hectic lately. But I'm here now, and I just want to relax with you."

Alina didn't push further, but the tension in the room was palpable. Saad knew that the thread he was hanging by was fraying, and it wouldn't take much for everything to unravel.

The next day at work, Saad was on edge. His phone buzzed frequently with messages from both Sara and Alina, each one a reminder of the double life he was leading. He could feel the walls closing in on him, the weight of his lies becoming too much to bear.

During lunch, Saad called Zain, his oldest friend and confidant. "Zain, I need to talk. Can we meet?"

Zain, always reliable, agreed without hesitation. They met at a quiet café, a place they had frequented during their university days. It was a place filled with memories, but today, it was just a backdrop to Saad's turmoil.

Zain studied Saad's face as he sat down, immediately sensing the distress in his friend. "Saad, you look like hell. What's going on?"

Saad sighed deeply, running a hand through his hair. "I'm in a mess, Zain. I've gotten myself into something I don't know how to get out of."

Zain leaned forward, concern etched on his face. "What is it? You know you can tell me anything."

Saad hesitated, then finally let the words tumble out. "I'm in love with two women—Alina and Sara. They have no idea about each other, and I don't know how to choose between them. I can't keep living like this, but I don't want to lose either of them."

Zain's eyes widened in shock, then he shook his head slowly. "Saad, what the hell have you gotten yourself into? You're playing with fire, man. This isn't sustainable. You need to make a choice before everything blows up in your face."

Saad buried his face in his hands, the weight of his predicament pressing down on him. "I know, Zain. But how do I choose? I care about both of them so much. I feel like I'm going to break someone's heart no matter what I do."

Zain sighed, placing a comforting hand on Saad's shoulder. "Look, I get that you're in a tough spot, but you're going to hurt both of them if you keep this up. You have to be honest with yourself and with them. The longer you wait, the worse it's going to be."

Saad knew Zain was right, but the thought of coming clean terrified him. How could he face Alina and Sara after everything? How could he explain the lies, the deceit? He felt trapped, like he was standing at the edge of a cliff with no way out.

As he left the café, his phone buzzed again. This time, it was a message from Alina: "We need to talk. Can you come over tonight?"

Saad's heart sank. The unraveling had begun, and there was no way to stop it. He knew that the confrontation he had been dreading was finally here. The secrets he had been hiding were about to come crashing down, and he wasn't sure he was ready to face the consequences.

That evening, Saad drove to Alina's apartment with a heavy heart. His mind was racing, trying to prepare for what was to come. When he arrived, Alina was waiting for him, her expression serious.

"We need to talk," she said again, leading him inside.

Saad nodded, his throat dry. He knew this was it—the moment of truth. But as he sat down, he couldn't find the words. The silence between them was deafening, each second stretching into an eternity.

Finally, Alina spoke. "Saad, I've been noticing things. You're distant, you're distracted, and you're always on your phone. I need to know… is there someone else?"

Saad's heart pounded in his chest. He opened his mouth to speak, but the words wouldn't come. He could see the hurt in Alina's eyes, and it tore him apart. How could he tell her the truth? How could he explain the mess he had created?

But before he could answer, his phone buzzed again. The sound was like a knife cutting through the tension in the room. Alina glanced at the screen, and her expression hardened. "Is that her?"

Saad's heart dropped. He knew there was no way out now. The time for lies had passed, and all that was left was the painful truth. Taking a deep breath, he finally spoke.

"Alina, I'm so sorry. I never wanted to hurt you, but… yes, there's someone else."

The words hung in the air, and the room seemed to grow colder. Alina's face crumpled, and she looked away, tears welling up in her eyes. "How could you, Saad? After everything we've been through… how could you do this to me?"

Saad reached out to her, but she pulled away, her voice trembling with anger and pain. "Don't touch me. I trusted you, Saad. I loved you. How could you betray me like this?"

Saad felt his heart shatter as he saw the devastation in Alina's eyes. He had hurt the one person who had always been there for him, and he knew that there was no way to fix it. The damage was done, and nothing he could say would make it better.

"I'm sorry, Alina," he whispered, his voice breaking. "I never meant for this to happen. I don't know what to say…"

Alina stood up, wiping away her tears. "Just go, Saad. I can't look at you right now."

Saad nodded, feeling like the ground had been ripped out from under him. He turned and left, the door closing behind him with a finality that echoed in his heart. As he walked to his car, he realized that he had lost everything—Alina, Sara, and any chance of happiness he had once had.

The unraveling was complete, and Saad was left standing in the ruins of his own making, wondering if there was any way to rebuild from the ashes.
